PSYCHOLOGICAL IMPACT OF MARRIAGE MOTIVATIONS ON THE STABILITY
OF FAMILY RELATIONSHIPS AMONG YOUTH: SOCIAL-PSYCHOLOGICAL
CHARACTERISTICS
Anarbayeva Feruza Shermatovna
Abstract:
The role of marriage motivations in the stability of family relationships has been
increasingly discussed in contemporary psychological research, especially concerning youth. The
psychological factors influencing young people's motivations for marriage are crucial for
understanding how these motivations shape the dynamics of family life. This article explores the
social-psychological characteristics of marriage motivations among youth and how these factors
impact the strength and longevity of marital bonds. Through examining various motivations for
marriage—emotional, social, and economic—this article highlights the psychological processes
that affect the stability of family relationships, as well as the social and cultural context within
which young people form these motivations.

Introduction
Marriage is a significant life event that plays a key role in shaping an individual’s
psychological and social development. The reasons behind why individuals choose to marry are
multifaceted, influenced by cultural norms, emotional needs, social expectations, and personal
values. For youth, the motivations behind marriage can have a lasting impact on the success and
stability of their marital relationships. Understanding the psychological dynamics of marriage
motivations among young people is crucial, as it allows for a deeper exploration of how these
motivations affect family life. This article aims to investigate the psychological influence of
marriage motivations on family stability, focusing on the social-psychological characteristics of
youth.
Literature Review
The relationship between motivations for marriage and the stability of family life has been
extensively studied in psychology. According to various studies, marriage motivations can be
categorized into emotional, social, and economic factors. For instance, emotional motivations
stem from a desire for companionship, love, and personal fulfillment, while social motivations
may arise from societal pressures and family expectations. Economic motivations are often
driven by practical considerations such as financial stability and the pursuit of a secure future.
Emotional Motivations: Emotional intimacy and the desire for deep, lasting connections are
frequently cited as primary motivations for marriage among youth (e.g., Abulhanova, 2009).
Psychological theories suggest that emotional needs—such as affection, companionship, and
belonging—can strongly influence one’s decision to marry. These motivations can lead to
greater marital satisfaction when both partners’ emotional needs are met.

Social Motivations: Social expectations, often rooted in cultural norms, family traditions, and
peer pressure, also play a significant role in marriage decisions. Young people, particularly in
traditional societies, may feel the need to marry due to societal pressures, which may influence
the stability of their marital relationships (Alekseeva, 2011). In contrast, youth in more
individualistic cultures may prioritize personal fulfillment over social conformity when making
marriage decisions.
Economic Motivations: The pursuit of financial stability and the desire for a secure family life
are common motivations among youth today. In many cases, economic factors such as job
security, housing, and material wealth can shape young people’s decisions to marry (Aganbekov,
2004). Economic pressures can either strengthen a relationship when partners are aligned in their
goals or contribute to marital instability if there are disagreements regarding financial priorities.
Discussion
The psychological impact of marriage motivations on family stability is highly influenced by
the combination of emotional, social, and economic factors. These motivations can have both
positive and negative effects on marital relationships, depending on how well they align with
each partner’s values and expectations.
Positive Impact of Emotional Motivations: When young people enter marriage with the
motivation to cultivate love, affection, and mutual understanding, the relationship is often
characterized by greater emotional fulfillment and support. Emotional connection strengthens
marital bonds, promoting stability and longevity. Moreover, emotionally motivated marriages
tend to experience higher levels of satisfaction, as both partners feel valued and connected.
Negative Impact of Social Motivations: On the other hand, marriages driven primarily by social
expectations and external pressures may face challenges. When individuals marry to conform to
societal norms or to fulfill family obligations, they may experience a lack of genuine emotional
fulfillment. This dissonance between societal expectations and personal desires can lead to
dissatisfaction, communication breakdowns, and increased stress within the relationship, which
can threaten the stability of the marriage.
Economic Pressures and Family Stability: Economic factors also have a profound impact on
marriage stability. For young couples, financial stress can strain marital relations, especially if
there is disagreement over spending, saving, or career priorities. However, when economic goals
are aligned and both partners share similar financial values, it can enhance family stability.
Financial challenges are more easily overcome when both partners work collaboratively to
manage resources and support each other’s career ambitions.
Conclusion
The motivations for marriage among youth are diverse and multifaceted, deeply influencing
the stability and success of family relationships. Emotional motivations tend to contribute
positively to marital satisfaction and family stability, while social motivations may lead to
dissatisfaction if they do not align with individual desires. Economic motivations play a

significant role, with financial stability being a key factor in relationship dynamics. In order to
foster stronger, more stable families, it is essential to understand and address the psychological
factors that shape marriage motivations among youth. Providing psychological support and
guidance for young couples can enhance their ability to navigate the challenges of marriage and
create stable, fulfilling family lives.
