Abstract

The article explores how animation interprets and visualizes the symbolism embedded in the folk tales of the Brothers Grimm. It examines how elements of fairy tales — such as forests, magical objects, and characters —are transformed into visual images that enhance their metaphorical meaning.

The article also analyzes examples of successful animated adaptations of fairy tales, such as animated series and films, in which the symbolism of these works is revealed through the color palette, form and composition. In conclusion, the role of animation in preserving and transmitting the cultural values embedded in the works of the Brothers Grimm to new generations of viewers is emphasized.

INTRODUCTION

Animation provides creators with a unique freedom to emdiv the symbols and moods

inherent in fairy tales. Using colors, shapes, composition, light and shadow, animation studios

create worlds that enhance the metaphorical meaning of fairy tale elements.

Animated series and films based on the fairy tales of the Brothers Grimm play an

important role in preserving and transforming the cultural values conveyed by these works.

Animation allows you to reveal a variety of characters and themes that were embedded in fairy

tales. It also helps to make these stories accessible to a wider audience, including children and

adults, by providing space for meaningful interpretations.

The visualization of symbols in animation also contributes to their preservation and

transmission to new generations. Thanks to animation, the symbolism of the Grimm brothers'

fairy tales continues to live and evolve, overcoming time and cultural barriers, and remaining

relevant even in our rapidly changing world.

The brothers Grimm, Jacob and Wilhelm, left a deep mark on world culture by

collecting and recording countless German folk tales. Their work had a huge impact on the

development of literature, art, and animation, where the fairy tales of the Brothers Grimm

became important symbols and sources for creating vivid images. The symbolic images

embedded in their works often take on new forms in animation, preserving deep meanings and at

the same time adapting to modern audience demands.

THE MAIN PART

Fairy tales by the brothers Grimm, such as "Cinderella", "Little Red Riding Hood",

"Hansel and Gretel", "Snow White" and others, not only tell fascinating stories, but also carry a

multi-layered symbolism. Every element of these stories — be it the forest, old houses, wild

animals or magical objects — can be interpreted through the prism of archetypes and

mythological images.

For example, the forest in the Grimm brothers' fairy tales often symbolizes not only

dangers and trials, but also the inner metamorphoses of the characters. In the forest, the heroes

face darkness and chaos in order to reach a new level of understanding of the world and

themselves. The visualization of this symbol in animation allows viewers not only to see, but

also to feel the atmosphere of danger and transformation.

Grimm's fairy tales are filled with pronounced opposites: good and evil, light and dark,

poverty and wealth. These contrasts are easy to visualize in animation through the difference in

color shades and the sharpness of the lines. For example, the dark, menacing shadows of the

figures of evil characters in Cinderella or Snow White emphasize their sinister nature, while light,

soft lines and warm colors, on the contrary, create the image of kind and naive characters.

In animation, magical elements such as spells, magic mirrors, or transformations often

become the main visual focuses that enhance the symbolism of a fairy tale. Cinderella's

transformation into a princess or the magical power bestowed by kind characters becomes a

vivid visual moment that highlights the importance of faith in goodness and help that transforms

the world around you.

The animated film "Snow White" (for example, the 1937 Disney work) is a classic

example of using color and shape to visualize characters. Snow White herself, in the

interpretation of animation, becomes a symbol of innocence, purity and beauty, while the evil

stepmother with her mirror represents the destructive force of envy and vanity. The world around

Snow White is filled with bright colors and soft lines, which enhances her good-natured

character, while the stepmother's world is dark, with sharp contrasts.

The mythological and archetypal nature of the images.

The Grimm brothers' fairy

tales are full of archetypal images that have universal meaning and are deeply rooted in the

collective unconscious. These archetypes have also passed into animation art, where the

characters of the brothers Grimm acquire symbolic meaning, reflecting the eternal themes of the

struggle between good and evil, overcoming obstacles and rebirth.

An example is the image of Cinderella, which in various animated interpretations

becomes a symbol of hope, fortitude and self-confidence, despite difficulties. In the 1950 Disney

animated film Cinderella, the image of the heroine, burdened with difficulties but capable of

transformation and overcoming, becomes the embodiment of hope and inner strength.

Motifs of magic and fantasy.

Many of the works of the Brothers Grimm are

characterized by a deep element of magic, often with dark shades. Magical creatures, witches,

transformations and spells become symbols of the characters' inner struggle, their psycho-

emotional changes. In animation, such images often acquire more vivid and expressive features,

enhancing the visual perception of the audience.

For example, in animated films such as Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937), we

see how evil witches or witches, symbolizing dark forces, become not just antagonists, but also

the personification of destructive emotions such as envy and pride. And good fairies, on the

contrary, act as symbols of love, care and hope.

The symbolism of animals and mythological creatures.

Animals in Grimm's fairy

tales play a key role, often they are not just part of the plot, but also deep symbols. In animation,

such animals often acquired special significance, becoming not only companions of the

characters, but also the embodiment of certain qualities. For example, in the fairy tale "Little Red

Riding Hood" the wolf is a symbol of threat and evil, but in animated interpretations the wolf

often acquires a more complex and meaningful character.

In addition, mythological creatures such as dragons, witches, and other magical

characters are also often found in animation, where they symbolize the struggle against tyranny

or oppression. These images become an important symbol of fear, strength, and resistance.

CONCLUSION

The fairy tales of the Brothers Grimm are an inexhaustible source of symbols and

archetypes that find their place in animation. Through the visualization of these symbols in

cartoons, it is possible to reveal the depth of folk wisdom, as well as create new ways of

perceiving these ancient stories. Animation becomes the means through which myths and

symbols of fairy tales continue to live, develop and penetrate into the consciousness of viewers,

strengthening cultural identity and offering relevant moral lessons for new generations.
