Abstract:
This article discusses the importance of using ICT for teaching writing skills at
schools effectively. In the article there are given advantages of ICT while teaching writing for
school children.
Key words:
writing, ICT, hardware, software, Net materials, visual-figurative thinking,
internet possibilities, gateway sites.
It is known that ICT century has changed everything around us, conditions of our life,
formation and education, attitude towards learning. This century affects much more to education
field. State standards are morally outdated, many teachers emphasized that there is a lack of
competent approach, focused on the individuality of the student. Now, in the XXI century,
international education is growing. To develop and go forward is our main goal. Nowadays in
order to keep pace with times we should study foreign languages. Everyone knows that today
people who has a knowledge of English can have their place in the society. Therefore, nowadays
to teach foreign languages with strong attention is essential, teachers should be careful to choose
the suitable methods and forms of organizing the lesson process.
These years, the using of new information technologies in lessons has been raised
increasingly in our country. Our main goal in teaching foreign languages is considered to
develop learners’ communicative culture, to show in practice how the learners learn foreign
languages. In this teaching process computer technology, internet resources serve as the best
approach. After entering of a computer to our life ICT becomes an essential tool in teaching
process. ICT helps teachers to increase students’ interest and develop visual-figurative thinking.
We no longer imagine a modern lesson without the use of information technology. It is known
that the use of ICT in the lessons shows its good results, make students show their cognitive,
intellectual and independent abilities.
In the education system ICT consists of two types. The first type of ICT is called hardware
and it involves computer, printer, scanner, camera, video camera, audio and video tape recorder.
The second type of ICT is software and it involves electronic textbooks, simulators, test
environments, information sites, search systems Internet and etc. These days, computer is
integral part of education process, teachers use computers in teaching foreign languages in order
to improve the quality of training and effectiveness of control. With the help of computers
teachers can prepare presentations for the lessons. Through presentations teachers can explain
the lesson. If teachers use computer presentations in the lesson students have the opportunity to
listen to the topic and to see and write main points of the topic, examples related to the topic.
Hence, the use of presentations allows to every teacher to increase mastering of the material by
students and conduct classes at a modern level, instead of using a regular blackboard projecting
slide films from the computer screen to a large wall-mounted screen or a personal computer
(laptop) for each student. Colorfully designed presentations attract students’ attention to the
lessons. Presentations can involve animation effects, the form of text, a diagram, a graphic, a
drawing. Before teachers cut and paste pictures on the board, now they can find pictures with the
help of internet and insert them on the slide right away.
There are a lot of educational programs that provide a large number of exercises for the
lesson. In order to use these programs actively teachers need enough knowledge about using of
computer skills. Because it plays a main role in working with learners. Teaching with the help of
new modern methods are opposed to traditional teaching foreign languages. Nowadays this
century’s youth demand from teachers using of ICT in classes. Because they use Internet
services actively in their study and in their daily life. They emphasized that there are a lot of

advantages of using Internet. Nowadays teachers should create real life situations, should find
materials relevant to their students’ life in order to improve their students’ communication skills
in a foreign language. In this century everyone can find any material which he or she needs. In
one word, the worldwide network has become an integral part of modern society. Every modern
teacher has to know to use the resources of the global Internet. Because it is the requirement of
modern reality.
Some years ago, teachers and students can imagine their English classes without the use of
ICT. But now no one can imagine their English lessons without ICT. The use of ICT in the
educational process creates much more opportunities, it increases the practical process of the
class. In the English lessons the teacher can carry out methodological, pedagogical and
psychological principles through the use of ICT and Internet resources. When teachers use
computers in class, they form a stable motivation for students to learn foreign language activities
in class, solve communicative problems.
In the XXI century, learners of the English language need the practical knowledge of
English in everyday communication and in the professional sphere because of the higher
demands of the society. The volumes of information are growing and we cannot be aware of a
whole range of information always. ICT has enormous capabilities. Also, we should not forget
the role of the teacher in a class. Because the use of multimedia technologies cannot provide a
significant pedagogical effect without a teacher. These technologies are considered ways of
teaching process. The computer in the educational process is not a mechanical teacher, it is a tool
that enhances and expands the possibilities of its teaching activity.
Asking whether technology can improve education is like asking whether experiments can
improve science education. Everything depends on what kind of technology is introduced, how it
is used, its design and how teachers are supported to use it.
For example, students are learning to write formal letters. To teach how to write formal
letters teachers can use presentations that involve variety of pictures related to real-life situations,
examples of formal letters, academic words’ table, the table of the whole process of writing
formal letters. Presentations serve as visual aids. Academic words are used in formal letters.
Hence, students are made to learn by heart these words in order to write formal letters. In order
to check how they learn these words some activities are given.
The Internet possibilities are endless in the language classroom but its effectiveness in
practice is contingent mainly on the way a teacher and students work with it. They add we
should be aware of the importance of our general methodology. Teeler and Gray [2, 22] express
the idea that on the Internet everyone can find a convenient material of any type but the two
points play a decisive role in using the web: search speed and ability to modify the material.
They point out a diversity of users as a disadvantage of course books [2, 36]. “The topics they
deal with may be irrelevant or difficult to discuss with your class, and you may sometimes need
alternative topics and texts. The Internet can greatly simplify the task of finding them.”
Teeler and Gray’s ideas about the Internet possibilities are important and essential. Indeed,
the Internet has unlimited conveniences and capabilities. In order to increase its effectiveness in
the classroom, a teacher needs to know how to use it, and work with it. If the teacher finds the
materials relevant to the theme and the students work with the materials with enthusiasm, only
then the Internet will be more efficient. Scientists also believe that anyone can find what he or
she needs on the Internet, but there are two important factors that play an important role: 1.
search speed; 2. ability to change the material. In fact, you can find all kinds of exercises and
materials on the Internet. However, teacher cannot give the materials without modifying. The
topics may be irrelevant or difficult to discuss with the class. Hence, it is the best way to make
additional changes on the material considering the age, level, or interests of students. For
example, students are made to write about their winter holiday. When teachers search activities,
essays, exercises, materials about winter holidays on the Internet. They can find a variety of
materials about winter holidays. Teachers can choose and select materials according to their

students’ level, age, interests. For example: there are given some points for writing “my winter
holiday” essay:
1.Your essay should consist of 200 words
2.You should use more academic words.
3.Avoid using of I, you, we pronouns.
4.Describe the best event of your winter holiday.
However, teacher must definitely keep in mind the following idea of Rogger Ebert: “If the
Net is the most useful research tool ever available… it is also the most misleading, dangerous
and seductive [2, 16-17].” We must consider whether the material found on the net has any faults.
Besides the aspect of security, Teeler and Gray draw teacher’s attention to the question of
suitability for a particular level of a class and a theme. Materials can be unnecessarily condensed,
uninteresting or inappropriate. They state: “It is important to look at Net materials as closely as
you would at materials from any other source, anywhere necessary take the time to adapt them to
suit your situation [2, 37].”
If we pay attention closely to the idea of Rogger Ebert we understood that teachers should
be careful at working on the Internet, selecting and choosing materials. Indeed, the Net is rich in
a variety of information and we can find any subject matter, any materials any time and use it
totally. That is why Rogger Ebert has described the Net as the most useful research tool and he
also considers the Internet to be the most misleading, scary and harmful. Certainly, there are
reasons for this. All information and materials we get from the internet cannot be reliable. Some
of the materials on the Internet are false. It has some faults. Therefore, when searching for the
material on the Internet, we should be aware of the fact that it is confused or false or true on the
Internet. New information is posted every day, every hour. But not all of them are reliable.
Therefore, scientists Teeler and Gray emphasized that when working with the material of the
Internet we should pay attention to look at Net materials more carefully than other materials
from any other source, at any given time, we need to find the time to adapt these materials to our
environment.
Flexibility of a teacher is necessary not only towards the materials but also with respect to
changeable nature of the Net as a whole. “The Internet is a dynamic entity where things are
continuously evolving – addresses change, sites close down, technology becomes outdated, and
products come and go [1, 65].
As noted above, the Internet is constantly changing. Addresses change, sites close down,
technologies are outdated, old technologies are replaced by new ones, products come and go.
This news changes happen every day. Therefore, the teacher should not only be flexible with the
materials, but also should adapt to the changeable nature of the Internet.
In this context Teeler and Gray [2, 17] emphasized usefulness of the existence of gateway
sites that consist of: “lists of links to other resource sites, as well as superb material of their
own.” Moreover, they offer suggestions how to work with and browse the Internet for whatever
is needed. The organizations and individuals who keep the gateways for English language
teacher spend a lot of time by searching, categorizing and updating links. For this reason, it is
worthwhile to pay attention to the gateways.
Taking into account the views of Teeler and Gray about gateway sites, we can see that
gateway sites have some advantages, benefits in educational process. There are lists of links of
gateways to other resource sites, as well as superb material of their own. Therefore, it is
important to pay attention to the gateways.
Learning can take place anywhere as long as we are equipped with the right tool and know
how to use it appropriately. Students can now enjoy the excitement of learning as the lesson is
now beyond the four walls. The students can also get connected with other people from around
the globe and share their thoughts and ideas. Teachers can now use social media to gauge the
students in a way better than what they could have possibly done before. Studies conducted by
PEW Research Centre on the use of digital tools on students’ writing suggest that teachers view
positively the impact of the internet and digital technologies on students.

Indeed, with the advent of new technologies our society is developing day by day. The
internet has influenced our daily lives. Nowadays people have been unable to imagine their life
without the Internet. Now people talk to each other over the Internet. The Internet is being used
in all spheres of our life. Therefore, new technologies are being used in educational process. It
creates great convenience for teachers in the class. Pupils also prefer modern teaching with using
the latest technology than traditional teaching.
When writing is taught in nontechnology environments teacher will explain any kind of
writing through the blackboard and students will observe and listen to the teacher’s explanation.
After then they will write their own writing on their paper. If every writing lesson is conducted
in this way, students will get bored, they will not want to write. Teaching writing through using
the last technology in the classroom brings a great interest to the children and the teacher should
play a role in ensuring that students do not get a moment’s attention from the teacher.
Writing in second language is a complex process of discovery. It involves brainstorming,
multiple drafting, feedback practices, revision and final editing. Writing also enhances the
language acquisition as students’ experiment with words, sentences and larger chunks of writing
to communicate their ideas effectively and to reinforce the grammar and vocabulary they are
learning in class.
If students are allowed to move away from a paper and pencil to ICT the use of ICT will
open new opportunities for students to learn writing skills as it changes traditional ways of
communication, improves the relationships between teachers and students, because students
know the technology well, using of ICT in the lessons attracts students’ attention to the learning
writing skills. Therefore, teachers should focus on creating and selecting activities or
assignments that students feel comfortable by using tools they know well. It enhances students’
ability to learn writing skills, expands their vocabulary and improves their grammar skills.
