Modal verbs play an important role in English grammar. They belong to the

category of auxiliary verbs and express the speaker's attitude toward an action or state.

Modal verbs are used to convey meanings such as possibility, permission, request,

obligation, and advice. Especially in communication, they help to express subtle

grammatical nuances clearly and accurately. Therefore, understanding and using them

correctly is essential for language learners. This article discusses the types, functions,

and grammatical rules related to modal verbs.

Modal verbs are an important grammatical category in the English language. They

do not express an action directly, but rather the speaker’s attitude toward the action.

The main modal verbs include: can, could, may, might, must, shall, should, will, would.

Each of these carries specific grammatical and semantic functions.

Modal verbs expressing possibility:

Verbs like may, might, could are used to express the likelihood of an event.

– It may rain tomorrow.

Modal verbs for permission and requests:

Can, may, could are used to ask for or give permission.

– May I come in?

– You can use my phone.

Modal verbs expressing obligation and necessity:

Must, have to, should express something that is necessary or required.

– You must wear a seatbelt.

Modal verbs for giving advice or suggestions:

Should, ought to are used to offer advice or suggestions.

– You should eat more vegetables.

Modal verbs for future intentions or desires:

Will, shall, would express future actions or polite offers.

– I will help you.

– Would you like some tea?

One of the key features of modal verbs is that they are followed by the base form

of the main verb (without “to”).

– She can dance. (Not: “can to dance”)

In addition, modal verbs generally do not change according to tense, meaning they

do not inflect. However, some have past forms: can → could, will → would, etc.

Correct usage of modal verbs helps to ensure clear and polite communication.

They are especially important when expressing thoughts, opinions, or intentions in

English.

Continuation ofModal verbs are widely used not only in everyday speech but also

in formal written texts. Especially in scientific articles, applications, official

permissions, contracts, and legal documents, the correct use of modal verbs is

considered essential. For example, the word "must" expresses legal obligation, whereas

"should" is used as a recommendation.

In addition, modal verbs are often used in forming conditional sentences:

– If you studied harder, you could pass the exam.

Here, "could" indicates a possible result based on a condition.

Modal verbs also have interrogative and negative forms:

– Can you help me? (Interrogative)

– You should not be late. (Negative)

Another important feature is that modal verbs form part of the predicate in a

sentence. They are never used alone but always accompany a main verb:

– He must go now. (Complete predicate)

While studying English grammar in depth, it is important to analyze each type of

modal verb separately and understand the meaning it conveys in context. A single

modal verb can have multiple meanings depending on the situation. For example, the

verb “can” can express both ability and permission:

– I can swim. (Ability)

– Can I ask a question? (Permission)

Therefore, it is not enough to simply memorize modal verbs — understanding and

using them correctly in context improves the learner’s grammatical competence and

overall language proficiency.

To learn modal verbs effectively, it is important to practice them in context. For

language learners, knowing the theoretical rules is not enough — they must also

practice using modal verbs correctly in real-life situations. This can be achieved

through dialogues, role-plays, text analysis, and written assignments.

For example, teacher-created speaking exercises:

– Can you lend me your book?

– Sorry, I can’t, I must use it today.

Such exercises teach not only the forms of modal verbs but also their

communicative functions in dialogue.

The comparative method is also effective in teaching modal verbs. By comparing

similar verbs such as must and have to, or can and be able to, students learn to

distinguish subtle differences in meaning depending on the context.

Moreover, using audio and video materials helps students hear how modal verbs

are used naturally in real speech. This improves listening skills and enhances practical

language proficiency.
