Abstract
: Teaching languages to students, particularly non-native speakers, requires
proper strategies and methods. By doing this, each teacher has his/her difficulties. This
study intends to reveal the problems faced by teachers from non-native Englishspeaking
countries. This study answers the following questions: 1. What are the difficulties of
teaching English in non-native English -speaking countries. 2.Is there any effort to
overcome the difficulties? How do they overcome it? The result of study indicates some
main problems: learning materials which don’t cover students’ need, low motivation
and classroom condition is boring.

All people use language to express their feelings, ideas, opinions and desires. By the
language, people can communicate to each other. According to Brown language is a
system of arbitrary conventionalized, vocal, written, or gestural symbols that enable
members of given community to communicate intelligibly with one another. It means
that language is a communication. In other words, language is a kind of communication
between people in community. People can develop their knowledge with getting the
information. There are many kinds of language that are used to communicate. One of
them is English. English as International has to be learned by people in the world. But
Teaching English has been an important issue in countries where English is not their
first language, so learning second language is difficult for learners because they cannot
speak English in real situations, because they should learn sentence in textbooks not in
a real environment. Therefore, teachers should always look for useful strategies to
reduce the difficulties of teaching English language (1969; Chen, 2007; Nunn,

2011),and they have to deal with many challenges and often have question about the
best ways to teach. What people or children in the classroom or at home can hardly be
qualified as language spoken by natives? This is experience faced by students who learn
foreign language, mainly by books and have few or no interactions, when they are
thrown into real life situations which they must interact with natives. The difficulties
student encounter range from pronunciation differences, vocabulary differences
,through grammar and communication issues to cultural ones. The variation learners
experience is a broad as the spread of English and continue to change day by day.
Teaching English plays an important role in position and success as foreign language.
Students generally find only a small amount of English inside and outside the classroom
because English is not used for teaching the language in the classroom, or as a
communication tool during social interaction. This absence places great responsibility
on English teachers to ensure students learn English in a supportive environment, and
bring successful language learning into the classroom. Thus, the language knowledge
of teachers and teaching skills, along with a host other complex skills, is important in
teaching English as a foreign language (Burn and Richard, 1990).The researcher found
some problems and difficulties that often happen especially for the teachers in teaching
and learning process in the classroom. The first, the students did not understand what
the topic given by the teacher. The second, students lack of interested in learning
especially in speaking instruction of conversation and students pronunciation still low,
etc. In this case, English teachers in teaching English as a foreign language need a
creative way and select some good strategies that can help teachers and students to
presents their ideas in teaching learning process in the classroom. Bell (2007) suggested
that teachers need to be enlightened with all methods, and they should construct their
own principled methods or decide what principles they draw on their teaching. Teachers
cannot overlook the created methods and used by the teachers. Teachers need a
fundamental method to build their own teaching. According to Wardhaugh (1969),
students should be stimulated to use the English language and attempting to use the
innate process of language acquisition that they have.

Duties and Responsibilities of a teacher
The teacher with qualities mentioned above has a key role play while at school or at
home. The following are : a) To give knowledge and utilize potentials .A teacher has a
responsibility to offer knowledge according to the level of the learners. This take us
directly to the main responsibility of a teacher who is considered to source of
knowledge. In that case, presentation of the material important issues to be considered
by all teachers regardless of teaching modality used. b) To facilitate the teaching and
learning process. This is the most important step expected to be done by the teacher
before entering the class. The teacher is supposed to prepare, plan, and facilitate the
29
teaching and learning process. If a teacher is well prepared, she or he can also
teach effectively learning process has not been effective. c) A facilitator. A teacher is
a facilitator in the learning and teaching process. In the past the teacher was
considered the only source of knowledge, butnowadays to orientation is different.
Instead the teacher is not considered to be the only source of knowledge but rather a
facilitator in the learning process.
Lack of Interest and Motivation for Learning English
This factors is the most important obstacle in learning English. Most students are not
interested in learning the language and just think about passing the course, because they
are not interested. They don’t listen to their teacher and don’t learn anything, even if
they learn something they will forget it quickly, because they are tired of its repetition.
English teacher should encourage the students to learn the language by repeating. This
encouragement should not be verbalized, but some awards should be considered to
increase the motivation and interest in students.
The school can facilitate the teachers in developing material and strategies. So the
teachers can improve their strategies includs using the technique, methods and media
that will be implemented to the students.Teaching English is not easy, teachers need to
find appropriate strategies to teach students based on the problem. Teachers should be
patient tp grow up the students confidence and practice to talk English. It is also need
to the teacher to make the classroom atmosphere enjoyble. Teachers can play some

games to make the students enthusiasm in learning English. They also implement the
other technique that is interesting and also use the other media.
