Annotation.
This article extensively examines the concept of tolerance and the
relevance of fostering it in the modern world. Since tolerance encompasses aspects
ranging from human health to ethics and legality, which directly influence societal
life and development, its cultivation is crucial for the advancement of society as a
whole.
Keywords:
tolerance, acceptance, development, traditions, individual,
interpersonal relationships, communication culture, religion.
Independent Uzbekistan is recognized globally as a country that vividly
demonstrates qualities such as tolerance and acceptance, kindness and generosity,
hospitality and compassion. Representatives of more than 130 ethnic groups living in
Uzbekistan in peace and harmony have the opportunity to receive education in their
native languages, develop themselves and preserve their traditions. Broadcasts and
programs are aired in several fraternal languages and newspapers and magazines are
published in more than six languages, providing practical examples of the deeply
rooted atmosphere of interethnic harmony, friendship and tolerance in our homeland.
The concept of tolerance is essential for the culture of communication and
interpersonal relationships in today’s rapidly developing technological era. Each
individual perceives and interprets tolerance differently based on their worldview.
What is tolerance? When and under what circumstances did tolerance enter
global culture? According to sources:
• In Spanish, the term tolerancia translates as “recognition of the best ideas and
thoughts”.
• In English literature, it is interpreted as “tolerance, patience, and endurance.”
• In Chinese source (Kuàn róng -
寛容
),
it means “to be tolerant and kind to
others.”
• In Arabic ( حماست - tasamuh), it is defined as “forgiveness, gentleness,
compassion and patience.”
When these definitions are synthesized, tolerance, derived from the Latin
tolerantia, can be understood as a positive attitude aimed at recognizing, accepting,
understanding and respecting the existence of diversity in society. It involves
acknowledging and appreciating different opinions and treating others with
understanding, considering their feelings, worldviews, thoughts and behaviors.
Tolerance is an expansive concept, encompassing aspects ranging from human
health to ethics and legality, directly influencing societal life. According to Peter.
Medawar, who introduced this term into scientific use in 1953, tolerance is the
weakening or loss of the immune response of a healthy organism against foreign
tissues or antigens.
From a sociological perspective, tolerance is: acceptance of the lifestyles,
behaviors, customs and feelings of others resilience to unfavorable emotional factors

(«Социологический энциклопедический словарь», Мoscow, 1998, pp. 370-6) In
Russian sociological encyclopedias, the term is defined similarly.
A person possessing spiritual and moral values and qualities can be called
tolerant, as they recognize that every individual is unique, with their individuality and
irreplaceability in any situation. Such a person is capable of finding the right
approach to any challenge. The cultural and spiritual development of society depends
on how tolerant each of us is.
In Uzbekistan, where the population comprises multiple nationalities and
religions, tolerance is a crucial factor for peaceful and harmonious coexistence. It
entails the proper understanding and respect for diverse perspectives, cultures, social
groups, forms of self-expression and individuality. Tolerance affirms the right of
individuals to live according to their worldview, granting everyone the right to adhere
to their beliefs while recognizing the same rights for others.
In Uzbekistan, it is emphasized on creating a legal foundation to strengthen
mutual respect, equality, unity and cohesion among representatives of various
nationalities living in the country. For example, Article 4 of the Constitution of the
Republic of Uzbekistan guarantees respect for the languages, customs and traditions
of nations and ethnic groups residing in Uzbekistan territory and creates conditions
for their development.
In 1997, the United Nations General Assembly declared November 16 as
International Day for Tolerance. This date has also become a well-established
tradition in Uzbekistan.
In the Uzbek language, tolerance is understood as a quality inherent in our
people – compassionate, kind, sincere, caring and forgiving. In its broadest sense,
tolerance embodies the highest human behavioral principles, helping people live in
harmony, instilling confidence in life and in the fulfillment of their dreams, and
overcoming life’s trials and challenges. It awakens a sense of strength and
determination in individuals, fostering the preservation and enrichment of universal,
religious and national values. These values should also serve to be passed down
through generations based on the principle of continuity.
To achieve this, it is necessary to cultivate creative qualities and a passion for
innovation and creativity, especially among the younger generation. In this case,
individuals with restless hearts and minds, virtuous consciousness and a sense of
happiness begin to lead the nation, inspiring its spirit and enhancing its strength. The
maturity of a citizen of our country reflects the maturity, freedom, and moral strength
of the nation.
Tolerance requires each individual to be aware of their identity, understand their
rights, remain independent of surrounding events, harmonize personal interests with
those of the nation and the world, and build relationships based on justice,
compassion and grace. Experience shows that the more educated and cultured an
individual is, the more tolerant they become toward others and the world around
them.
