INTRODUCTION
Elementary school is a crucial phase in a child’s educational journey, where the
foundation for a lifetime of learning is laid. While teachers and schools play a significant role,
parents are equally important in ensuring a child’s academic success and personal
development. In this blog, we will explore the pivotal role parents play in elementary
education, with a focus on establishing a strong home-school partnership, creating a
supportive learning environment at home, nurturing a positive attitude toward learning,
effective communication with teachers, and advocating for a child’s educational needs. The
relationship between parents and teachers is vital in creating a successful learning
environment. Here are some key ways parents can strengthen this partnership: Parents
should regularly attend parent-teacher conferences to discuss their child’s progress,
challenges, and goals. This open dialogue helps them stay informed and involved. Besides
attending conferences, emailing, and calling teachers when there are questions or concerns is
also very important. Often a child’s perception of a story or conversation can be different than
that of a teacher. Participate in school events, volunteer opportunities, and PTA meetings [1].
Going to classroom parties for holidays is also a great way to get involved. Being an active
member of the school community demonstrates your commitment to their child’s education.
Educators and parents play major roles in the educational success of students. Students need
a positive learning experience to succeed in school: one providing support, motivation, and
68
quality instruction. With the increasing demands on the family, parental support in the
education of students extends beyond the school building. Many families are faced with
overwhelming and unpredictable schedules and circumstances while juggling school, sports,
family situations, family time, work schedules, and other responsibilities, allowing minimal
time to provide support in any one given area. Although it seems that parental involvement is
researched the topic of many domestic and foreign studies, there is still concern regarding
parental involvement and what constitutes effective parental involvement in the education of
students. Educators, parents, and community members may have different opinions regarding
effective involvement practices and the ways each can contribute to the educational process.
METHODS
Parents serve as the first educators in a child's life, and their involvement in education
extends their support into the classroom. By staying informed about their child's curriculum,
assignments, and progress, parents can provide valuable academic assistance at home. They
can assist with homework, engage in discussions about school topics, and reinforce learning
objectives. This active participation helps students consolidate their understanding, reinforce
key concepts, and bridge any gaps in learning.
Emotional and Motivational Support:
Parental involvement goes beyond academics; it also plays a crucial role in nurturing
students' emotional well-being and motivation. When parents take an active interest in their
child's education, it sends a powerful message that learning is important and valued (Hill &
Tyson, 2009). Regular communication with teachers and participation in parent-teacher
conferences demonstrate a commitment to a child's educational journey. This support helps
students develop a positive attitude toward learning, boosts their self-confidence, and
encourages them to persevere through challenges.
Parents who are actively involved in their child's education often have a better
understanding of their routines, schedules, and responsibilities. They can help establish a
structured environment at home, reinforce discipline, and encourage students to take
ownership of their learning. By setting expectations, providing guidance, and monitoring
progress, parents can instill valuable life skills such as time management, organization, and
accountability. Bridging the Home-School Gap: Effective parent involvement serves as a
bridge between the home and school environments, promoting a cohesive learning experience
for students. When parents and teachers work together, they can align their efforts to support
a child's academic and social development. Regular communication allows for sharing of
information, insights, and concerns, fostering a collaborative approach that addresses
individual needs more effectively. This partnership creates a nurturing educational ecosystem
where students can thrive. Increased Academic Achievement: Research consistently
demonstrates that students with involved parents tend to achieve higher academic success
[2].
RESULTS
Education is a collaborative endeavor that extends beyond the boundaries of the
classroom. While teachers play a pivotal role in shaping students' minds, the involvement of
parents in the learning process is equally vital. Parental involvement has been recognized as a
key factor in enhancing academic achievement, fostering positive attitudes toward learning,
and promoting overall student success. This article explores the importance of parent
69
involvement and highlights its various benefits for students. Academic Support: Parents serve
as the first educators in a child's life, and their involvement in education extends their support
into the classroom. By staying informed about their child's curriculum, assignments, and
progress, parents can provide valuable academic assistance at home. They can assist with
homework, engage in discussions about school topics, and reinforce learning objectives [3].
Parents should not only help the child with materials, such as books and learning tools, but
should also help with their cognitive development. Parents can help their children develop
intellectually through their daily interactions by providing intellectual challenges,
encouraging discussion, or promoting critical thinking. In addition, parental involvement also
has a very important emotional aspect. Children who get emotional support from their
parents and their positive presence can build a strong bond between them and their parents,
provide a sense of security, and increase their intrinsic desire to learn (Mahmudin & Muhid,
2020). Children who receive emotional support tend to have higher self-confidence, see
learning as fun, and are better at overcoming learning barriers and difficulties. Parental
involvement is also important for children's social development. Children learn to
communicate, cooperate and form healthy social relationships with their parents. Parents
who have good social role models help children understand the importance of working
together to achieve common goals. A child's personal development is not limited to the impact
of parental involvement; it also has a direct impact on the child's learning outcomes. Children
who feel positive support and involvement from their parents tend to do better academically.
Intrinsic motivation instilled by parents can be a key driver for children to study with
enthusiasm, dive into learning materials, and actively overcome learning barriers (Hutapea,
2023) [4]. Therefore, understanding the importance of parental involvement in children's
education builds a solid foundation for understanding the complex dynamics between the
family environment and children's learning achievement. By implementing educational
mindsets and practices that engage parents, education systems can provide more thorough
and effective support to ensure optimal learning for every child.
DISCUSSION
When parents take an active interest in their child's education, they are more likely to
monitor progress, provide necessary resources, and engage in activities that promote
learning. This involvement has a positive impact on attendance, grades, and standardized test
scores. Students with supportive parents also tend to have better study habits, increased
motivation, and a greater likelihood of pursuing higher education. Parental involvement goes
beyond academics; it also plays a crucial role in nurturing students' emotional well-being and
motivation. When parents take an active interest in their child's education, it sends a powerful
message that learning is important and valued. Regular communication with teachers and
participation in parent-teacher conferences demonstrate a commitment to a child's
educational journey. This support helps students develop a positive attitude toward learning,
boosts their self-confidence, and encourages them to persevere through challenges.
CONCLUSION
In conclusion, parental involvement is a cornerstone of a well-rounded education. By
actively participating in their child's learning process, parents contribute to their academic
success, emotional well-being, and overall development. The partnership between parents
and educators creates a supportive environment that fosters a love for learning, strengthens
70
educational foundations, and empowers students to reach their full potential. Recognizing the
pivotal role of parents in education is crucial for building a collaborative and inclusive
educational system that prepares students for a bright future. It is very important to pay
attention to the ethical aspects of research as it engages participants in the research process
with honesty and responsibility. The study as a whole aims to provide useful information that
can enhance our understanding of the role of parents in secondary education. In conclusion,
parental involvement is more than just supporting students in academic tasks; it also helps
create a good learning environment for students. These factors underline the importance of
parents' role as key supporters in helping students achieve outstanding development in
secondary school.
