The Fergana Valley is one of the ancient, cultural and religious centers of
Uzbekistan, home to hundreds of sacred sites. These places are of particular
importance not only from the point of view of religious beliefs, but also in terms of
tourism potential. Through pilgrimage tourism, the Fergana Valley is becoming an
interesting and historical destination not only for local tourists, but also for foreign
guests.
Today, pilgrimage tourism is developing in Uzbekistan, along with all areas of
tourism. Through this type of tourism, citizens have the opportunity to travel to
religious and historical sites and learn spiritual lessons from them. At the same time,
pilgrimage tourism plays an important role in economic, social and cultural terms.
However, there are some problems in the development of the sector. At the same
time, there are also great opportunities in this area. Pilgrimage tourism has become an
emerging sector as one of the priority areas of tourism in Uzbekistan. Especially after
independence, religious values were restored, historical monuments were restored,
and pilgrimage tourism became popular. This sector occupies an important place not
only economically, but also socially and spiritually.

In recent years, a favorable legal and institutional environment for pilgrimage
tourism has been created through regulatory and legal documents adopted at the state
level, presidential decrees, and government resolutions. Especially in regions rich in
religious and cultural heritage, such as the Fergana Valley, clear development in this
direction is observed.
Pilgrimage tourism means traveling to places of religious, historical, or spiritual
significance. This type of tourism allows people to spiritually purify themselves,
communicate with their inner world, and understand religious and cultural values.
The Fergana Valley is one of the most ancient and densely populated regions of
Uzbekistan, rich in many holy places, tombs of famous scholars, and historical
monuments. This region has great potential not only for historical and cultural, but
also for religious pilgrimage tourism. Today, the growing interest in national and
religious values in society, as well as the development of tourism as one of the
priority areas in state policy, creates the basis for the development of pilgrimage
tourism to a new level.
The historical roots of pilgrimage tourism in the Fergana Valley, their role in
religious and cultural life, and the factors of development of this sector in modern
conditions are studied. The work uses an analytical approach based on historical
sources, regulatory and legal documents, statistical data and modern scientific
research. The Fergana Valley is one of the most ancient centers of civilization in
Uzbekistan and is considered an important center of Islamic culture and history.
There are hundreds of holy places, historical mosques, and mausoleums of religious
scholars here. Shrines such as the Shahriston Khoja Mausoleum (Andijan), the Khoja
Amin Mausoleum (Namangan), the Khanqah Mosque (Kokand), the Pirsiddiq Baba
Shrine (Fergana), and the Norbutabiy Mosque (Kokand) are of great importance in
terms of religious belief, historical memory, and tourist interest, and are among the
destinations visited by local and foreign tourists.
Tourism in Uzbekistan, including pilgrimage tourism, is regulated by the
following legal framework. The Law “On Tourism” (as amended - November 18,
2019) defines the development of the tourism sector, the rights of tourists, the
provision of tourist services, and state control. The Law recognizes pilgrimage
tourism as a separate type. Decree of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan “On
Measures for the Accelerated Development of Pilgrimage Tourism in the Republic”
No. PF-5460. July 5, 2018. This decree sets out a comprehensive set of measures to
develop the necessary infrastructure for pilgrimage tourism, restore historical and
religious monuments, and increase the flow of foreign tourists. After gaining
independence in 1991, Uzbekistan paid increased attention to religious values,
historical monuments, and cultural heritage sites. Religious freedoms were expanded
in the country, and many mausoleums, mosques, and shrines were renovated.

The Fergana Valley has long been one of the important centers of Islamic
culture. Great scholars such as Burkhaniddin Marginoni and Shamsiddin Kulol lived
here. Many mausoleums, mosques, and shrines located in the region are still visited
by believers and tourists today. During the years of independence, religious freedoms
were expanded in Uzbekistan, historical and religious monuments were renovated,
and decisions were made to develop pilgrimage tourism.
The Fergana Valley has a huge historical, cultural, and religious potential for
pilgrimage tourism. One of the important tasks is to scientifically study the ancient
pilgrimage sites in the region, preserve them, and integrate them with modern tourism
infrastructure. As it was found in the course of this work, pilgrimage tourism can
bring not only economic, but also spiritual and educational benefits. This contributes
to the spiritual awakening of society.
Pilgrimage tourism is a tourism direction that promotes national values, brings
economic and spiritual benefits. Its development is directly related to reliable legal
foundations. On this basis, the Fergana Valley can be formed as an advanced region
of pilgrimage tourism in Uzbekistan.
The Fergana Valley, with its sacred sites, is recognized not only as a center of
religious values, but also as a region with high tourist potential. Pilgrimage tourism
can be further developed through the preservation, restoration of these sites, the
development of routes and improving the quality of services. This is not only an
economic benefit, but also a means of introducing the cultural and spiritual wealth of
our people to the world.
Pilgrimage tourism is one of the important and promising directions of
Uzbekistan. This sector not only brings economic benefits, but also promotes national
values, preserves and preserves spiritual heritage. In the development of the sector, it
is important to eliminate existing problems, but also to properly use existing
opportunities. Developing pilgrimage tourism is an effective way to show respect for
the historical and religious values of our people and to spiritually educate the younger
generation.
