MORPHOLOGY OF WESTERN AZERBAIJAN DIALECTS
Key words:
Western Azerbaijani dialects, morphological, dialectology, Turkic
The rich dialect and dialect system of the Azerbaijani language is the result of its historical
development, geographical spread and various ethno-cultural influences. One of these dialect
regions is the territory of Western Azerbaijan (meaning the language of Azerbaijanis living in the
territory of the present-day Republic of Armenia). Western Azerbaijani dialects occupy an
important place in the dialect system of the Azerbaijani language and are distinguished by their
unique morphological features. This article analyzes the morphological structure, suffix use, and
rules for the formation of verbs, nouns and other parts of speech of Western Azerbaijani dialects.
The morphological features of nouns are particularly noteworthy. The following morphological
differences are observed in the noun category in Western Azerbaijani dialects: Forms of the
plural suffix: Instead of the suffix -lar/-ler in the literary language, in some cases forms such as -
nanar, -nener are observed. For example: adamnanar (men), ushağnäner (children). Use of the
possessive suffix: In words in the possessive case, unlike the literary language, the form -nın/-nin
is predominant instead of the suffix -ın/-in. For example: brəsərənn kitabı, anamın evi.
Grammatical gender category: As in the literary Azerbaijani language, there is no gender
category in Western Azerbaijani dialects, but in some lexical units the masculine-feminine
meaning is given not through suffixes, but depending on the context.
When looking at the morphological characteristics of verbs, interesting points attract attention. In
Western Azerbaijani dialects, there are a number of differences in the tense, person and
imperative forms of verbs: Person suffixes: In particular, in the first person singular, -em can be
used instead of -am, and in the second person singular, -san can be used instead of -sén. For
example: gedirəm → gedirəm, bakırşans → bakırşans. Imperative form: Instead of imperative
forms in the literary language, more strict and specific forms of expression are used. For example:
get! instead of get da!, de! instead of de bak!.
Some local conjunctions and conjunctions are widely used in Western Azerbaijani dialects. For
example: дəə (дə), бах ки, дəүү, əəə (for emotional expression). These forms not only increase
the fluency and expressiveness of speech, but also preserve the local color.
In conclusion, we should also note that the Western Azerbaijani dialects constitute a rich
dialectal layer of the Azerbaijani language. Their morphological features, differences in the
pronunciation and structure of forms are of particular importance in terms of studying the history
of the language and the linguistic culture of the population of the region. The study of these
dialects, in addition to contributing to Azerbaijani linguistics, also plays an important role in
preserving these language variants and transmitting them to future generations.
