physical structure; it embodies a deep cultural
resonance that influences various forms of artistic
expression. Pasteboard, a versatile medium known for
its accessibility and adaptability, has seen a unique
transformation in artistic circles influenced by this
colossal figure. This study explores how the colossus
contributes to the creative process and the resultant
aesthetic outcomes in pasteboard art.
Historical and Cultural Context To understand the
serene impact of the colossus on pasteboard creations,
it is essential to examine the historical and cultural
significance of both the colossus and pasteboard as an
artistic medium. The colossus, often associated with
historical narratives and spiritual symbolism, provides
a backdrop of grandeur and historical depth.
Pasteboard, a material traditionally used for practical
purposes, has been repurposed by contemporary
artists to explore themes of tranquility and
monumentality inspired by the colossus.
The vibrant city of Yangon, formerly known as
Rangoon, is a melting pot of cultural influences and
historical significance. Among its many landmarks, one
structure stands out as a beacon of both heritage and
artistic inspiration: the Colossus of Yangon. This

The Colossus of Yangon: A Symbol of Serenity
The Colossus of Yangon, often referred to simply as
"the Colossus," is a towering statue that dominates the
city’s skyline. It is not just a symbol of Myanmar’s rich
history and religious devotion but also a testament to
the city’s resilience and cultural identity. The statue’s
serene expression and majestic stance convey a sense
of peace and tranquility that permeates its
surroundings. This peaceful aura is not lost on the
artists of Yangon, who find in it a profound source of
inspiration.
Pasteboard Art: A Unique Medium
Pasteboard, a material made from layers of paper or
cardboard, has been a staple in the art world for
centuries. Its versatility and accessibility make it an
ideal medium for artists looking to explore new forms
and techniques. In Yangon, pasteboard art has taken
on a unique significance. Artists use this medium to
create intricate sculptures, masks, and other
decorative items that reflect
the city’s cultural heritage
and contemporary life.
The Intersection of Art and Influence
The impact of the Colossus on pasteboard creations is
multifaceted. On a surface level, the statue’s imagery
and motifs often find their way into the designs and
themes of pasteboard art. More profoundly, however,
it is the sense of calm and contemplation that the
Colossus embodies that influences the artistic process.
Artists report feeling a deeper connection to their
work when drawing inspiration from the Colossus,
citing its serene presence as a catalyst for creativity
and introspection.
