The Charm of Small Streets in Big Cities
Tourist streets are those city corners that often become the focus of travelers’
attention. Hidden away from noisy main roads, these small streets and alleys possess
a special charm and atmosphere that make you stop and enjoy the moment. They can
be rich in history, culture, and architectural features, turning them into true gems for
tourists.
Uzbekistan, endowed with a rich historical and cultural heritage, offers tourists
unique routes that facilitate a profound immersion into the traditions and lifestyle of
the Uzbek people. As part of efforts to preserve and transmit cultural values, a street
in the historic Gulbozor mahalla of Tashkent was reconstructed and transformed into
a tourist space of considerable cultural and historical significance.

This street is located in close proximity to the central Chorsu Bazaar and the
Kukeldash Madrasah, built in 1570, enhancing its appeal to tourists and providing a
comprehensive introduction to the region’s historical context. During the restoration
process, entrance gates were rebuilt in the traditional medieval architectural style,
alongside a 50-meter-long iwan adorned with carved columns, offering panoramic
views of the Khoja Akhrar Vali Mosque.
Particular attention was given to the landscaping of the street: flowers, fruit, and
ornamental trees were planted along its entire length, and a water feature was
installed to create a favorable microclimate during hot seasons. The architectural
appearance of the street preserves the authentic features of an Uzbek mahalla —
narrow alleys, compact residential buildings, and carved wooden doors — while
simultaneously acquiring a modern functional role as a center for cultural and craft
workshops.
Along the street, artisan workshops operate where visitors can observe
traditional craftsmanship techniques and purchase handmade products. Additionally,
bakeries and restaurants specializing in national cuisine contribute to an atmosphere
of Eastern hospitality, enriched by the aromas of freshly baked bread and spices.
To deepen tourists’ understanding of Uzbek cultural heritage, exhibitions such
as “The History of Bread” and “Journey to Ancient Tashkent” are organized within
the street’s territory. Thus, the reconstructed space not only supports the preservation
of tangible and intangible culture but also fosters new forms of its presentation and
reception by contemporary tourists. .(

Tourist streets often stand out for their intimacy and uniqueness. Unlike large
avenues, they feel cozier and more personal. There are no noisy cars here, and the
main emphasis is on walking and enjoying the ambiance. These streets may be paved
with cobblestones, surrounded by old buildings, and lit by street lamps, creating an
unforgettable old-world atmosphere.
One of the main characteristics of such streets is their connection to the city’s
history. Many of them have preserved their appearance unchanged for centuries,

offering travelers a unique sense of time and place. Walking along these streets, you
can feel like a part of past eras, when life was calmer and more measured.
Architectural Value
Tourist streets are often open-air museums, where every house, window, and
door has its own story. In European cities like Prague, Rome, or Paris, you can find
streets where historical architecture intertwines closely with modern elements. This
allows you not only to admire beautiful facades but also to learn more about the
building traditions of different eras.
In some cases, these streets have become genuine cultural centers, home to art
galleries, artisan workshops, cafes, and shops selling locally made goods. Here you
can find unique souvenirs to decorate your home or give to friends, as well as try
local cuisine while enjoying the atmosphere of old streets.
