ABSTRACT
This article is about proper nouns and onomastics which is the field of linguistics. Proper nouns form a special
subsystem in a language with its own patterns, which are not found outside this system. The question of distinguishing
a proper name from a noun is one of the primary problems of onomastics, as its solution allows not only to reveal the
linguistic specificity of onyms, but also to determine the boundaries of the onomastic space.
KEYWORDS
Proper nouns, common nouns, onomastics, onyms, scientific research.
INTRODUCTION
Proper names are objects of scientific research
conducted in areas such as phonetics, word formation,
morphology, etymology, stylistics and sociolinguistics.
All of these areas are related to onomastics, which is a
special part of linguistics. The term onomastics from
Greek translates as “the art of giving names” or
“relating to a name.” The original meaning of this term
is becoming especially relevant today, since many
categories of proper names are associated with human
creative activity. These are the names of literary works
- titles; names of publications and their headings; so-
called advertising names and names of commercial
companies. We have to mention the object of our
linguistic interest - the names of English, American and
Uzbek films.

Onomastics, being an essential part,it must be
emphasized that proper names are units of language,
and therefore linguistic analysis of onyms are aimed at
identifying their linguistic and functional essence,
should prevail over ot
her types of analysis. “A name is
a word and, like all words, it is subject to the laws of
language, that is, it is subject to the knowledge of
linguistics,” writes V.A. Nikonov . Onims are included in
the lexical system of the language, but at the same
time, onomastic vocabulary differs significantly from
common nouns. That is why proper names form a
special subsystem in a language with its own patterns,
which are not found outside this system.
Consequently, general linguistic categories receive
specific expression here. The main problems of proper
names were identified in the late 60s - early 70s of the
XX century: the place of proper names in the language
system and their difference from common nouns;
specific semantics of onyms; national cultural and
functional
characteristics,
etc.

RESULTS
The question of distinguishing a proper name from a
noun is one of the primary problems of onomastics, as
its solution allows not only to reveal the linguistic
specificity of onyms, but also to determine the
boundaries of the onomastic space. This question is
debatable, and explained by several reasons: Firstly,
the composition of onyms is heterogeneous (of
course, it is impossible to put the names of people and
the names of works of verbal art in one row); secondly,
the boundary between onomastic and noun
vocabulary is quite elastic, as a result of which it
becomes possible to move from one class of words to
another; thirdly, the number of proper names is
constantly increasing, as new, individual objects
appear in the surrounding world, which receive
individual names.
DISCUSSION
Some researchers rely on the conceptual principle,
which is represented in the names. Such an approach
allows to compare the structural-linguistic content of
proper nouns with their meaning. Other scientists,
considering the issue of semantics, turn to the verbal
use of names, which concretizes their perception, fills
this or that information. Thus, nominal names
designate the subject «through the concept», proper -
through the direct correlation of the name with the
subject. For that reason common nouns are
classificators, аnd proper nouns are differentiators.
CONCLUSION
They came to the conclusion that the proper name has
meaning, as it includes three types of relations, -
denotative, significant and structural-linguistic, but

their quality is somewhat peculiar compared to the

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
The development of society has a significant impact on
onomastics, as political, economic and social changes
stimulate the emergence of new subjects in the broad
sense of the word, which are unique in their kind.
