Introduction
Radon is an invisible and odorless radioactive gas that emerges naturally
from the breakdown of uranium found in soil, rock, and groundwater. As it
migrates upward through the earth, radon can infiltrate residential buildings
through unsealed floors, wall joints, or utility gaps. Prolonged indoor exposure
to elevated radon levels is a well-documented cause of lung cancer, particularly
among individuals who have never smoked.
Despite its classification as a serious environmental health hazard by global
organizations like the WHO and IARC, radon remains a largely underrecognized
issue in Uzbekistan. In the capital city of Tashkent, where urban density and
diverse building types prevail, public understanding of radon risks remains
limited. Most citizens are unfamiliar with radon testing techniques or prevention
strategies, and public health outreach on the topic is minimal.
This study aims to investigate the current state of public knowledge and
risk perception regarding radon in Tashkent. It also seeks to develop targeted,
culturally relevant communication tools and engagement strategies that can
inform and mobilize communities to reduce their exposure.
Main Body
The study will utilize a combination of field surveys, focus groups, and
policy analysis to explore how radon risk is perceived and addressed by urban
residents. A stratified random sample of neighborhoods will be selected to
include both older residential zones and newly constructed housing, ensuring
diverse representation.
The household survey will assess public familiarity with radon, attitudes
toward home air quality, testing behaviors, and the use (or lack) of mitigation
techniques. Additionally, participants will be asked about their primary sources
of health information and trust in government or media communication.
Qualitative interviews will be conducted with public health officials,
environmental experts, and local community leaders to identify institutional
challenges and barriers to effective radon risk communication. These interviews

will help determine whether existing health campaigns include environmental
radiation topics and how they are perceived by the public.
To strengthen the analysis, the study will benchmark findings against
international case studies from countries with effective public radon education
programs (e.g., Canada, Sweden, and the Czech Republic). Factors such as
community engagement tactics, integration of radon awareness into housing
regulations, and school-based education will be evaluated for potential
adaptation in Uzbekistan.
Based on this analysis, the study will propose a multi-channel community
outreach framework. This may include public workshops, printed materials,
social media messaging, and school curriculum additions. Special emphasis will
be placed on leveraging healthcare institutions and local government offices as
trusted messengers to ensure wide dissemination of information and encourage
household-level action.
Conclusion
Addressing the low level of radon awareness and prevention in Tashkent is a
vital step toward improving long-term public health. This research highlights the
urgency of building an informed public and offers actionable strategies for
community outreach, policy improvement, and risk communication.
By empowering residents with knowledge and tools, the study aims to shift
radon mitigation from a technical concern to a community priority. In doing so,
it contributes to the broader goal of creating safer, healthier living environments
across urban Uzbekistan.
