SUICIDAL TENDENCIES IN ADOLESCENTS

Introduction
The relevance of the problem of studying the characteristics of suicidal
behavior in adolescents is caused by the rapid increase in the number of suicides
among the child and adolescent population [1, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 13]. The problem of
studying suicidal behavior in children and adolescents remains at the moment a
controversial issue in theoretical psychiatry and psychology and is one of the
priorities for clinical psychiatrists, suicidologists, and mental health specialists
[2, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 14].
The purpose of the research
is to study the features of clinical
manifestations of suicidal tendencies in adolescents to optimize psycho-
corrective care.
Materials and methods of the research
61 adolescents with behavioral disorders and suicidal intentions of
depressive origin were examined. The structured personality questionnaire
contained a list of psychological test questions to identify risk factors for the
formation of suicidal behavior.
Research results and discussion
One of the main objectives of our research was to study the characteristics
of suicidal tendencies in adolescents, including types of suicidal behavior, its
motives, and ways to implement suicidal intentions. To characterize the types of
suicidal behavior, we used the classification of A.E. Lichko and A.A. Alexandrov
(1974), according to which three types of adolescent suicides are distinguished:
affective, demonstrative, and true. The most frequent type of suicidal behavior in
the adolescents we examined turned out to be demonstrative, observed in 29
(47.5%) patients. In these cases, suicidal behavior was not directed by the desire
to take their own lives but was used as a way to pay attention to their problems,
benefit from the situation, and cause pity, empathy, and compassion. The purpose
of demonstrative suicidal tendencies in some cases was a kind of blackmail, the
possibility of manipulating their parents and others, finding a way out of a difficult
life situation, the desire to avoid punishment or to achieve a response and
reciprocity from persons of the opposite sex. Demonstrative suicidal attempts
were characterized by preparedness, thoughtfulness, and often cruelty towards

parents and loved ones. As a rule, they were performed during the daytime,
at a time when the parents were at home. The method of demonstrating suicide
was carefully chosen. Boys most often inflicted superficial cuts on themselves in
the area of the bends of the hands and forearms, the inner surfaces of the thighs
and shins. When interviewing such teenagers, it turned out that the purpose of
suicidal attempts was blackmail achieving certain benefits and material benefits,
and not settling accounts with life.
Conclusions
Thus, the vast majority (80.3%) of adolescents did not have true intentions
to end their lives, rather demonstrating suicidal behavior or acting impulsively
under the influence of strong emotions, whereas the formation of true suicidal
behavior was observed significantly less frequently (19.7%; p < 0.001). Early
detection of suicidal behavior is a preventive factor to reduce the risk of suicidal
readiness among this population.
