Title: Is it possible to overcome barriers in the sphere of learning and teaching one
particular language?
Language is very important means of communication that’s why it is rather difficult to
think of a society without language. It also sharpens people’s thoughts and guides,
controls their entire activity. In the case of mother tongue, the child can learn it easily due
to the favorable environment around him. However, when it comes to a second language,
it requires conscious efforts and everydiv can face with some problems during learning.
It is mainly because of some reasons such as teacher’s lack proficiency,
misunderstandings among students and not being aware of doing self-study. In the
following, a number of solutions can be provided which should be implemented to deal
with these problems.
Firstly, the main obstacle is related to teacher’s knowledge. It is said that around the globe
70% of the teachers do not seem to have quite good English proficiency as they
mispronounce some words or do not have more lexical resource. For example, some
teachers who are teaching 6 or 7 grades may have a hardship in the pronunciation of [th].
Likewise, high grade teachers even do not know the meaning of words in the materials.
In order to solve this problem, the government should pay more attention the education
of teachers. To illustrate, while they are studying at university, only English environment
should be created by requiring speaking in English or bringing native professors from
abroad. In addition, before they are hired for the job vacancies, they have to take some
exams which can show their level in this language. According to our country, our
President Shavkat Mirziyoyev has put this dilemma on the high agenda. In 2021 he
56
executed a new law which is about English teachers’ skills. That is to say, teachers, who
do not have any international or national certificate, their salary will be lowered or they
will be excluded from their job. I believe that by implementing such kind of laws, teachers
can be stimulated to work harder to become skillful and to educate students more better.
Secondly, as a scientist Obal Dunn, who is from Great Britain, wrote in his book called
“Beginning English with young children” there are some misunderstandings amongst
students that English is the most difficult subject to learn. It means that English learning
process is not appealing for some students that may result in lack of motivation. From my
point of view, teachers play crucial roles to make pupils more interested by using different
methods or games. Although using several games in teaching, the most desirable teaching
technique to young leaders, the teacher tends to use conventional media as the teaching
aids. Meanwhile, the students are born in advanced technology era, so most of them are
more encouraged when the materials are delivered using multimedia such as animated
pictures or videos. Additionally, if students are not satisfied with their results, they may
lose hope or dismotivated to study. In these cases, teachers should arrange motivational
speeches or motivational activities which can help them to keep their track to learn.
Another obvious problem is students’ dependency on teachers. In the research which was
done by Hour Vannak he said that students became overly dependent on teachers, and
during the lessons some of them always asked direct answers for exercises or if they were
not satisfied with their results, they would try to change their learning places instead of
working hard on weak skills. In order to make students self-learners, “Kunon” method (
a type of individualised learning method that allows each student to do at the just right
level, regardless of age or school grade) is suggested. Furthermore, students also should
be forced to do tasks independently by giving some researches or projects. I believe that
by doing such kind of projects students can boost their confidence and also enhance their
knowledge.
All in all, learning a second language is not very easy as we hope. Because it requires us
hard work, long period of time and patience. In spite of many difficulties, teaching and
57
learning English as a second language will be very fun and very helpful to expand our
horizons if we do it in the right way. According to the problems which were discussed
above, if we follow some techniques in learning a new language, we will not encounter
some barriers.
