One of our writers who has made a great contribution to the development of Uzbek prose

is Ulugbek Hamdam. The writer has been demonstrating the tradition of truthfully interpreting
the human psyche, its inherent character traits. As literature interprets the diverse world, the
spiritual and moral image of a person, at its core the fate, destiny, and life of the individual find
their expression in an integral unity. This, in turn, reveals the world of heroes in any work of
art, their spiritual image. The integrity of these features also reveals the world of images, its
uniqueness.

The role of the talented poet and prose writer Ulugbek Hamdam in the development of

Uzbek literature is incomparable. A number of poetry collections of the writer, prose works
such as "Balance", "Rebellion and Obedience", "Sabo and Samandar", "Namatak", "Ota", "Yo'l",
"Tort ko'cha" and a number of prose works were very well received by the wide readership.

The writer's work is rich in innovation and renewal. This is also especially recognized by

literary scholars and critics. In his novels, changes in the renewal of the era, unique aspects in
reflecting the image and biography of heroes, and spiritual interpretations have found their
artistic reflection. The creative process, like life, is so endless, unique and multifaceted that it
reflects the tradition of artistic reflection of reality in accordance with the needs and talents of
each writer.

It is not for nothing that literary fiction, which is a product of creativity, is also recognized

as a rain that is constantly polished by the masses of thought and feelings of the heart, never
stopping, and is increasingly radiant and sparkling. After all, literary fiction, as a form of social
consciousness, is subject to the laws of historical development. Changes in society also bring
about changes and new forms of expression in literary fiction.

As the literary critic, Hero of Uzbekistan Ozod Sharafiddinov noted: “Literature should

penetrate human feelings, pain, and life path. Why does a person live the way he does? What is
the meaning of human life, what are his characteristics as a person, what are his unique aspects
- these must be fully reflected in the work... The most important aspect that we need to achieve
in today's literature and artistic thinking is to reach new aspects of our relationship to reality
and the world, to move to a new, deeper, higher perception of the world. Therefore, we must
try to reveal the essence of the world, society, and man more broadly” [1, p.247].

Indeed, as has been rightly noted, it is necessary to emphasize that literature is not for

socialization, but should interpret the joys and sorrows of human soul experiences, which
should serve to reveal his spiritual and moral world. In this regard, the views expressed in the
novels of the talented writer Ulugbek Hamdam, aimed at understanding not only a person, but
his entire being, even the reason for his existence, are distinguished by their artistic expression.

It is difficult to see the time while standing in the present, and it is even more difficult to

evaluate any of its aspects. Therefore, it is extremely responsible to talk about the literature of
the independence period and its characteristic features. Because the era and the person, the
individual and society, the world and the person are always doomed to live in harmony, in

dialectical unity. This makes it possible to understand the person from the perspective of the
world and the person.

As the literary critic H. Karimov noted: “...the novel “Balance” is a very timely work. In fact,

on the eve of independence, people lost both their external and internal balance and became
quite demoralized, and the novel reveals the essence of this” [2, p.279].

As noted, in the works of the writer in various genres, the desire to understand man, the

expressions aimed at interpreting his aesthetic image, are elevated to the primary level. The
writer’s novel “The Road”, considered in this respect, is also distinguished by its artistic
expression of a number of philosophical views, such as life and man, death and man. This novel
by the creator is also, at the same time, inextricably linked with human life and reveals such
considerations as life, living, struggle, understanding.

In the writer's novels, the spiritual image of the hero is revealed on the basis of

understanding and interpreting his psyche: "A voice came! A voice-o-oz! .. Can you hear it, a
voice came from nowhere! Not filling the worlds, no, but a voice as long as a road, as mysterious
and magical as a road. Not a shouting voice, but a whispering voice! But that's how I heard it"
[3, p. 10].

The hero of the work is not in vain happy to hear a certain voice, it is possible to

understand that he feels that his life, the path of life is embodied in this voice. The road is
figuratively, the road is manifested in dialectical unity with human life, life. The image of the
road performs a specific function in artistic space and time. Therefore, the name "Road" also
means that the human character and his spiritual world are reflected in harmony with each
other.

As the writer and literary critic Khurshid Dostmuhammad noted: “In the stories written

by Ulugbek, it is not enough to learn anything from the outside; on the contrary, no matter what
the story is about, the main goal for the author always remains the essence, the true essence…
However, the method chosen by the writer is complex, and effective penmanship in this
complex artistic field is even more complex” [4, p.237].

Indeed, as noted, the unique essence of the writer's works in all genres, the forms of

expression that shake the reader's heart, symbols, colorfulness, emotional expressions, all this
allows us to understand the essence of the work. In turn, in the novel "The Road", the reader
observes the image of a person striving to understand life and identity. Based on these concepts,
he tries to understand the fate of man, his spiritual world, the causes of the conflicts that arise
in his experiences.

“After time passed and I dreamed again and again, I began to understand that what I saw

was a dream. The first time I understood my dream as a continuation of my life. Perhaps
someday I will be inclined to think so again, but now I consider it a dream, a shadow of my real
life. Because the reality that I saw in my dream was not much like the one in my mind. So, I was
flying far and wide” [3, p.11]. It can be observed that the fate of a person who seeks to
understand life and man, to search for the essence of life, finds its artistic expression in the
experiences that the fictional hero experiences in his imagination.

As we look at the development of events in the novel, the reality at its core allows us to

understand the world and man, that is, to feel our own identity. We feel more deeply that the
Road, based on the artistic element, provides a wide opportunity to understand and interpret
the suffering and feelings of the human soul. It should be noted that each artistic element has

its own unique meanings. Because artistic elements, together with the expression of meaning,
are the basis for revealing the spiritual world of a person.

As the literary critic A. Nasirov noted: “It is known that circumstances are one of the main

factors in the formation of human character. Characters in fiction are no exception” [5, p.13]. As
noted, the novel “The Road” also contains its own principles of interpretation of the
environment, circumstances, people, thinking, and spirituality, which in turn provides a wider
opportunity to understand the world and people [6, p.48].

In Ulugbek Hamdam’s novel “The Road,” the human psyche, its contradictory image, and

its complex fate are reflected in very beautiful artistic expressions. One of the psychological
tools used was dream interpretation, which served as the basis for revealing the principles of
understanding that are unique to the individual [7, p.84]. At the heart of these characteristics is
the manifestation of human destiny, its harmony with the eternal decree, which encourages the
reader to think.
