Abstract:
This thesis explores the role of the English language in cognitive
linguistics, with a particular focus on its contributions to critical and logical thinking.
It examines how English facilitates cognitive processes such as reasoning,
argumentation, and problem-solving through its linguistic structures and usage. By
analyzing key concepts in cognitive linguistics and their application to English, the
study aims to understand how the language shapes and enhances cognitive abilities and
influences logical and critical thinking.

Introduction
Cognitive linguistics studies the relationship between language and cognition,
investigating how linguistic structures reflect and influence mental processes. This
thesis focuses on the English language's role in fostering critical and logical thinking.
It explores how the language's syntactic, semantic, and pragmatic features contribute
to reasoning and problem-solving, providing insights into the cognitive functions of
language.

- Cognitive linguistics: Examination of core theories in cognitive
linguistics, including conceptual metaphor theory, frame semantics, and mental
imagery.
- Language and cognition: Analysis of how linguistic structures and usage
affect cognitive processes such as reasoning and argumentation.
2. Linguistic analysis:
- Syntactic structures: Study of how English syntactic structures facilitate logical
reasoning and argumentation.
- Semantic analysis: Exploration of semantic frameworks and how they
support critical thinking through precise and nuanced meaning.
3. Practical application:
- Case studies: Examination of specific examples from English texts,
including academic writing, persuasive essays, and debates, to illustrate the role of
language in critical thinking.
- Experimental research: Analysis of experimental studies that investigate
how language influences cognitive tasks and problem-solving.
Findings
1. Language and cognitive processes:
- Reasoning and argumentation: English syntactic structures, such as
conditional sentences and logical connectives, support complex reasoning and
argument construction.
- Conceptual metaphors: The use of conceptual metaphors in English
provides frameworks for understanding abstract concepts and enhances cognitive
flexibility.
2. Semantic and pragmatic features:
- Precision and nuance: English allows for precise expression of ideas
through its rich vocabulary and semantic distinctions, which aids in critical analysis
and logical reasoning.
- Pragmatic context: The role of context in interpreting meaning and the
use of implicature in English contribute to effective argumentation and critical
thinking.
3. Educational implications:

- Language learning: Understanding the cognitive aspects of English can
enhance language education by focusing on how linguistic features support cognitive
development.
- Critical thinking skills: Integrating cognitive linguistic principles into
education can improve students' ability to reason critically and solve problems.
Discussion
The findings demonstrate that the English language plays a significant role in
cognitive processes related to critical and logical thinking. Its syntactic and semantic
structures facilitate reasoning, argumentation, and problem-solving. The application of
cognitive linguistic theories to English reveals how the language shapes and enhances
cognitive abilities, providing valuable insights for both theoretical and practical
applications.
Conclusion
English, as a cognitive tool, significantly influences critical and logical thinking.
Through its linguistic features, it supports complex cognitive processes and enhances
reasoning abilities. This thesis underscores the importance of understanding the
relationship between language and cognition, highlighting the role of English in
fostering critical thinking skills and providing practical implications for education and
cognitive research.
