Abstract

The results of a quantitative investigation on how incorporating TED Talks media into language training affects students' speaking abilities are presented in this article. The purpose of the study was to evaluate how well students' verbal expression and communication skills may be improved by using TED Talks videos as a resource.  After incorporating TED Talks, students' speaking abilities significantly improved, according to an examination of pre- and post-test results. The integration of genuine and captivating information from TED Talks introduced students to a diverse range of subjects, accomplished presenters, and everyday language usage, resulting in improved pronunciation, vocabulary, and fluency.

These findings highlight the TED Talks' potential as a useful educational resource for enhancing students' speaking abilities during language training. It is highly recommended that language instructors use TED Talks into their instructional strategies to establish engaging and interactive learning environments that promote language proficiency and proficient communication. The study adds to the body of knowledge already available on the use of multimedia materials in language instruction and provides teachers looking for creative ways to improve their students' speaking skills with useful advice.

These findings highlight the TED Talks' potential as a useful educational resource for enhancing students' speaking

any time. The use of educational, entertaining, and
motivational media in the teaching-learning process
has several benefits when knowledge and ideas are
freely available.

Language use and media consumption are closely
related. It's true that media can help in language
learning. Since language is the main means of
communication, it is one of the most important things
in the entire universe. People can use language to
communicate their ideas, emotions, and goals both
orally and nonverbally. One well-known example of an
open-access teaching and learning platform is TED.

TED is an educational media company that travels the
world holding conferences and events. Videos of TED
speaker sessions, or "TED Talks," are available on the
TED website. You can view these films anywhere and
at

any

time

(Amalia,

2020).

"Technology,

Entertainment, and Design" is what TED stands for
(DeCesare, 2014, p. 17). TED has a section called TED
Talks. A "constrained" presentation, such as one found
in a TED Talk, is frequently more imaginative,
motivating, and captivating (Gallo, 2014). Maser (2021)
argues in favor of the claim that TED is a nonprofit
organization whose mission is to disseminate ideas
through the medium of impactful, 18-minute lectures
These educational videos, which span a range of
important topics and concepts, are designed to be no
more than eighteen minutes. The topics range widely,
from entertainment to language instruction.

TED Talks is a compilation of TED conference
presentations. TED has expanded its reach further, and
as a result of its global popularity, the caliber of its
speakers, films, and content has also improved.
According to Anderson (2016), TED was first an annual
conference that united the domains of entertainment,

technology, and architecture. But in recent years, it has
expanded to cover every topic of public interest. As a
result, there are TED Talks about technical
breakthroughs, particularly in the educational sector
(Nursafira, 2020).

According to Ziebell (2019), TED speeches are excellent
tools for ESL teachers to use in their instruction. TED is
a non-profit organization that was founded with the
goal of disseminating knowledge and ideas,
particularly through succinct but impactful lectures.
TED talks exist on nearly every subject under the sun:
science, technology, design, health, the environment,
personal development, and a host of other subjects.
There are currently more than 3100 presentations
available. As such, there is a talk that will motivate each
and every kid in the class. According to Kumar &
Mohanasundaram (2020, p. 13), TED Talk is one of the
most well-known and prestigious video networks on
the internet, featuring a wide range of important talk
programs on a variety of topics, including English.
Along with the topic matter, the TED short speeches
will have a significant impact on English language
learners, enabling them to develop their grammar,
pronunciation, and vocabulary in an interactive
manner.

TED Talks encourage student/learner interpretation of
course material and inspire discussion in the classroom
from an educator's perspective.

TED Talks can stimulate classroom debate from the
perspective of the instructor and aid in the students'
and learners' comprehension of the subject matter.
When teaching English to speakers of other languages,
TED presentations can be a helpful resource. ..(Syarifah
& Nurhidayat, 2019). For students enrolled in English
language learning classes, Learning English with TED

Talks is an additional resource. With the help of this
video-based language learning program, viewers of
TED Talks may comprehend and investigate important
ideas.

To maximize vocabulary acquisition, we can select TED
lectures that are very vocabulary-rich for our English
language teaching classes. It doesn't matter if the talks
include some tough vocabulary

nearly all of them

have transcripts available in different languages.
Therefore, it is possible to rapidly understand the
meaning of challenging words with the aid of the
transcript. Nothing works better than talk expressed in
writing (Anderson, 2016).

This study aims to explore the use of TED Talks in ELT,
or English Language Teaching. The descriptive
qualitative method is employed in this study. The
results indicate that students can acquire a range of
English language skills from TED Talks, including
speaking, listening, and writing. When it comes to
speaking, TED speeches give students the chance to
hear from successful speakers and examine the
organization and delivery of these speeches.

In order to prepare them for in-class analysis and to
help them become comfortable with the language and
subject matter, teachers should allow their students to
watch a selection of TED Talks outside of class. By just
listening to a native English speaker, students can
observe some TED chats about a topic that interests
them. TED talks are presented by native English
speakers from all around the world. Their
comprehension, vocabulary, and pronunciation can all
be improved with their assistance. Transcripts of
available TED Talks enable students to follow along
with the spoken word in writing. This can improve their
vocabulary and grammar so they can hear what is

being said more quickly. It is noteworthy to mention
that there are numerous websites or digital channels
where educators and students can access English-
language TED Talks videos including speeches or
presentations by globally recognized inspirational
leaders on a range of fascinating subjects.

Students who use these video-based language learning
programs have a deeper understanding of and
curiosity for the topics covered in the TED Talks. Easy-
to-use classroom resources are provided by Teaching
English with TED Talks to help all English language
programs. TED speeches, such as this one about
teaching ESL, are also excellent resources for
educators. One of the real extra resources that English
teachers can oversee in their language learning
programs is teaching English using TED Talks.

Any English language program benefits from using TED
Talks to learn the language using simple-to-use
teaching resources that support students in finding
their voice in the English language. For those who are
teaching or learning English, TED presentations
provide entertaining and free content (Ziebell, 2019).
They can be used by educators to improve their classes
and pique students' enthusiasm in learning languages.
According to Ziebell (2019), one tool that instructors
and educators can use to teach ESL using a CLIL-like
method is TED presentations. The non-profit
organization's mission is to disseminate ideas through
strong speeches and short forms. TED presentations
exist on nearly every subject under the sun, including
science, technology, design, health, the environment,
and personal development. There are currently more
than 3100 presentations available. As a result, there is
a discussion in class that will inspire each student
individually.
