Speaking is an essential skill in language acquisition. It is often seen as the most practical and
interactive component of communication. Developing fluency in speaking helps learners express
themselves effectively, understand others, and engage in real-world conversations. However, speaking
is also the most anxiety-inducing skill for many learners, who may feel self-conscious or fear making
mistakes in front of others. These challenges are further complicated in foreign language classrooms
where opportunities for authentic speaking practice may be limited, and learners may lack real-world
exposure to the language.
This is where technology can play a transformative role. By providing learners with diverse tools
and platforms for practice, technology offers both individualized and collaborative speaking
opportunities that would not be possible in traditional classroom settings. The following sections
examine how technology can facilitate the development of speaking skills in various ways.[1;6]
Language Learning Apps and Platforms. One of the most widely used technological tools in
language learning today are mobile apps and online platforms specifically designed to help learners
practice speaking. Applications such as Duolingo, Babbel, Rosetta Stone, and HelloTalk provide
learners with a variety of exercises and activities to practice speaking in context. These platforms
often incorporate speech recognition technology to assess pronunciation and give immediate
feedback, allowing learners to improve their speaking accuracy and fluency in a low-pressure
environment.
For example, Duolingo uses gamification techniques to make speaking exercises more engaging
and interactive. The app allows users to repeat words and phrases, answer questions orally, and engage
in simulated conversations with the platform. This type of practice, while not a perfect substitute for
real human interaction, provides valuable opportunities for learners to engage with spoken language
regularly, which is crucial for long-term speaking development.
Similarly, HelloTalk connects learners with native speakers through text and voice messages. This
peer-to-peer communication tool allows users to practice speaking in real-life scenarios, which helps
develop fluency and confidence. By chatting with native speakers and receiving feedback on their
speech, learners can make corrections and adjust their speaking patterns to align with authentic usage.
Speech Recognition Technology. Speech recognition technology has become one of the most
important advancements in language learning. Programs like Google Assistant, Siri, and even
dedicated language learning apps leverage artificial intelligence to analyze and assess learners' spoken
input. These technologies help learners practice pronunciation, sentence stress, and intonation, and
they provide instant feedback, which can be incredibly beneficial in identifying areas for
improvement.
For example, Google Translate offers a speech-to-text feature that allows learners to speak into
the device and get immediate transcriptions of what they said. While the translation tool is often used
for written language, its speech recognition capabilities enable learners to practice their speaking in a
more interactive manner. Moreover, by comparing their pronunciation to the voice model, learners
can adjust their speaking habits accordingly.
In some advanced language learning tools, like Speechling and Rosetta Stone, speech recognition
provides feedback on accuracy by comparing learners’ speech to a reference model, giving them a

patterns, and dialects. Video calls also provide a richer experience compared to text-based
communication, as learners can pick up on non-verbal cues like div language and facial expressions,
which are key components of effective communication.

environments and video conferencing platforms, technology offers a wealth of resources to practice
speaking in dynamic and personalized ways. However, despite these advantages, it is important to
remember that technology should complement, not replace, traditional forms of interaction and

The Structured Observation of Learning Outcomes (SOLO) Taxonomy provides a
systematic framework for evaluating student learning. Initially developed by Biggs and Collis (1982),
the SOLO taxonomy categorises learning outcomes based on complexity. This article explores its
application in teaching speaking skills in language education, emphasising how its hierarchical
structure can scaffold speaking tasks, assess performance, and promote deeper learning.
Introduction. Speaking is a core component of language proficiency and a critical skill in
academic and real-world contexts. However, assessing and developing speaking abilities in a
structured manner remains challenging for many educators. The SOLO Taxonomy offers a potential
solution by providing a clear, progressive model of learning outcomes that can be aligned with
speaking tasks. This article investigates how the SOLO Taxonomy can be used effectively in planning,
teaching, and assessing speaking skills.
SOLO Taxonomy Overview
The SOLO Taxonomy categorizes learning into five levels:
1.
Prestructural: The learner shows little or no understanding.
2.
Unistructural: The learner focuses on one aspect of the task.
3.
Multistructural: The learner addresses several aspects, but without integration.
4.
Relational: The learner links ideas into a coherent whole.
5.
Extended Abstract: The learner goes beyond the given information to generalize and transfer
learning to new contexts.
These levels can be adapted to suit various skills, including speaking, by matching learning tasks and
assessment criteria to each stage.
Applying SOLO Taxonomy to Teaching Speaking

SOLO can guide the design of speaking tasks that gradually increase in cognitive and
communicative complexity:
