Artificial Intelligence (AI) is changing education in today's digital age , particularly
foreign language study. The traditional ways of learning a language, which consisted by
using textbooks or face-to-face interactions in schools or training institutions, are now
being transformed by technology based on AI. This paper investigates and analyses how
ChatGPT, Duolingo, ELSA Speak, and other AI-powered platforms provide a more
personalised language learning environment which is accessible, comfortable, and
effective in mediating the learning process.
Real-time feedback, adaptive learning paths, and immersive practice opportunities
are the key functions that AI tools offer to both learners and educators. Based on natural
language processing and speech recognition technology, these platforms can analyse user
input and provide tailor-made exercises. This article employs a comparative approach to
examine the practical aspects and limitations of such applications in enhancing second
language proficiency.
One of the key advantages of AI in language learning is personalisation. In
comparison, it differs from traditional learning approaches and adapts to the learner's level,
pace, and preferences. For example, ChatGPT can simulate honest conversations, offering
students an opportunity to practice spontaneous dialogue. Similarly, Duolingo's gamified
programs help support and motivate learners, while ELSA Speak focuses on improving
pronunciation by offering feedback that corrects the learner's mistakes. These tools provide

real-time feedback, adapt to users’ needs, and support a range of linguistic skills such as
pronunciation, fluency, and vocabulary development (Aljanabi, 2023; Wang & Vasquez,
2021).
The effectiveness of Duolingo lies in its approach, which utilises points and
rewards to motivate users effectively. The user-friendly interface and incorporation of
gamification elements help maintain engagement and create a sense of accomplishment.
Additionally, Duolingo employs spaced repetition techniques and regular updates to
enhance memory retention and continued engagement. It also adjusts the difficulty level,
providing feedback for error correction. Duolingo offers a learning experience by covering
reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills. However, some concerns revolve around
learning and the limited depth of language knowledge (A. Kodirov and D. Razikova,
2024). Nevertheless, the high user satisfaction indicates that Duolingo is accessible and
has an impact.
ChatGPT improves education by making it easier, more personalised, and more
effective for both students and teachers. It helps students with disabilities, translates for
non-native speakers, and gives them instant explanations, feedback, and tools to help them
study for tests. Teachers appreciate that it can create lesson plans and quizzes and provide
feedback from students. It also helps students develop good study habits and ensures that
the material is tailored to each person's learning style. However, concerns remain about
academic honesty, as students may rely too heavily on ChatGPT for homework, potentially
compromising their ability to think critically and be creative. The tool can provide false or
biased information, lacks expertise in niche topics, and struggles with context, humour, or
multitasking. Most importantly, it cannot replace the emotional intelligence and human
connection that teachers bring to the classroom. So, ChatGPT is a helpful tool, but it should
not replace traditional teaching methods; instead, it should complement them.
ELSA Speak's complex pronunciation recognition system, which offers real-time
feedback on speech, intonation, fluency, and stress in words, is one of its most described
features. This simplifies quick improvement in spoken English by enabling students to

recognise and correct their errors immediately. Users value being able to slow down the
audio for easier understanding and compare their speech to model pronunciations.
The significant level of personalisation offered by the app is an additional strength.
ELSA adapts to the unique goals, skill level, and pace of each learner. This covers a wide
range of topics, levels of difficulty, and even specialised material like Business English.
Many students emphasise how the app encourages daily learning habits and makes
language practice fun and inspiring with its gamified features and user-friendly progress
tracking. Furthermore, by simplifying complex pronunciation concepts, visual aids such
as mouth position videos and brief explanations further enhance the learning process.
Accessibility and adaptability are two more important advantages of the app. Since
students can study at any time and from any location, ELSA is particularly helpful for
individuals who are busy or lack access to native speakers. Its elegant appearance and
easy-to-use interface enhance the overall learning environment.
Even with all of its advantages, ELSA Speak has some disadvantages. Some users
express frustration and confusion due to the speech identification system's occasional
misidentification of proper pronunciation. These discrepancies can undermine confidence,
particularly when students are unclear whether the problem is with their speech or the
sensitivity of the software.
Transparency in billing and subscriptions is a more urgent issue. After the free trial
period ended, several users complained that they were charged for annual subscriptions
without being properly notified. Even though the app has a free version with respectable
functionality, the lack of clarity surrounding payment policies has led to unfavorable
reviews and mistrust, moreover, some learners express their displeasure with the app's
cost, claiming that the premium edition is rather pricey and wishing that more features
were available without charge.
Furthermore, artificial intelligence makes it possible to study at any time and,
anywhere and conveniently, which makes it as comfortable as possible for students with
different schedules or limited access to the traditional teaching method. The integration of

gamification and multimedia elements such as interactive tasks and audio and visual
effects further increases the interest and attracts the students' attention.
However, the development and implementation of AI in education also shows
negative features. Despite the ability to create the illusion that learners are talking and
learning from professionals, AI tools often lack emotional depth, cultural context, and
social cues, both in real-time and from the past. Language is not only about learning all
the words, filling in your vocabulary, and memorising all the grammar structures; it also
includes a conscious understanding of idioms, humour, intonation, and cultural and ethnic
nuances. It is difficult for AI to effectively convey all this, as representatives of the
traditional learning method do.
Another issue is data privacy, as almost all applications with artificial intelligence ask
for permission to use personal data about the user and this user data is used to improve
performance. The ethical use of personal data remains an important issue that requires
transparency in its use, specifically regarding the origin of the data and its safe handling.
In addition, excessive use of artificial intelligence can lead to dependence on it, which
contributes to further problems, such as a decline in interpersonal communication skills.
By not being able to have face-to-face conversations with native speakers or with people
who know more, students risk developing a passive understanding of the language, which
in turn will lead to students becoming closed and not liking contact with other people, or
in other words becoming "Introverts," which is bad for interaction in the real world. Ethical
concerns about data privacy and user consent in AI platforms, especially regarding
premium app subscriptions and automatic billing, have also been raised (Sampson, 2021).
In conclusion, artificial intelligence and many online platforms have changed the
learning of foreign and native languages by offering scalable, flexible, and adapted to
learner’s needs educational tools that can be tailored for every individual. Even if the new
technologies are powerful and promising, they should be considered as an addition to
traditional teaching methods, not as a substitute for it. A balanced approach combining
artificial intelligence learning with authentic communication and cultural immersion is
essential for complete language acquisition. This study highlights both the innovations and
