ABSTRACT
The establishment of the Fund of the Directorate of Art Exhibitions of Uzbekistan was historically linked to the creation
of the Academy of Arts of the USSR. In 1947, the All-Russian Academy of Arts was transformed into the Academy of
Arts of the USSR in order to promote the development of fine arts in the USSR. The main tasks of the Academy were
to ensure the sustainable growth and development of Soviet fine arts in all its forms, to actively support the
development of artists' creativity, to work out issues of art theory and history, to develop Soviet fine arts, and to train
and educate creative specialists (painters and graphic artists).

INTRODUCTION
The Exhibition Department of the USSR Academy of
Arts was established in 1948 as the Department of
Propaganda and Exhibitions. The scope of its duties is
easy to understand from the name itself. During the
initial period of the department's activity (1948-1952)
about 40 exhibitions were held in the exhibition halls
of the Academy of Arts of the USSR in Moscow. The
exhibitions held are divided into the following groups
according to their essence, content and purposes:

anniversaries.
The main counterpart of the Academy of Arts was the
Directorate of Art Exhibitions and Panoramas of the
Committee of Arts under the USSR Council of
Ministers, transformed in 1966 into the All-Union Art
and Production Combine under the USSR Council of
Ministers. In 1974 it was transformed into the Combine
named after E. Vuchetich.
The Directorate of Art Exhibitions in Uzbekistan was
founded in 1959 and to this day is engaged in
organizing art exhibitions in our republic and in foreign
countries, popularizing the art of Uzbekistan through
international and national exhibitions in our country
and in the world. Throughout its activity, the
organization
has
been
organizing
large-scale
permanent and traveling exhibitions together with
museums
and
galleries
of
Uzbekistan.
The
Directorate's collection of more than 15,000 works of
visual and practical art, which has grown over the
years, is the basis for its recognition as a specialized
museum institution.
The period of establishment of the directorate
coincides with the stage of formation and
strengthening of European forms of fine arts in
Uzbekistan. Important changes occurred in the artistic
life of the country that had not been seen before. In
1954, the Faculty of Fine Arts was opened at the
Tashkent Theater Institute, and the transformation of
this institution into a theater-art institute is an
important historical event. Those who wished to
seriously pursue fine arts studied in Russian art
schools, and now the creation of such an opportunity
in our country has laid the foundation for the
development of our national fine arts. In particular, a
year ago, in 1953, a number of Uzbek artists - Nemat
Kuzybaev, Rahim Akhmedov, Tachat Oganesov,
Mannon Saidov - studied at the Repin Institute of
Painting, Sculpture and Architecture in Leningrad, who
later made a great contribution to the art of
Uzbekistan through their creative and pedagogical
work.
As a result of the growing number of local artists, the
need to organize exhibitions on a national and all-
Union scale increased. As early as 1954, a national art
exhibition was held, in which young artists, along with
artists who had worked in the 1930s and 40s,
participated with their portrait sketches, historical and
genre paintings.
Kuzma Fedorovich Tkachenko, an art historian, an
expert of the USSR Ministry of Culture on the
preservation of cultural heritage, was appointed the
first director of the Directorate of Art Exhibitions and
Panoramas. Tkachenko headed the Directorate of Art
Exhibitions from 1959 to 1972. From the moment of its
establishment, the directorate was under the
jurisdiction of the Ministry of Culture; later it was part

of the Main Directorate for the Protection of Cultural
Monuments of the USSR Ministry of Culture and the
Department of Museum Affairs of the USSR Ministry of
Culture.
By the decision of the First President of the Republic of
Uzbekistan I.Karimov dated 23.01.1997 (PF-1701) the
Directorate of Art Exhibitions, which until 1997 was a
part of the Ministry of Culture, was included in the
Academy of Arts of Uzbekistan, preserving the status
of the former state institution of museum type and all
its functions. Since 2006, the Directorate, which moved
with its staff and collection to different places in the
city, took its place in the Central Exhibition Hall of the
Academy of Arts of Uzbekistan at Sh. Rashidova, 40.
The building of the former “Rassom” factory was
transferred to the fund of the Directorate for storage
of exhibits and all outbuildings. Since 2007, capital
works on repairing the 4-storey building where the
exhibits are stored began. In 2008 all collections and
economic departments of the Foundation were
transferred to the t
erritory “B”. At present, the
building and the yard continue to be adapted to the
Directorate of Exhibitions.
The largest exhibition pavilion of the city (2200 square
meters) was transferred to the Central Exhibition Hall,
and the status of exhibitions organized by the
Directorate has also changed. These are large-scale
national exhibitions and personal report exhibitions
approved by the Academy of Arts of Uzbekistan and
the Association of Artists.
As before, exhibitions of creative heritage of artists
and folk masters from their fund collections included in
the annual plan of the Directorate of Exhibitions are
organized. The Fund of the Directorate of Art
Exhibitions is considered one of the largest and
artistically important collections of our country.
The formation of the Directorate's collection dates
back to the 1960s. The Fund of the Directorate of Art
Exhibitions was founded with the presentation of
dozens of graphic works by the State Art Museum of
Uzbekistan. Subsequently, the collection was
replenished by the State Expert Council on the basis of
contracts with artists and folk masters, works
purchased by the Directorate at exhibitions and
expeditions, as well as gifts from artists and patrons.
The interesting and well-organized collection is very
versatile, reflecting the history of the development of
fine arts in Uzbekistan and giving an idea of the whole
spectrum of stylistic trends that emerged in the
country's art in the second half of the twentieth
century. The collection includes works by artists who
began their work in the 1920s and 30s. These rich
retrospective collections allow future generations of
famous artists and folk masters of Uzbekistan to show
their creative heritage at exhibitions. First of all, these
are the author's collections of classic artists, founders

of the national art school - A. Abdullaev, Ch. Akhmarov,
R. Akhmedov, N. Kashina, N. Kuzybaev, M. Saidov, R.
Timurov and others. It should be noted that the genres
of the collection of works are also diverse, these are
thematic compositions, portraits, landscapes, still lifes.
Portraits include a collection of self-portraits and
portraits of artists.
The collection of paintings from the 1960-80s is one of
the most important collections of the Directorate.

able to express their artistic priorities. The works of
these artists, who perfectly mastered the classical
school of the time and brought something new into the
framework of the theme, are distinguished by the fact
that they reflect the bright events of life. Undoubtedly,
the collection of works by the generation of artists of
the 1970s - Sh. Abdurashidov, S. Abdullaev, B. Jalolov,
A. Ikromjonov, A. Mirzaev, J. Umarbekova, S.
Rakhmetova, V. Ohunova, S. Alibekov, A. Krikis, Z.
Saidjonov, M. Tokhtaev, V. Chub, M. Sadikov, V.
Apukhtin, A. Mamajanov, A. Ponomarev, B. Mukhtorov
and others. The works of artists of this generation
demonstrate stylistic diversity and significant harmony
with the “avant
-
garde” of the 1920
-1930s. The
Foundation also holds works by artists of the late 1980s
and early 1990s - F. Akhmadaliev, A. Isayev, M. Isanov,
G. Kadyrov, A. Nur, K. Adylovv, J. Usmonovv, A.
Turdiyev, D. Rakhmanbekova, M. Fozili, A. Khatamov
and others.
One of the largest in the collection of the Foundation is
the collection of graphics - it includes all kinds of
graphic techniques: original drawings, etchings,
linocuts, lithographs, woodcuts, monotypes, and
watercolors.
The Directorate's holdings contain works by masters of
applied art of Uzbekistan, whose names became
legends in the twentieth century and whose legacy is
the pride of the folk art of our republic. These are the
masters of famous schools of ceramics - master
Umarkul Jorakulov from Samarkand, master Mahkam
Ablakulov
from
Urgut,
master
Asadulla
Khudoynazarov from Kattakurgan, the dynasty of
potters Rakhimovs from Tashkent, master Narzullaev
from Gijduvan, famous masters from Rishtan - Ibragim
Komilov, Ashuraly Yuldashev, Sharofiddin Yusupov,
Alisher Nazirov, Rustam Usmanov, Gurumsaray
pottery masters Hakim Satimov, Mahmud Ragimov,
Maksutali Turapov, Hafiz Shermatov, the oldest
masters of Khorezm - Madraim Bekchanov, Gurbanbai
Doschanov, Raimberdi Matchanov. The Fund also
holds embroidery, needlework, carpet weaving,
musical instruments, wood carvings and paintings,
glass and metal works of art from different regions of
Uzbekistan.

Among the rare works of the Fund is a collection of
works by artists of theater and cinema of Uzbekistan,
a type of artistic creation that has practically
disappeared from the expositions - a collection of
posters.
The collection of the Directorate of Exhibitions is
regularly enriched with new works by masters of fine
and applied arts, using funds allocated from the
national budget, as well as gifts from artists and
patrons of the arts.
Among the gifts are several hundred works by the Art
Fund of Uzbekistan, Nadezhda Kashina, Samig
Faizullovich Abdullaev, Varsham Yeremyan, a
collection of sketches by Sergey Redkin, Mahmud
Akhmedov,
Maxim
Vardanyan,
Arnold
Gan,
Christopher Kahn, Pavel Kichko, Andrei Krikis, Evgeny
Panov and Leonid Ryabtsev, sculptural portraits and
compositions by Normurod Negmatov, decorative
sculpture by Gennady Odintsov, installations by Julia
Alagir, ceramics by Denov and Samarkand masters.
In the 1960-70s the collection was enriched with a
collection of prints sent to the traveling exhibition
from the All-Union Vuchetich Production and Art
Combine. These are the works of famous graphic
artists from Moscow, Leningrad, as well as Estonia,
Latvia, Ukraine, Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan. In 2000
the collection was enriched with paintings by the
Moscow group “Kolst”, works by Egyptian and
Ukrainian painters, graphics by Alexei Dmitriev, who
worked in Altai, ceramics by Crimean masters, and
photographs by Vera Zemlyanskaya, taken in Africa
and Nepal in 2000.
In general, the collection of the funds of the
Directorate of Art Exhibitions is quite diverse. The
collection, reflecting the development of fine and
applied arts of Uzbekistan from the 1940-50s to the
present, had a historical retrospective.
The works in the fund of the Directorate of Art
Exhibitions represent the art of our country in many
countries of the world - Austria, Bulgaria, Belgium,
Great Britain, Hungary, Germany, Italy, Spain, Canada,
Cyprus, China, Korea, Luxembourg, Mexico, Mongolia,
Poland, Portugal, Senegal, USA, Turkey, Sweden,
Finland, France, Japan, as well as Russia, Azerbaijan,
Armenia, Belarus, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldavia, Ukraine,
Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Spain, Estonia
and other countries. And now the Directorate of Art
Exhibitions continues to fulfill its duties as the
“authorized representative” of Uzbekistan's art
abroad.
Annually, more than 8000 works are presented at the
exhibitions organized by the Directorate, including
more than 1000 works from its own collection. The
movement of collection exhibits ranges from 3 to 28
percent, which is an amazing indicator for museum
practice.

Scientific and educational activities are one of the most
important components of the Exhibition Directorate's
activities. Within the framework of exhibitions,
scientific seminars, conferences, creative meetings,
master classes are held, traveling exhibitions in the city
and parks are organized, allowing viewers to properly
focus on complex issues of contemporary art.
The team of researchers of the Directorate of
Exhibitions will have to do a lot of work on cataloging
and digital processing of the existing collection,
archiving of exhibition materials, as well as
replenishing the collections with works of new
generations of artists of Uzbekistan that have not been
exhibited. museums. In the future it is expected to
realize the plan of reconstruction of the Central
Exhibition Hall of the Directorate of Art Exhibitions and
construction of an equipped museum fund.
In general, the funds of the Directorate of Exhibitions
make up a significant part of the museum fund of
Uzbekistan. In fact, in the future it will become the
basis for the creation of the Museum of Modern Art,
which will present all the main directions of
development of fine arts of Uzbekistan in the second
half of the twentieth century - the beginning of the
eleventh century.
The scientific team of the Directorate of Art Exhibitions
was given a priority task to carry out such major works
as digitalization of the existing collection and archiving
of exhibition materials. One of the important tasks of
the Directorate of Exhibitions is the preparation for the
publication of catalogs on the fine arts of Uzbekistan.
It is planned to publish not only catalogs and booklets,
but also advertising materials for exhibitions, as well as
such large albums as “Anthology of Painting of
Uzbekistan” and “Anthology of Sculpture of
Uzbekistan”.
As a museum institution and exhibition hall, the
function of the Directorate of Art Exhibitions is
important and responsible. It performs a special
cultural function - a center of enlightenment,
information and aesthetic education.
From 1991 to 1997, new works were accepted into the
collection of the Directorate of Art Exhibitions through
the Expert Commission of the Ministry of Culture of
Uzbekistan. From 1997 to 2007 - through the Expert
Commission of the Academy of Arts of Uzbekistan and
the Expert and Methodological Commission of the
Academy of Arts of Uzbekistan, from 2007 to the
present day new additions to the collection are formed
through the Expert Commission of the Academy of
Arts of Uzbekistan and payments are made from the
budget allocated for these purposes to the Directorate
of Art Exhibitions. The collection department deals
with the preservation of works of art, the preparation
of photo albums for passporting and cataloguing
collections, the updating and preparation of negatives,

and the creation of electronic versions of books and
catalogs.
The Directorate of Art Exhibitions includes the
following departments, each of which fulfills a
different task:
The Exhibition Department is considered the main
department of the activities of the Directorate of Art
Exhibitions and is in charge of organizing large and
small international and national exhibitions. Until 2011,
the Department organized exhibitions at the Center
for
Contemporary
Art
(Tashkent
House
of
Photography), and to date - at the Central Exhibition
Hall. In addition, it has been engaged in organizing
traveling exhibitions throughout the country and
abroad, preparing scientific guides and promotional
materials for exhibitions, and preparing scientific
publications on the art of Uzbekistan, including works
of the Directorate of Art Exhibitions fund.
The Scientific-Expert-Methodological Council of the
Directorate of Art Exhibitions is headed by the heads of
the Directorate of Art Exhibitions departments -
research workers, invited experts and deputy directors
for scientific work.
Fond Department - provides passportization, storage
and scientific study of more than 18 thousand
collections of contemporary fine and folk art of
Uzbekistan;
- submits works for exhibitions and accepts them again
after the exhibition;
- carries out preventive and repair works together with
the repair service;
- Inventory and account for the collection of the
Directorate of Art Exhibitions according to the rules.
The Foundation Department staff is currently in the
process of reforming the reserve and electronizing the
parish book.
Among the departments that the Directorate of Art
Exhibitions has lost today are the photo laboratory,
preparation of photo albums for passportization of
collections and compilation of catalogs, creation of
electronic versions of books (“Arrivals Book”),
creation of photo albums. archive of exhibition
activities of the Directorate of Art Exhibitions, as well
as activities of the Directorate, including those
important for the fund.
The restoration plant and its carpentry workshop also
ceased operations today. It is considered to be one of
the important departments of the organization that
preserves works of art and deals with the maintenance
and cleaning of works before and after the exhibition.
And the carpentry workshop makes baguettes, repairs
wooden exhibits and prepares the necessary
equipment for the exhibition.

The library has an archive of exhibitions organized by
the Directorate of Art Exhibitions, scientific and
methodical literature related to the field of art for
scientific staff. In recent years, the library's collection
has been enriched with art publications, albums and
catalogs published at the expense of the Directorate of
Art Exhibitions (the magazine “San'at”, the newspaper
“Literature and Art of Uzbekistan”). The library's
books are currently stored in a small storeroom of the
Central Exhibition Hall.
In honor of the 60th anniversary of the Directorate of
Art Exhibitions, the organization came up with the idea
of creating an album reflecting historical activities, and
it was implemented in 2021.
One of the most important tasks of collecting is the
systematization and scientific organization of existing
collections. Each museum should develop its own
classifications for specific collections. The organization
of authorized commissions for the purchase of funds,
capable of analyzing new acquisitions and conducting
an expert assessment of existing ones, will help
improve the efficiency of acquiring museum
collections. The ability to properly organize items is an
equally important quality, because the complete and
diverse collections of this museum provide the
necessary basis for work.
CONCLUSION
In conclusion, it should be noted that the acquisition of
funds is always subject to changes related to ideology,
the emergence of new ideas and the formation of
trends, but this is what reflects social and historical
events and preserves them for the future.
