THE HISTORY OF FOREIGN LANGUAGE TEACHING METHODOLOGY AND ITS
STAGE OF DEVELOPMENT
Abstract:
This article provides a brief overview of effective methods for teaching foreign
languages. It highlights key approaches that enhance language acquisition and communication
skills.
Keywords
:Audio-Lingual, Grammar-Translation Method, Direct Method, Communicative
Language Teaching (CLT), Task-Based Language Learning (TBLT).
Introduction.
Today, many people can speak two or more languages fluently. This raises the
question: how do they achieve this? Learning a new language used to be challenging, but now,
with various teaching methods available, the process has become more accessible. The key to
successful language learning is having a teacher who applies effective teaching methods. This
article explores the history, development, and characteristics of some of the most influential
language teaching methods.
Audio-Lingual Method
The Audio-Lingual Method is a teaching approach that emphasizes
grammar and pronunciation, particularly for speaking and listening. Rooted in behaviorism, it
relies on repetition and habit formation. This method was widely used in large-scale language
programs during the 1950s and 1960s. However, as cognitive learning theories developed, the
Audio-Lingual Method gradually declined in popularity and is now rarely used in modern
language instruction.
Grammar-Translation Method.
The Grammar-Translation Method focuses on learning
grammar rules and translating texts between languages. This method prioritizes reading and
writing over speaking and listening. As defined by the British Council, it involves presenting
grammar rules and vocabulary lists before having students translate written texts. However, it
lacks a communicative approach, making it less effective for developing conversational skills.
Direct Method
.The Direct Method emphasizes immersion in the target language, focusing on
speaking and listening skills. Students learn vocabulary and concepts through real-life objects,
pantomiming, and visual materials. Instead of explaining grammar explicitly, teachers guide
students to discover rules through contextual examples. Key features of this method include:
• Teaching through real-life objects and visual aids
• Encouraging learners to think directly in the target language
• Emphasizing spoken communication and native-like pronunciation

Communicative Language Teaching (CLT).
Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) is an
approach that focuses on using language in real-world situations. It encourages students to
practice meaningful communication rather than simply memorizing grammar rules.
How CLT works:
• Students engage in activities that promote real communication.
• Group work is encouraged to achieve common goals.
• Learners express opinions and participate in meaningful conversations.
• Teachers provide guiding questions and prompts to facilitate discussion.
Task-Based Language Teaching (TBLT).
Task-Based Language Teaching (TBLT) helps
students learn by completing real-life tasks in the target language. This method enhances
comprehension and language use in practical situations.
How TBLT works:
1. Pre-task: The teacher introduces the task and motivates students.
2. Task: Students complete the task using the language to achieve a goal.
3. Post-task: The teacher reviews the language used.
Examples of TBLT tasks:
• Writing a newsletter article
• Creating a presentation
• Acting out a skit

Conclusion.
Over time, different teaching methods have been developed to improve language
learning. While older methods like Grammar-Translation and Audio-Lingualism focused on
structure and repetition, modern approaches like CLT and TBLT prioritize communication and
real-world application. Choosing the right method depends on the learner’s goals and the
teaching context. By applying effective techniques, language learning can become an engaging
and successful process.
