Abstract:
Dictionary semantics is one of the important areas for the
disciplines of linguistics and lexicography. The representation of word meanings
in dictionaries, their systematic development, and the opinions of various
scholars on this subject make a great contribution to the development of
lexicology. In this article, we will talk about how dictionary semantics is
developed, who has conducted what research in this area, and which scholars'
opinions are noteworthy.
Key words:
lexicography, systematic development, a system of signs,
language games, generative grammar, corpus linguistics.
Various scholars have conducted research on the semantics of dictionaries.
Below we provide information about some of the important researchers who are
well-known in this field and their approaches:
Ferdinand de Saussure – he analyzed language as a system of signs and
connected semantics with general linguistics. Ludwig Wittgenstein –
emphasized the dependence of word meanings on context and put forward the
theory of “language games”. Geoffrey Leech – explained semantics in terms of
different types of meaning (connotative, denotative). John Lyons – covered
semantics from a comprehensive theoretical perspective and emphasized the
importance of studying meaning relationships. Charles Fillmore – developed the
theory of frame semantics and explained the role of context in determining the
meaning systems of words.
Noam Chomsky – analyzed semantic aspects in the
theory of generative grammar, linking syntactic structures and semantic
relations. Ray Jackendoff – studied cognitive semantics and the influence of
conceptual structures in the human mind on language.
The following methodological approaches are used in creating a dictionary
of Uzbek political terms:
1. Collection of material based on corpus linguistics - Political texts,
speeches, legislative documents and mass media are analyzed.
2. Conceptual analysis of terms - Political concepts and their lexical
meanings are studied.
3. Identifying synonymy and antonymy relationships – Semantic
connections between political terms are identified.

4. Contextual analysis – How political terms are used in different texts is
studied.
5. Systematization of terms – Political processes, ideologies, and legal
concepts are classified.
6. Develop Definitions – A formal definition of each term is prepared.
7. Complete with Analytical Examples – Examples are provided to explain
how the terms are used in practice.
Several scholars have conducted scientific research on political terminology
in Uzbekistan. Below is information about some of the researchers who have
worked in this field:
1. Nizomiddin Mahmudov's "Brief Explanatory Dictionary of Socio-Political
Terms". The socio-political terms presented in the book are classified based on
several factors, and their semantic aspects are structured as follows:
• Definition of the term: Each term is explained separately, its meaning and
specific features are explained. This approach provides the basic information
necessary for a full understanding of terms in the socio-political sphere.
• Historical development: By showing how some terms have changed or
developed in their historical process, their semantic aspects in the present day
are revealed.
• Semantic field of the word: The meaning of each term and its relationship
to related words or expressions are analyzed. This helps to understand the
relationships between terms in the dictionary.
• Explanatory and concise explanation: Each term in the dictionary is given
with a brief explanation, but in some cases, more extensive explanations are
included. This allows the user to have a detailed understanding of the
terminology.
• Practical examples: Real-life practical examples are provided to further
clarify the understanding of some terms.
Mahmudov's dictionary, from the point of view of general semantics,
attempts to cover all aspects of the socio-political sphere in classifying terms.
This approach makes the dictionary useful both scientifically and practically,
since the reader not only learns the terms, but also understands their contextual
meaning.
2. Najibullo Hayriddin oglu Sayfullayev's article "The Concept and
Interpretation of Social and Political Terms". This article examines in detail the
precise and correct interpretation of political terms, the process of their

formation, and the specific aspects of political terms in the Uzbek language. The
article focuses on the following main aspects:
• Analysis of political terms. Sayfullaev interprets political terms from a
sociological and linguistic perspective. First of all, he tries to clarify the meaning
of each term by analyzing the relationships between terms and the semantic
complex of words. The use of political terms in a specific social stratum is
analyzed, as well as their content and purpose, and the socio-political conditions
in which they are formed.
• Creation and structure of political terms. Sayfullaev pays special attention
to the structure of political terms in the article. He studies the linguistic, social
and cultural foundations of the creation of political terms. The terminology of
the political sphere is often associated with changes in social life, new political
institutions, ideas and movements. Therefore, new terms and expressions are
created. They play a significant role, especially in covering international
relations, the political system, democracy, legal and economic issues.
Terms and their system. The article pays great attention to the
consideration of socio-political terms as a system and the analysis of their social
context. Sayfullaev emphasizes the clarity and consistency of this system of
terms, the creation of a model that shows the interconnection of terms and the
hierarchical relationships between them.
• Formation of political terms in the Uzbek language. The article discusses
the formation of political terms in the Uzbek language and the process of their
adaptation. Sayfullaev also analyzes the adaptation of political terms borrowed
from other languages to the Uzbek language and the difficulties that arise in
translating them. He discusses the specific semantic diversity of terms and the
formation of new terms based on the capabilities of the Uzbek language.
• Cultural and historical context of terms. The article also examines the
historical and cultural foundations of political terms. Sayfullaev shows how the
formation of terms and their role in social life depend on the political, economic
and cultural state of society. In this way, political terms are analyzed not only
scientifically, but also from a cultural and historical perspective.
• The practical importance of studying terms. The article also highlights the
practical importance of studying political terms and their correct use. Sayfullaev
shows the impact of scientific work in the field of political terminology on the
development of political thought, culture and the legal system in society.

Dictionary semantics plays an important role in the sciences of linguistics
and lexicography. Its development consists of various stages and requires
accuracy and systematicity. Many scientists have conducted research in this area
and various theories have been put forward. The use of these scientific views in
the creation of modern dictionaries serves to increase their quality and
usefulness to users. Dictionary semantics is also of great importance in the fields
of artificial intelligence and computational linguistics, and new research is
expected to be conducted in this area in the future.
