The role of the English language in the modern world is invaluable. It is considered
the most commonly used language. More than 450 million people consider him native.
Another 600-650 million citizens use English as an additional language for
communication. It is considered to be in demand in many countries of the world.
Knowledge of the vocabulary and grammar of this language is essential in order to study
abroad. Not to do without it and wishing to find a prestigious and well-paid job.
More recently, it was a foreign language for us, and today it is international. In all
countries of the world, learning English is of great importance. Almost everyone dreams
of learning it at least at an elementary level. Today, children begin to learn this language
at preschool age. English plays an important role in our life. His knowledge is necessary
for people of all ages. English is associated with all spheres of life.It is the language of
navigation, aviation, literature, education, contemporary music, international sports,
tourism, and programming. 75% of the world's correspondence is conducted in English,
60% of radio stations broadcast in English, more than half of the world's periodicals are
published in English, 80% of information is stored in this language.
In many educational institutions, students study English as a compulsory subject in
their academic programs, as it is a subject that contributes to the graduate's further career
in certain fields of activity and business. This article reveals the main problems and
difficulties in mastering the necessary competencies when learning English, which most
of the students face. The main objective is to consider ways and methods to improve
language acquisition and overcome emerging problems in learning English, which are
simple and effective in implementation and application in practice in the learning process.
English seems simple and complex at the same time, as it contains a huge number
of exceptions to numerous rules. This tends to make learning and understanding difficult
for those who wish to become fluent in English as a second language. Thus, learning
foreign languages requires a lot of time, constant work on the language and dedication.
The main problems faced by learners of English are:
1.
Spelling.
English has a lot of words that have no common meaning, are not related to each
other in any way, are spelled differently, are different parts of speech, but are heard in the
same way when pronounced. Such words are called homophones - language learners
often make mistakes when using such words. For example: cell-sell, hair-hare (hare hair),
by buy (using to buy), fair fare, hear here (hear here). To avoid misunderstanding and
confusion, it is very important to teach students to pay attention to the context, and not to
translate in separate words and sentences. It is important to understand the difference in
spelling between these words in order to become an effective written communicator.
2.
Pronunciation
English is not a phonetic language, and words are often spelled differently from
how they are pronounced. And words that are spelled the same can be pronounced quite
differently. For example: the verb read (read) read the present tense = me, its past tense
form read (ed) - read. Enough (and naf) is enough, through (fru) through, through.
Learning the pronunciation and spelling of these words is essential to understanding both
written and spoken language and requires great effort and patience from students.
3.
Poor vocabulary. Vocabulary is very important when learning a language. It is
believed that it is enough to know only 800 words to speak English fluently. Also, when
people learn new words, they often forget them after a certain period of time. In this case,
in order to improve and not forget your English vocabulary, you can practice the
following tricks.
- use the list method, which is very simple and efficient. Once a week, make a list of
twenty-five new words that you want to remember (write down new interesting words
that you think you will use and will be useful to you in your language practice). When
compiling such a list, it is better to write down their definitions and, if possible, the
phrase in which this word was used. Such contextual study of expressions and words
contributes to better memorization and expansion of your vocabulary. Repeat and study
these words and expressions at any free time. Next, break the list into five words a day.
On the first day, learn the first five words. On the second day - the next five words. After
the second day, when you have memorized the five words of that day, try to remember
and write down the black words. On the third day, learn and write down the words of the
third day, and then remember the words of the second and first days, and so on. When
learning words, it is important not only to learn them orally, but also to write them down
in writing, which will help you develop your writing skills. On the seventh day, having
studied the word of that day, remember and write down all the previous ones, make
predictions with them. Take your time and be confident in your abilities. Using this
method, it is very easy to memorize words, it is important with the systematic nature of
such practice in order not to forget and enrich your vocals.
4.
Insufficient conversational 20 language skills, language barrier
One of the biggest problems in learning English is the inability to communicate freely,
fear and the language barrier. Regardless of how good or bad the students are in the
language aspects, the issue of language barriers and the inability to speak fluently in
English can confuse them. Let's look at some ways to improve your speaking and English
skills.
-
Watching films in English, or rather familiar films previously viewed in your native
language, is one of the easiest ways to use while learning English. This is a very effective
way, as it allows you to hear and listen to words and speech spoken aloud: Repeating
phrases heard aloud also removes fear and barriers in language learning;
-
Reading books in English aloud also has an excellent effect on learning, which,
according to students, leads to improved speaking skills and removal of the barrier. At
first, the book should be simple, correspond to your level of proficiency in grammar and
vocabulary, it can be even simpler, by reading aloud you are no longer afraid to speak
English. Reading aloud makes you hear your English, which helps you gain confidence in
the spoken aspect of the language. It is better to use this method regularly, preferably
daily, perhaps at least ten minutes a day. This is an important practical way to succeed.
Read slowly, try to pronounce the words correctly, look up the correct pronunciation in
the dictionary if you are not sure. By reading aloud you practice speaking English.
5.
The fifth obstacle to learning a foreign language is shyness. Students who are just
starting to learn a foreign language will be afraid:
“
I won
’
t be able to speak this language
correctly, I won
’
t be able to learn this language.
”
For this reason, students develop
insecurity and shyness. For example, there may be some shy students who, despite doing
their homework, do not feel comfortable talking to their classmates. This is one of the
main obstacles for students to become fluent in English.
6.
Lack of time. One of the main barriers to learning English is lack of time. No matter
how well organized and effective the lesson is, if the student does not put what he has
learned into practice, he will quickly forget what he learned during the lesson. Therefore,
it is good to have enough time for the student to develop his/her English language skills.
In conclusion, we would like to note that there are many obstacles in teaching a
foreign language, from technical problems to stimulating the student. Our research has
shown that motivation is necessary to overcome most of the difficulties in learning a
foreign language. In addition, the use of ICT in teaching foreign languages plays an
important role. Shyness of the student, lack of time, textbooks with difficult tasks, etc. - it
was found that such problems have a negative impact on the level of mastering the
English language of the student. In addressing these issues, it has been found that barriers
are removed only when language teaching methods gain student interest, using effective
new technologies in language teaching. The results of this study will be of great help to
English teachers in all secondary schools. In addition, using the proposed barriers to
teaching English in this study will help students achieve better English language
proficiency in the future.
In general, in order to overcome the obstacles that students face in teaching them English,
the teacher must constantly improve their professional skills. Moreover, as we have seen
in the course of our research, it is the teacher who must overcome the negative habits
inherent in any student when learning a language.
Today, as we have already mentioned, we have highlighted some of the elements of
removing the barriers that we face in teaching a foreign language. However, this research
will continue into the future, completely removing barriers to teaching English and
demonstrating effective work. This is due to the fact that the barriers to learning English
are one of the most pressing problems in the direction of the qualitative study of this
language.
