Language is not merely a means of communication; it serves as a crucial bridge for cultural

of evaluation and assessment are fundamental in shaping language competencies. This article
explores the definitions, purposes, methods, and implications of evaluation and assessment in
language education, emphasizing their significance in fostering effective learning experiences.
2. Understanding Evaluation and Assessment
While often used interchangeably, evaluation and assessment have distinct meanings in the context
of education.
- Assessment refers to the systematic process of measuring students' understanding and skills. It
can be formative (ongoing assessments aimed at improving learning) or summative (evaluations
at the end of an instructional unit).
- Evaluation, on the other hand, encompasses a broader process that involves making judgments
based on assessment data, considering educational objectives, and determining the effectiveness
of programs or instructional methods.
3. Purposes of Evaluation and Assessment in Language Education
1. Identifying Learner Needs: Assessments help identify the proficiency levels of learners,
