Авторы анализируют значения, происхождение и культурные атрибуты термина «богатство», как он представлен в паремиологических единицах. Цель исследования — исследовать, как концепция богатства воспринимается, оценивается и критикуется в английской языковой традиции. Особое внимание уделяется культурным отношениям к богатству, включая стремление, скептицизм и моральные предостережения, что позволяет осветить сложные взаимосвязи между языком и социальными нормами.

This article focuses on the study of proverbs, sayings and

idiomatic expressions in English that reflect a wide range of
cultural values, beliefs and social standards related to the topic
of wealth. The authors analyze the meanings, origins and

cultural attributes of the term "wealth" as it is represented in
paremiological units. The purpose of the study is to explore how

the concept of wealth is perceived, valued and criticized in the
English linguistic tradition. Particular attention is paid to
cultural attitudes toward wealth, including aspiration,

skepticism, and moral caution, to illuminate the complex
relationships between language and social norms.

Эта статья фокусируется на изучении пословиц,

поговорок и идиоматических выражений на английском

языке, которые отражают широкий спектр культурных

ценностей,

убеждений

и

социальных

стандартов,

связанных с темой богатства. Авторы анализируют

значения, происхождение и культурные атрибуты термина

«богатство», как он представлен в паремиологических

единицах. Цель исследования –

исследовать, как концепция

богатства воспринимается, оценивается и критикуется в

английской языковой традиции. Особое внимание

уделяется культурным отношениям к богатству, включая

стремление, скептицизм и моральные предостережения,

что позволяет осветить сложные взаимосвязи между

языком и социальными нормами.

INTRODUCTION

Paremiology, or the study of proverbs, is the study of well-known sayings that

include moral teachings, truths, and conventional wisdom. These statements serve as a

precise and frequently symbolic source of common knowledge and cultural ideals about

human experiences. Idioms and proverbs provide a complex picture of financial

prosperity in the context of riches, reflecting moral, cultural, and historical perspectives.

This research study examines the idea of wealth as it is portrayed in English idioms and

proverbs, emphasizing the interaction between language and cultural norms. It is

anticipated to obtain a greater comprehension of the ways in which English-speaking

cultures view, criticize, and moralize wealth.

MATERIALS

The research uses many sources to gather and examine proverbs and idiomatic

idioms relating to wealth. The sources of information were Thomas Preston's

publications "A Dictionary of English Proverbs and Proverbial Phrases" and "The Oxford

Dictionary of Proverbs." In order to comprehend the notion of wealth better, an analysis

of Martin H. Manser's "The Facts on File Dictionary of Proverbs" has also been conducted.

The development of the research also benefited from papers like "Proverbs:

A Handbook," "The Nature of Proverbs," and "Proverbial Language in English Drama" by

Wolfgang Mieder. The terms "wealth" were quickly understood by using the internet

databases "Bartlett's Familiar Quotations" and "Oxford References Online."

METHODS

The research methodology process consists of many stages. First, a compilation of

proverbs and idioms about wealth was prepared. Selected books, journals, and internet

databases were used to gather these phrases. Second, the gathered expressions have

been categorized into themes that represent various perspectives on wealth. After that,

to comprehend the development and growth of these expressions, an examination of

their historical roots and socioeconomic environments was conducted. In order to

understand the cultural values and societal norms represented in these utterances, a

cultural analysis has also been conducted.

DISCUSSION

Proverbs Concerning Wealth: Their Historical Context

.

Proverbs concerning wealth have a long history and frequently capture the

socioeconomic climate of the eras in which they were coined. For example, several
statements regarding wealth and labor emerged from the economic shifts brought about

by the Industrial Revolution. Sayings like "A penny saved is a penny earned" and other
proverbs emphasize hard effort and thrift, reflecting the Puritan work ethic of the time.

[7, p. 23] Proverbs like "Make hay while the sun shines," which emphasize the value of
timely labor in reaping rewards, are also a legacy of the agrarian history of English-

speaking countries. These proverbs are related to land ownership and agricultural
abundance as indications of affluence. [14, p. 12]

Proverbs that reflect positive views about wealth.

It must be acknowledged that several proverbs emphasize the good aspects of

wealth and its attributes. These statements frequently emphasize the advantages of
financial prosperity from a practical standpoint as well as the ethical benefits of

accumulating and handling wealth. As an illustration, ‘A penny saved is a penny earned’,

this proverb, which is frequently credited to Benjamin Franklin, emphasizes the value of

thrift and saving as means of building wealth. The labor ethic of the Puritans, who
emphasized diligence, frugal living, and self-control, is evident in it. This proverb's

historical setting is early American civilization, when success and survival depended
heavily on individualism and sound money management [8, p. 3].

The proverb ‘Money makes the mare go’ also emphasizes how useful money is for

enabling activities and accomplishing objectives. It emphasizes the useful benefits of

money and implies that financial resources are necessary for completing tasks. This
saying illustrates a practical perspective on wealth as a tool, acknowledging its

usefulness in supporting a range of pursuits [9, p. 13].

The proverb ‘Wealth makes many friends’ highlights the positive social effects of

wealth, implying that having money can attract friends and allies. It conveys a practical
understanding of wealth as a tool for growing one's social circle and power. This phrase

has historically highlighted the significance of wealth in social dynamics since material
riches are frequently converted into social capital and influence [7, p. 32].

Proverbs reflecting cautious views about wealth.

Some proverbs take a more sobering stance, alerting readers to the possible dangers

and ethical dilemmas that come with wealth. These statements reveal a moralistic
viewpoint that places a higher value on moral standards and integrity than on financial

gain.

For example, the proverb ‘The love of money is the root of all evil’ cautions against

moral degradation and immoral behavior caused by an overwhelming desire for money.

It conveys a moralistic viewpoint that places a higher priority on spiritual principles than
monetary possessions. This proverb's historical background is found in religious teachings

that stress the need of living a moral life and the perils of greed [13, p. 8].

Additionally, the proverb ‘Money can’t buy happiness’, a well

-known proverb,

questions the idea that material prosperity translates into personal contentment.
It implies that relationships, accomplishments, inner serenity, and other non-material

things are the sources of genuine pleasure. This proverb's rejection of materialism and
support for a well-rounded, holistic way of living give it cultural value [3, p. 10]

Furthermore, the saying ‘Easy come, easy go’, warns against acquiring riches rapidly

as it will probably be lost equally swiftly. It highlights the need of diligence and tenacity in
obtaining long-term financial security. This expression's historical background, which

emphasizes the transient nature of such prosperity, may be traced to periods of financial
gain and economic speculation [6, p. 15].

Proverbs That Express Ambiguity or Neutrality Toward Wealth.

While acknowledging the complexity of money and the various ways it may affect

people's lives, some proverbs take a more objective or ambiguous stance toward it [10, p. 13].
These statements reveal a sophisticated perspective on the function of wealth in society. For

instance, the proverb ‘The rich get richer and the poor get poorer’ conveys a critical

perspective on the self-reinforcing nature of wealth increase as well as economic inequality [5,

p. 9]. It implies that current wealth gaps may increase over time, frequently as a result of
structural issues. Socioeconomic criticisms of capitalism and the institutional impediments to

fair wealth distribution provide the basis of this expression's historical backdrop [1, p. 12].

Moreover, the proverb ‘A fool and his money are soon parted’ emphasizes the value of

sound financial judgment as well as the risks associated with careless expenditure. It suggests
that material prosperity is ephemeral without wisdom and insight. This proverb's cultural

relevance stems from its promotion of financial literacy and responsible resource

management [2, p. 44]. While the proverb ‘Money talks’ recognizes the cultural and political

situations in which wealth has significant power and influence. It indicates that material
prosperity may influence choices and demand attention, emphasizing the practical effects of

wealth. This expression's historical background can be linked to times of economic power and
political lobbying, when decisions were mostly determined by the impact of money [15, p. 2].

CONCLUSION

In conclusion, it must be elucidated that examining English language wealth-related

paremiological units provides a variety of cultural information. Proverbs and colloquial
phrases provide insights into historical settings, moral perspectives on wealth, and societal

ideals. Underlying cultural attitudes regarding wealth are revealed by the analysis, which
include skepticism, moral caution, ambition, and adoration. Proverbs that highlight diligence,

thrift, and the useful advantages of riches present a favorable image of financial success.
On the other hand, warning proverbs advise against the moral pitfalls and conundrums that

come with pursuing financial success. Proverbs that are ambiguous or neutral draw
attention to the richness and complexity of wealth, acknowledging its potency and impact on

social dynamics. These displays will surely change as society does, reflecting changing beliefs
and perspectives on wealth and its significance in human existence.
