ABSTRACT
This article is committed to the consider of plausibility of conditional sentences to perform a few discourse exercises
in a certain communicative setting. In specific, it considers the issue of conditional connections from the perspective
of pragmatics, in specific, their potential to carry out a few discourse acts. The purpose of the research is to discover
how conditional sentences are used in English to achieve specific goals while speaking.
KEYWORDS
Condition, conditional sentence, pragmatics, context, communication, conversation, semantics, speech act.
INTRODUCTION
The usual belief is that there is always a practical reason
for how sentence meaning can determine what the
speaker means in any situation. The assumption is that
when we use certain words or phrases in different
ways, it's not because they have multiple meanings,
but because we have additional information that helps
us understand their intended meaning. In this study,
the term pragmatics is not used broadly to include all
aspects of how people use language, such as social
psychology, sociolinguistics, cultural anthropology,
and rhetoric. The conversation is only about things that
have to do with how people communicate, especially
when it comes to the effects of communication.
Many people argue that the idea of context is often
used to explain how pragmatics works together with
semantics. It is commonly known that the meaning of
a sentence usually does not exactly match what is
actually said when we speak, and the difference is filled
by something called context. The concept of platitude
means that someone can say one thing, but it might
actually have multiple meanings, even if they are being
completely straightforward with their words. The truth

is that the way someone speaks can be understood
differently depending on the situation. Bach and
Harnish have also said that what someone means when
they say words can change. Therefore, what makes
what someone says correct is not just the words
themselves, but also the situation in which they are
being used. These facts are the background
information for what is being said. There are basically
two types of contextual information. One is more
limited and has a smaller role compared to the other.
Information that combines with words to determine
meaning is limited to a small number of things, like who
is listening and when and where something is said.
Pragmatic information is about the facts that help us
understand what someone means when they say
something. The listener tries to understand what the
speaker meant when they said something. In simpler
terms, the listener wants to understand why the
speaker said what they said and how they said it.
Because people communicate to be understood, the
listener assumes that the speaker wants them to
understand their message. The speaker is successful in
getting their message across if the listener
understands what they meant because communicative
intentions are only fulfilled when they are recognized.
Pragmatics is all about the extra information that is
important for understanding what a sentence means,
beyond just the words in the sentence. Based on what
was said before, this text talks about the practical uses
of conditionals. It uses a practical approach based on
the Speech Act Model.
The Speech Act Theory categorizes sentences based
on their purpose, not their structure. This is why it is
better to classify conditionals in this way because it
helps the interpreter understand what the speaker
meant. When we look at conditionals in the speech act
model, we see that they are like actions hidden in the
words. They are not just stating a condition, but also
trying to convince or manipulate the listener, make a
strong statement, ask politely, justify oneself, mock
someone, or express sadness and many other things.
Let’s analyze the following exa
mples:
Context: "Well, I don't really like ballet very much. If
you want to go to the ballet in the evening, let's do
something in the morning," says Christine.
Context: "That sounds great! If I don't call you on
Friday, send me an email at work," agrees Christine.
"And if I don't answer, call me again. And if I don't pick
up oh, let's just make plans now! I'm too busy to plan
later!"
In the examples above, we can see how conditional
statements can imply giving permission in a specific
situation. Please know that the examples use different
ways to give permission. Understanding the function
of conditional constructions depends on the social
situation.
