ABSTRACT
One of the main tasks facing the education system today is developing core competencies in students necessary for
their success in the modern world. Education now focuses not only on imparting traditional knowledge but also on
forming individuals who can adapt to social, economic, technological, and cultural changes. Core competencies and
skills are central in this process. This article analyzes the priority of core competencies, their role, and significance in
the educational process.
KEYWORDS
Core competencies, skills, competency, communication.
INTRODUCTION
The
terms "core
competencies"
and
"skills
prioritization" are primarily used in the contexts of
education and work. Each represents the knowledge,
skills, and abilities necessary to accomplish tasks or
achieve goals. Core competencies encompass general
abilities essential for performing specific tasks, while
skills refer to expertise gained through mastery of a
profession or job. These two concepts are used
together because skills begin to form after acquiring
competency. In other words, competency must come
before skill acquisition.
Core competencies are a set of basic skills and abilities
essential for students to operate successfully in various
life situations. These competencies allow students to
not only understand the knowledge presented by their
teachers but also apply it in practice.

There
are
several
approaches
to
defining
competencies:
•
In the American approach, competencies
are seen as behavioral models that demonstrate
necessary skills and knowledge.
•
In the European approach, competencies
are viewed as descriptions of work tasks and expected
outcomes in line with accepted standards.
RESULTS
Competence and professionalism are similar but have
distinct meanings. Professionalism involves knowledge
and a commitment to work, while competency also
includes the ability to apply knowledge effectively.
Each competency type includes a combination of skills,
knowledge, and abilities that can be evaluated through
observation of actions in fulfilling job responsibilities.
CONCLUSION
Core competencies and skills are among the main
priorities
of
modern
education.
Developing
competencies like critical thinking, communication,
technological literacy, and problem-solving will help
shape students into successful individuals. This process
increases educational effectiveness and prepares the
younger generation to meet the demands and needs of
a global society. Forming competency is a continuous,
step-by-step process, starting in higher education
institutions and continuing under the guidance of
experienced mentors in the workplace.
