Introduction.
It is difficult to assess the role of the English language in the modern world. About
500 million citizens speak English from birth, and another 700 million learn this
language and use it for communication. When studying it, many face difficulties in the
absence of the possibility of traveling abroad and language practice. Also, the lexical and
grammatical material that is presented in book editions may not always be enough.
However, learning foreign languages can be easily done by watching movies and series in
English. In addition, what is presented in book editions is often outdated and out of date.
Thus, watching films and series in English provides an opportunity to get acquainted
with modern colloquial variants.
The purpose of the work is to determine the possibility of films and series to act as
aids for improving the knowledge of the English language and the selection of films and
series suitable for this purpose. The object of the research is films and series in English,
while the subject of the research is the practical use of films and series in learning
English.
Materials and methods.
In the course of work on this topic, a sociological survey was conducted, which
helped to identify the relevance of this language learning method. In order to determine
the attitude of a modern person to this method of learning English, a study was
conducted in which 100 students aged 14 to 17 took part. The purpose of this survey was
to obtain information on the relevance of such a method of learning English as watching
movies and TV shows in the original.
An objective point of view on the problem identified by the work was reflected in
the answers to the following questions: how the respondents can characterize their level
of English proficiency; whether the respondents wish to improve their knowledge of the
English language; whether the survey participant watches films in English; what is the
purpose of the respondents watching movies and series in the original; the respondents
would like this method of language learning to be practiced in their educational
institution.

Analyzing the data obtained, it becomes clear that many young people,
representatives of the current generation, speak English: 60% of the respondents can
speak it fluently without using complex advanced vocabulary, while 20% speak the
language at a low level, and still others 20% speak the language at an intermediate level.
This is not surprising, because English is a global language, and more and more people
are trying to master it. Usually, in the process of learning, people strive to improve their
skills and knowledge of the language. Of the respondents, 60% are ready to improve their
level, but express uncertainty, and 40% are looking for effective methods to improve
their knowledge. There were no students who did not want to improve their skills among
the respondents.
Interestingly, the figures for watching films in English and the data for people who
are not fond of this method are the same. One-half of the respondents (50%) enjoy
watching movies in the original, while the other half (also 50%) do not. Such results may
be due to the fact that not all students strive to increase their knowledge, so half of the
respondents prefer to watch films and TV shows in their native language.
Traditionally, people watch movies in the original, pursuing several goals: getting
to know the culture of English-speaking countries, familiarizing themselves with natural
speech, expanding their vocabulary, and developing the perception of English-speaking
people. It should be noted that only a tenth of the respondents seek to get acquainted
with the culture of the people while watching a movie. This indicator shows that students
see this method not as a way to enrich themselves spiritually, but as an opportunity to
learn the language.
Less than a third of respondents (27%) answered that their primary goal when
watching films and series in English is to expand their vocabulary. This result is related to
the fact that the method of viewing video materials in the original is not the most
effective for acquiring new vocabulary. Of course, it can significantly increase your
vocabulary, but this requires a complex analysis of the episodes you have watched. Only a
few turn to him after watching a movie. It is known that films in the original are good at
developing habituation to speech by ear, and therefore many students choose this
method for oral practice. Most of the respondents correspond to this category (91%).
This means that many people have trouble understanding spoken language and turn to
English cinema to develop this skill. If we turn to the part of the sociological survey
participants who want to learn natural speech, it is worth noting that their number
amounted to 63% of the total number of respondents [7, p. 704].
Many of us will agree on this method and agree that watching movies in English is
both useful and at the same time entertaining process. The survey respondents followed
suit. Among the respondents, 91% would like such a method of learning English to be
cultivated in their educational institutions, but the remaining 9% express doubts and
show their attitude to this method with the wording “maybe” [6].
Other questions of the monitoring survey made it possible to assess the subjective
side of the work problem.
Few people take this method of language learning seriously, considering it just
entertainment. However, this is refuted by the number of respondents who consider
watching movies in English interesting and effective at the same time (100%). The
stereotype that films fail to teach language has been debunked with the help of this
sociological survey.

Speaking about the assimilation of information when watching films in the original
(71% of respondents), one can note the confidence of the respondents that in the process
of watching they have no difficulties in understanding speech.
However, the answer of 29% of the respondents expresses uncertainty, since they
chose the option “in principle, it is learned”. Perhaps this is due to the fact that many
choose films and series that do not correspond to their level of knowledge, and therefore
most of the material viewed can cause problems with the assimilation of information.
Also, one cannot exclude the fact that only some students know about the existence of
subtitles, which greatly facilitates perception [7, p. 1045]. Summing up all of the above, it
is worth noting that most of the respondents can speak English fluently without using
complex vocabulary of an advanced level, that is, they have an average level of knowledge
of the language. It can be assumed that the respondents are satisfied with their level of
language proficiency, so they have no desire to improve their skills.
The above information is confirmed by the results of the next question, which
analyzes the data obtained on the desire of students to improve their skills and
knowledge in the language. Also, 60% of respondents are ready to develop their level, but
they do not express much enthusiasm and confidence.
Analyzing the purposes for which this method is suitable, most students watch
films in the original mainly for two purposes: to familiarize themselves with natural
speech and to develop an understanding of English speech. Based on the indicators, the
information is well absorbed, but not everyone expresses confidence in this aspect. This
indicates that not all students are able to correctly select video materials for their level of
language proficiency. In terms of relevance, all respondents found this method
interesting and effective and would like their educational institution to practice this way
of learning English.
In the course of the work, recommendations were made for those who chose this
method of learning English.
- Choose the video that suits your needs.
-Choose the right videos to prevent the educational process from becoming
frustrating. For beginners at the Beginner level, it is better to stop at short cartoons -
videos that are more accessible for learning information by ear. And people with the
Advanced level (advanced) can watch almost any movie and series, despite an indefinite
amount of unfamiliar vocabulary.
- Watch a movie you know to start [1].
–
Turn on subtitles.
Despite a suitable movie, there may be problems with the perception of unfamiliar
speech. In this case, you should resort to the help of subtitles. Of course, you can watch
films in English with Uzbek and Russian subtitles, but in this case, you are watching a film
in your native language only with the background sound of English speech. This is useful,
as you get used to English speech, but this is an ineffective option. It is much more useful
to watch films with English subtitles (or without subtitles) because there is a complete
immersion in the language environment.
–
Write down and repeat unfamiliar vocabulary, open a dictionary (moreover, you
can use both book and online versions), and write down phrases with new vocabulary.
–
Rewatch the video if you come across quite a lot of new incomprehensible
vocabulary in the film.
- Use learned words.

Your level of language proficiency will improve only if you use actively the new
vocabulary from the films. Practice your speech in English. Before choosing a movie, you
should make sure that it is suitable for your level of knowledge so that the educational
process goes smoothly. In addition to practical recommendations, a list of films and
series offered for viewing for students with different levels of English proficiency was
compiled.
For students who are still in the first stages of learning English, films with simple
vocabulary and clear diction are suitable, such as:
• "Up" (Up)
- a fascinating story in the cartoon studio "Pixar" about traveling in the
jungle in a hot air balloon, which is great for beginners, as it is replete with colloquial
expressions:
–
Get away from me! - Get away from me!"
“Wait up, Mr!
- Wait for me!"
–
“We made it!
- We made it!"
“We are on our way! "We're on our way!" [8].
• "Finding Nemo" (Finding Nemo) is a bright cartoon about the life of fish, w
hich is
loved by viewers of all ages [3].
• "Private Detective Jack Stark" (Private detective Jack Stark)
- an extraordinary
educational series that will impress detective lovers [8].
A2 level students can smoothly transition to watching films such as:
• “Friends” is a treasure trove of current references to US culture and history in the
form of various colloquial expressions, idioms, proverbs and lots of jokes.
•“The Lion King” (The Lion King) is a cartoon that many loved in childhood [5].
• "Harry Potter"
(Harry Potter) - a series of adventure films that can make a full-
fledged English course (films about Harry Potter are attracted by the fact that not only
the plot, but also the vocabulary "grows up" with each subsequent film).
• "Raiders of the Lost Arc"
(Indiana Jones: Raiders of the Lost Ark) - an option for
those who already speak English at levels B1 - B2 [3].
• "Toy Story" (Toy Story)
- an animated film about the world of toys [4].
• «The Hunger Games» (The Hunger Games)
- a film adaptation of the bestseller of
the same name by Suzanne Collins with spectacular special effects and a very addictive
storyline [3].
Students who speak English at levels C1-C2 can expand the range of films and
series they can use to learn this language.
• "Pride and Prejudic
e" (Pride and Prejudice) - British series from the "BBC" with
authentic English [2].
•“The Crown” is a series that reveals important events from the life of Elizabeth II,
while attracting the viewer with its “royal” English. With the help of this series, y
ou can
enrich your vocabulary with historical and political vocabulary.
-A backflush - mass aggression;
-A confederacy - confederation;
- Monarchy - monarchy.
• "Peaky Blinders" (Peaky Blinders)
- a series where special local dialects are used,
such as drumming, cockney, etc. [2].
Results.
As a result of the research work, such a method of learning English as watching
films and TV shows in English was studied. It was found that the study of vocabulary and

grammar of a foreign language can be enjoyed and with the help of this method, you can
combine business with pleasure. Watching films in English, you develop an
understanding and join live speech. This method expands vocabulary as your brain
unconsciously memorizes new vocabulary as you watch. Watching a movie in the original
will be useful in order to learn natural speech and colloquial vocabulary, which will be
necessary when communicating with native speakers.
In the course of this research work, a sociological survey of respondents aged 14 to
17 was conducted, which helped to identify the relevance of this method of learning a
language. Most respondents find this method interesting and effective and would like
their educational institutions to practice this way of learning English.
Conclusion
.
In conclusion, we can say that learning through movies and TV shows is effective
and fun. This way of learning a language is a great option for those who are looking for an
alternative to grammar and vocabulary writing tasks. Every English learner can improve
their speech and accent by watching even short episodes daily. This method of learning
the language allows you to "plunge" into the language environment and learn "live"
English. With the help of films, the student "immerses" in the culture and language of the
English-speaking state. Watching a movie helps develop various aspects of language
learning. As a result, watching movies and TV series in English makes it possible to get
acquainted with modern colloquial variations.
