Since linguistics aids in the explanation of English grammar to

students, it is essential in English teaching. Every language has a

set of grammatical rules that are taught in terms of syntax,

semantics, phonology, and morphology. Nevertheless, the study
of psychology, education, cognitive science, anthropology,

language acquisition, sociology, bilingualism, and fourth

language instruction should all be included in the teaching of

English. It's critical for teachers to know their students in order
to establish welcoming classroom environments. The instructor

should be able to put himself in the shoes of the pupils and show

them empathy and patience. The overall goal of teaching English

to pupils is to enable them to communicate effectively and
responsibly in both written and conversational modes.

INTRODUCTION

Language is a tool for intellectual and emotion communication. For everyone to live

and advance in life, language is essential. Some people are only able to communicate with
others in their native tongue. However, a lot of individuals work hard to pick up new
languages in an effort to succeed in life. English is one of the languages being selected
because of its strategic importance in global community.

The instructor must understand that the pupils are not empty vessels that may be

filled with information in order to accomplish this goal. In addition to serving as a coach,
mediator, or adviser, the instructor should provide the pupils the opportunity to try new
things, pose questions, and share their opinions. There are several skills and methods
involved in teaching English to speakers of other languages. It is required of an English
teacher to be familiar with the subject matter, the pupils, certain teaching techniques, and
general knowledge. To be a good role model for the kids, an English teacher also needs to
be highly motivated to execute his work.

Since English is perhaps the most widely used language in the world, millions of

individuals study it as a second or foreign language. In light of that, attempts have been
made to improve the effectiveness of English instruction.

All the way from elementary school to university, English is taught to students. It is

a topic that must be taken in order to enroll in higher education. Particularly for post-
graduate and graduate coursework. English is becoming more and more crucial in
international trade, business, and tourism. It's likely that we may say that English has taken
over as the global language. Many individuals worldwide are interested in learning English
in order to be successful in a variety of vocations, especially those requiring higher
education.

We must enhance the quality of English language instruction by better

understanding effective teaching strategies that are appropriate and useful for our

students, given the growing significance of English. It is imperative that we comprehend
the essence of language and the nature of language acquisition. Learning linguistics is
necessary if we are to comprehend the nature of language.

LITERATURE REVIEW

In order to assist teachers, in explaining English language concepts and structures

to their pupils, linguistics is essential in English language instruction. Ideas about the
structure and organization of language may be found in linguistics, and these ideas can be
used to improve teaching strategies. Applied linguistics can support educators in creating
a methodology built around a carefully graded grammatical and lexical syllabus with the
following features: the syllabus is organized according to graded vocabulary levels;
structures are meaningfully presented in context by using real-world examples to
contextualize concepts; and the order of classroom activities proceeds from presentation
to controlled practice. To more liberated output. The structural-situational approach is
another name for this [7. 45p].

As behaviorists claim. Learning a new conduct is the process of acquiring a second

language. The most crucial element of learning, which entails creating reactions to external
stimuli, is the environment. Positive reinforcement will help the replies stick in your
memory. The replies will be dropped if they are penalized. As a result, kids pick up a
language by habit formation. Through mimicking sounds and grammar patterns they hear
around them, students pick up new language skills. Studying a language is seen to be
comparable to studying any other subject. The process of learning involves adapting to
external inputs. A pupil must frequently mimic appropriate models in order to acquire a
second or foreign language [4. 34p].

The Audio-lingual approach, which is predicated on behaviorism

the idea that

holds that habit development is the basis for language acquisition

was made possible in

part by structural linguistics. According to Bloomfield [2. 12p], knowing a language is
overlearning, and learning something else is becoming pointless. This remark implies that
pupils should practice a pattern until they become proficient and able to do it on autopilot.

To achieve automatization, teaching methods make use of pattern practice and

dialog repetition. According to Rivers, audiolingualism is predicated on the ideas that
behavior may be taught by forcing students to behave, that habits are reinforced by
rewards, and that foreign language habits are established by providing the appropriate
answer. Learning is aided by correcting faulty imitations and providing positive feedback
for accurate imitations.

An essential component of the learning process is the active involvement of the

students. The best learning environments have a large number of reliable models and
continuous, instantaneous feedback. There should be plenty of examples in the target
language for students to see. Students should continuously mimic the target language
examples and gain constructive criticism. It is expected of an English instructor to have
knowledge of linguistics or applied linguistics in order to provide pupils with comments
and corrections.

METHODS AND DISCUSSION

Experts have proposed a plethora of approaches for teaching English as a second or

foreign language. They all have advantages and disadvantages. No single approach can
solve every issue with teaching English. Everything depends on the goals of teaching other
languages, such as English as a second language. Certain courses emphasize reading

proficiency, and in order to meet their objectives, they employ a variety of reading
strategies. Others could place more emphasis on speaking, so they might use dialogues and
discussions to help pupils practice speaking English until they can express themselves
well.

Titone notes that two basic occupied posts related to the instruction of English.

The first kind of instruction is form-focused, emphasizing the teaching of grammar rules,
structures, vocabulary growth, and language sounds. The second approach is meaning-
focused education, which places an emphasis on the appropriateness of phrases in various
contexts as well as language usage and communication fluency. Applied linguists
concentrate on the domains of psychology and linguistics to offer more effective teaching
strategies. According to Corder applied linguistics is the collection of linguistic applications
at different stages of the language instruction process.

However, we can undoubtedly agree that linguistics is inextricably linked to

language instruction worldwide. One example of this is how phonology helps teachers
identify the issues that pupils are having when speaking words correctly and then provide
feedback and correction. By familiarity with articulatory phonetics. Teachers of English
can help pupils with pronunciation issues. Teachers and students can better understand
words they are studying by learning and analyzing the process of word development
through morphology. For instance, they are able to deduce the meaning of words by
comprehending that words are made up of roots and affixes.

Teachers and students may learn and comprehend how words are put together to

form phrases, clauses, and sentences through syntax. Grammar, for example, permits the
movement of elements inside a phrase, e.g., you said what? Or what did you say? They will
therefore be able to form appropriate utterances or phrases. Semantics helps make
statements or sentences easier to understand. Furthermore, it is vital to comprehend the
social elements that impact a student's ability to learn or acquire English. Learning
happens when students engage in relationships with their peers and families.

CONCLUSION

English instructors have access to a wide variety of teaching strategies, but it's

important to choose the ones that work best for our classrooms. Our attention and
instruction must shift to the needs of the kids. The pupils' performance in relation to the
predetermined goals is what determines the success of our English instruction. English
instructors need to be receptive to new ideas, eager to learn new things, and driven to
improve their classroom performance. All relevant data and expertise must be used for
English instruction to be successful. English teachers need to be aware that their pupils
have varying learning styles and backgrounds. As a result, the instructor needs to offer a
variety of methods to help the pupils while they are teaching and learning. As linguistics is
the scientific study of language, it is a useful resource for English instructors to employ in
their classrooms. Every language has a structure that linguistic knowledge can explain. In
order for pupils to acquire effective language learning, English teachers must be able to
choose instructional resources such books, journals, audio-video tape recorders and
cassettes, self-access, and computerized language training [7. 230p].
