has significant implications for developing linguistic

and intercultural communication competences. This

article aims to explore the role of phraseology in

developing these competences.

Understanding Phraseology

Phraseology refers to the study of fixed expressions,

also known as multi-word units, which are commonly

used in a language. These expressions can be idioms,

collocations, proverbs, or any other fixed expressions

that are used in a particular language. Phraseology is

an essential component of language as it helps in

understanding the meaning of a sentence or a text. It

also plays a crucial role in the development of

communication skills.

Phraseology and Linguistic Competences

Linguistic competence refers to the ability to use

language effectively in different contexts. Phraseology

plays a significant role in the development of linguistic

competences. Understanding fixed expressions is

essential to understand the meaning of a sentence or a

text. For example, the idiom "to kick the bucket"

means "to die," but it cannot be understood through

the literal meaning of its words. Therefore,

understanding fixed expressions is crucial to develop

linguistic competences.

Collocations are another essential aspect of

phraseology that helps in developing linguistic

competences. Collocations are words that are

commonly used together in a language. For example,

the words "heavy rain" or "hard work" are

collocations. Understanding collocations is essential to

develop linguistic competences as it helps in using the

right words in the right context.

Phraseology

and

Intercultural

Communication

Competences

Intercultural communication competence refers to the

ability to communicate effectively with people from

different cultures. Understanding phraseology is

essential to develop intercultural communication

competences. Different cultures have different fixed

expressions, and understanding them is crucial to

communicate effectively with people from different

cultures.

For example, the English language has many idioms

that are not commonly used in other languages.

Understanding

these

idioms

is

essential

to

communicate effectively with English speakers.

Similarly, different cultures have different proverbs,

and understanding them is crucial to communicate

effectively with people from different cultures.

Phraseology and Language Learning

Phraseology plays a significant role in language

learning. Understanding fixed expressions is essential

to learn a language effectively. Learning fixed

expressions helps in understanding the meaning of a

sentence or a text. It also helps in developing

communication skills and intercultural communication

competences.

There are several ways to teach phraseology in

language learning. One way is to provide learners with

a list of fixed expressions and their meanings. Another

way is to teach fixed expressions through their use in

context. This helps learners understand how fixed

expressions are used in different contexts. Teaching

fixed expressions through their use in context also

helps in developing communication skills.

Phraseology and Language Teaching

Phraseology plays a crucial role in language teaching.

Understanding fixed expressions is essential to teach a

language effectively. Teachers need to understand the

fixed expressions used in a language and how they are

used in different contexts. This helps in teaching fixed

expressions effectively to learners.

Teaching fixed expressions can be done through

various techniques. One way is to use authentic

materials such as newspapers, magazines, and films,

which contain fixed expressions commonly used in the

language.

LITERATURE AND REVIEW

The role of phraseology in developing linguistic and

intercultural communication competences has been

extensively studied in the literature. Various studies

have highlighted the importance of understanding

fixed expressions such as idioms and collocations in

language learning and communication.

One study by Pawlak and Arnaudova (2013)

investigated the role of phraseology in developing

intercultural communicative competence. The study

found that understanding fixed expressions is crucial

to communicate effectively with people from different

cultures. It also suggested that teaching fixed

expressions through their use in context and authentic

materials is an effective way to develop intercultural

communication competences.

Another study by Boers and Demecheleer (2001)

focused on the importance of collocations in language

learning. The study found that understanding

collocations is essential to develop linguistic

competences as it helps in using the right words in the

right context. The study also suggested that teaching

collocations through games and activities is a more

effective way to learn and retain them.

Furthermore, a study by Benczes and Kormos (2014)

investigated the role of idioms in developing language

proficiency. The study found that idioms play a crucial

role in developing communicative competence as they

convey cultural and social meaning. It also suggested

that teaching idioms through their cultural and social

contexts is an effective way to develop language

proficiency.

Overall, the literature suggests that phraseology,

including fixed expressions such as idioms and

collocations, plays a significant role in developing

linguistic

and

intercultural

communication

competences. Teaching and learning phraseology

through context and authentic materials, games and

activities, and cultural and social contexts is an

effective way to develop effective communication

skills.

RESULT AND DISCUSSION

The role of phraseology in developing linguistic and

intercultural

communication

competences

has

significant implications for language learning and

teaching. Understanding fixed expressions such as

idioms and collocations is essential to comprehend the

meaning of a sentence or a text and to communicate

effectively in a language. It also helps in developing

intercultural communication competences as different

cultures have different fixed expressions.

Teaching and learning phraseology through context

and authentic materials, games and activities, and

cultural and social contexts is an effective way to

develop

effective

communication

skills.

Contextualized learning of fixed expressions helps

learners understand how they are used in different

contexts, which is crucial for effective communication.

Authentic materials such as newspapers, magazines,

and films provide exposure to fixed expressions

commonly used in the language. Games and activities

make learning more engaging and memorable, while

teaching fixed expressions through cultural and social

contexts helps learners understand the cultural and

social meaning of these expressions.

In conclusion, phraseology is a vital component of

language learning and communication. It plays a crucial

role in developing linguistic and intercultural

communication competences. Teaching and learning

phraseology through context and authentic materials,

games and activities, and cultural and social contexts is

an effective way to develop effective communication

skills. Therefore, it is essential to incorporate

phraseology in language learning and teaching to

develop

effective

communication

skills

and

intercultural communication competences.

CONCLUSION

In conclusion, phraseology plays a crucial role in

developing linguistic and intercultural communication

competences. As a subfield of linguistics, phraseology

focuses on the study of multi-word units in language,

which are an essential component of effective

communication. Understanding the meaning and

usage of phrases, idioms, and collocations is key to

achieving fluency in a language, as these expressions

often cannot be translated directly and their meaning

can only be inferred from context.

Moreover, phraseology is closely linked to intercultural

communication competences, as it reflects the cultural

norms and values of a community. By learning the

common phrases and idioms used in a language,

learners can gain insight into the cultural context in

which the language is used, which is crucial for

effective communication with native speakers.

Overall, the study of phraseology can greatly enhance

learners' linguistic and intercultural communication

competences, enabling them to communicate more

effectively and accurately in cross-cultural contexts.
