Abstract:

This article examines the symbolic and emotional aspects of color

names in language in a cultural context. Color expressions in Uzbek, English, and
Russian are analyzed, and their cultural meanings, emotional impact, and
pragmatic use are considered. The study reveals the linguistic and paralinguistic
properties of colors and highlights their importance in intercultural
communication. The results are important for linguistics, cultural studies, and
translation studies.

Key words:

color names, symbolism, emotional meaning, cultural context,

Uzbek language, pragmatics, intercultural communication, phraseology,
semantics, paralinguistics.

Introduction

Colors are an integral part of human experience, expressing not only visual

perception, but also cultural and emotional meanings. In addition to simple
lexical units, color names in language perform symbolic and pragmatic
functions. For example, in Uzbek, the word “oq” can mean purity and loyalty,
while “qara” can mean sadness or evil. The meanings of colors differ in different
cultures, which plays an important role in intercultural communication. This
study examines the cultural significance of color names by comparing their
symbolic and emotional aspects in Uzbek, English, and Russian.

Methods

The study uses a qualitative descriptive method. Data are drawn from

literature, folklore, the media, and everyday speech. Color names and related
phraseological expressions in Uzbek, English, and Russian are analyzed. Data are
categorized based on symbolic meaning (e.g., cultural associations), emotional
impact (e.g., positive or negative emotions), and contextual use. Comparative
analysis is used to identify differences and similarities between languages.

Results

The analysis identified the following main categories:
Symbolic meanings: In Uzbek, “oq” means purity and goodness, and “qizil”

means love or danger. In English, “blue” is associated with sadness, and in
Russian, “krasniy” is associated with beauty or revolution. These differences
depend on cultural history and social context.

Emotional impact: Color names intensify emotions in speech. For example,

the Uzbek phrase “sariq yuz” expresses illness or anxiety, while in English “green
with envy” expresses envy.

Phraseological use: Colors are often used in phraseological expressions,

reflecting cultural stereotypes (for example, “belaya vorona” in Russian means a
special person).

Paralinguistic elements: In speech, color names, together with tone,

gestures, and facial expressions, deepen the emotional meaning.

The results show that cultural knowledge and contextual sensitivity are

necessary to understand color names.

Discussion

Color names clearly demonstrate the interdependence of language and

culture. Their symbolic and emotional meanings are important for successful
intercultural communication. For example, the word “green” in Uzbek is
associated with nature and hope, while in other cultures this color may have
different meanings. This creates a challenge for translators, teachers, and
participants in international communication. In digital communication (e.g.,
emoji and graphic design), the symbolic meanings of colors are manifested in
new forms, requiring a rethinking of linguistic theories.

Conclusion

Color names are an important means of expressing symbolic and emotional

meanings in language. Their correct interpretation depends on linguistic and
cultural competence. In the future, an important direction will be to study the
role of colors in virtual communication and their interpretation by artificial
intelligence. This study will create a basis for further research in the field of
linguistics and intercultural communication.
