Introduction
One of the most significant factors defining the national identity of a people
is their language. The Karakalpak language belongs to the Turkic language
family and is characterized as an agglutinative language. In linguistic studies,
special attention is given to its morphological structure, grammatical rules, and
especially the system of word formation through suffixation. This system brings
Karakalpak linguistically closer to Uzbek, Kazakh, and other Turkic languages in
terms of phonetic and morphological features.
In agglutinative languages, each morpheme—whether root or suffix—has a
clearly defined function. Phonetic changes during word formation are minimal,
while affixes carry a significant semantic load. These characteristics are
particularly prominent in the Karakalpak language.
Research Objective
: To comprehensively explore the agglutinative
features of the Karakalpak language, its scientific classification, and models of
word formation through suffixes using both examples and theoretical analysis.
Keywords
: Karakalpak language, agglutination, suffix, morpheme, word
formation, Turkic languages, model.
II. Theory of Agglutination: Scientific Classification and the Position of
the Karakalpak Language in World Linguistics
Morphologically, the Karakalpak language is categorized as an agglutinative
language. The term
agglutination
(from Latin
agglutinare
, meaning “to glue”) in
linguistics refers to a language type in which grammatical and lexical meanings
are expressed through the sequential addition of affixes (mainly suffixes) to a
word root.
The key features of the Karakalpak agglutinative system include:
Each affix added serves a specific grammatical or lexical function,
and the root remains unchanged;
Affixes follow a strict, predictable order;
Each suffix retains its independent meaning;
Phonetic changes in the root during affixation are minimal.

The Karakalpak language, along with other Turkic languages, has been
recognized as a classical representative of the agglutinative language type, as
noted by scholars such as W. von Humboldt, A. Samoylovich, and others.
The scientific classification of agglutination in Karakalpak highlights its high
capacity for generating new words and grammatical forms—an essential aspect
in the development of its lexical-semantic system.
III. Word Formation Through Suffixes in the Karakalpak Language
Suffixation is a core and most characteristic feature of the agglutinative
structure of the Karakalpak language. New words are formed by adding one or
more suffixes to a root, acquiring new grammatical or lexical meanings.
Types of suffixes
:
Grammatical suffixes
: indicate categories such as number, person,
tense, possession, and others;
Lexical suffixes
: form new lexemes with altered or entirely new
meanings.
Examples
:
ақ
-лық
ақлық
билим
-ли
билимли
жыл
-лар
жыллар
жаз
-ыў шы
жазыў шы
қыл
-ма
қылма
аралас
-тыр
араластыр
дос
-лық
дослық
қыз
-алақ
қызалақ
Many suffixes are homonymous and appear in variant forms depending on
the phonological properties of the root (e.g., -лық / -лик).
Models of word formation
:
Unidirectional agglutination
: adding a single suffix (ақ → ақлық);
Multilevel agglutination
: sequential addition of multiple suffixes
(билим + ли + лер + ди);
Compounding
: creating new words from two or more roots
(тилеклес — like-minded person).
IV. Existing Models and Lexico-Grammatical Features
1.
Affixation
This is the primary method of word formation, where suffixes create new lexical
and grammatical forms:
билим + ли → билимли (knowledgeable)
жаз + ыўшы → жазыўшы (writer)
дос + лық → дослық (friendship)
ел + лер → еллер (nations),

китаб + ым → китабым (my book)
2.
Compounding
Combining two or more roots to form new meaningful units:
китапхана (library), тилеклес (like-minded)
3.
Phonetic-Change-Based
Models
Roots may undergo phonetic changes during suffixation:
ақ + -лық → ақлық
қоры + қ + -шы → қорықшы (guard)
4.
Lexico-Grammatical
Functional
Models
These express relations such as inclusion, contrast, or modality:
таң + лаў → таңлаў (to select)
садық + лық → садықлық (fidelity)
жоқ + сыз → жоқсыз (without…)
5.
Homonymy
and
Variant
Forms
Some suffixes have multiple forms and functions:
-шы: сўўшы (hydrologist), оқытыўшы (instructor)
6.
Closed
and
Productive
Models
These form self-contained grammatical structures:
билим + ли + лер + де → билимлилерде (among the
knowledgeable)
аралас + тыр + ыл + ған → араластырылған (mixed)
қыз + алақ + лар → қызалақлар (little girls)
V. Conclusion
The agglutinative structure of the Karakalpak language forms the
foundation of its morphological and grammatical systems. Word formation
through suffixation contributes to the language's lexical richness, flexibility, and
adaptability. The diversity of affixes and their functions affirms the importance
of the Karakalpak language both among the Turkic languages and in the broader
typological framework of world linguistics.
The mechanical transparency of the word formation process, the
preservation of the root, and the explicit conveyance of meaning through affixes
make Karakalpak a clear example of the agglutinative model. The existing forms
of affixation, compounding, phonological adaptation, lexico-grammatical
structures, and variant formations contribute to its structurally dense and
functionally rich linguistic profile.
From both theoretical and practical perspectives, a deep understanding of
these features can inform the development of effective teaching methodologies,
the implementation of innovative pedagogical technologies, and the
enhancement of linguistic competence and motivation among learners studying
the Karakalpak language.
