DIFFICULTIES FACED BY UZBEK STUDENTS IN LEARNING
ENGLISH GRAMMAR
Abstract:
Learning English has been increasingly common for all people, irrespective of their
background, around the world. They aim to reach higher score in their academic and career fields
by learning this language. While there are clear benefits, but I believe that they experience many
challenges related to pronunciation, grammar and sentence completion. In this thesis, some
grammar difficulties faced by Uzbek students will be discussed.

English is not only the communication thing, which is clear for most people over the
world, but also is the language with confusing grammar for Uzbek students. For instance, word
order is the most challenging one. Because the uzbek language is in Turkic language family, but
The English is in Indo-European language family. So, their word-order is very different from
each other. “In Uzbek language word-order is subject + object + verb and in English this is
subject+verb+object” mentioned by Kutlimuratova Barno in her thesis. In English language we
make sentences: “ I eat an apple every day ”, but in Uzbek language we say: “ I every day an
apple eat “. These two different types of sentence structure is challenging for both of the
billinguals and polyglots.
” Uzbek grammar is vastly different from English grammar, making it
challenging for students to learn and comprehend the English language's grammatical rules. For
example, in Uzbek, the word order is subject-object-verb, while in English, it is subject-verb-
object. The difference in grammar rules can lead to confusion and difficulties in learning and
understanding the language”, - mentioned Barno Kutlimuratova and Urazbay Abdullaev in their
thesis.
The second grammatical difficulty is having the main 12 tenses in the English language.
This is the most problematic issue, because every beginner uzbek student should learn and
differentiate the theme of tenses. For example:
1. Present continuous: I am working now.
2. Present simple: I do this task every Monday.
3. Present perfect: I have cleaned this room.
4. Present perfect continuous: I have been cleaning this room for five hours.
5. Past continuous: I was working.
6. Past simple: I did it.
7. Past perfect: I had talked about that before.
8. Past perfect continuous: I had been talking.
9. Future continuous: I will be cleaning this room.
10. Future simple: I will clean this yard.
11. Future perfect: I will have finished this task by 4 AM.
12. Future perfect continuous: I will have been cleaning this yard for two hours.

The confusing side is having the uzbek language only three tenses, such as Past tense,
Present tense and Future tense. As a result, students may have a confusion regarding with
using which tense(s) are correct.
The third challenging thing is having articles in English, which does not have in
Uzbek language. For example, I have a dog. In translation from one language to another
these articles are dropped. Also, there is not any equivalence in Uzbek language. But it is
in Uzbek version: “Mening kuchugim bor”. There is not used any article in this sentence.
According to Sura Mutlak Nasser, starting to learn a/an, the articles is difficult for
English as a Foreign Language students (EFL). It can cause a lot of mistakes in the
learning language, as a result, student may result lower score in examination.
Apart from Sura Mutlak Nasser, Akhmad and Khan considered the English
articles is the most challenging matter. Moreover, Hasbun mentioned the English articles
are very difficult, when there is no any article in learning students’ mother tongue.
(Ahmad and Khan, 2019)
Cakir and Abdumalik mention , “ Grammar is the backbone of any language”, which
means a person learning a new language can not integrate with other people in the language, if
she or he does not know the basic rules of grammar.
Rina Listia and Emma Rosana Febriyanti ( Lambung Mangkurat University) say, “ The
primary goal of learning a foreign language is to be able to communicate in the language, both in
spoken and written form”.
The next problematic issue is making different tense forms helping the same auxiliary
verb. For example, am/is/are auxiliary verbs can make Present continuous, Passive voice of
Present continuous and Present simple. For instance, she is working. Work is being done by her.
Work is done by her. In spite of their same auxiliary verbs, all of which have different meanings
from each other. Of course, these forms can be confusing for Foreign Language students in
Uzbekistan. Rina Listia and Emma Rosana Febriyanti advice using various techniques, such as a
multiple choice test and questionnaire. These ways help students to improve their language skill,
then they can be more fluent in communication in the language.
The next issue is suffixes and prepositions. In English language some prepositions are
written separately from the word , but their meanings are equal to the meanings of suffixes in the
Uzbek language. For example, that dog is standing in the house. That cat is standing on the roof.
I ate an apple. She came to the house. From my school age, I have been working in this hotel. In
these sentences prepositions’ meaning is equal –da, -dan, -ni, -ga in Uzbek language. The Uzbek
students may be confusing with using these prepositions, because in our language these are
written with the word itself. Compare:
I ate an apple – Men olmani yedim.
She came to the house – U uyga keldi ( to – ga )
From my school age, I have been working in this hotel – Men bu mehmonxonada maktab
yoshimdan buyon ishlab kelyapman. ( from – dan )
That dog is standing in the house – ( in – da, ichida )

Another problems for students to learn English are a lack of student preparation,
motivation, inadequate classroom materials.
“ English plays a significant role in developing educational systems worldwide. Grammar is an
important aspect of learning English language. Without learning the grammar; the language
cannot be practiced properly. English writing is considered as a vital part during the academic
life of students. Several grammatical errors and difficulties appeared among students when
leaning English because of the poor knowledge and experience of students with lexis and
grammar in their daily life “ , - said Israa Eibead Aiai . In short, learning grammar is important
for every English learners, if they aim expressing their ideas clearly and communicating in this
language properly.
