COMPARING TRADITIONAL TEACHING METHODS WITH AI-ASSISTED ENGLISH
LANGUAGE INSTRUCTION

Abstract:
This study investigates the comparative effectiveness of traditional English language
teaching methods and AI-assisted instruction. With the advancement of artificial intelligence in
education, tools such as language learning apps, chatbots, and generative AI models like ChatGPT
are increasingly integrated into classrooms. This research evaluates both approaches in terms of
student performance, engagement, and satisfaction. Using a quasi-experimental design with two
student groups, the study analyzes quantitative outcomes through pre- and post-tests and
qualitative data through surveys and classroom observations. Results indicate that while traditional
methods offer structured and teacher-guided learning, AI-assisted instruction significantly
enhances learner autonomy, motivation, and personalized feedback. The paper concludes with
implications for integrating both methodologies to optimize English language instruction.

1. Introduction
The global demand for English language proficiency continues to grow, driving the need for
effective and innovative teaching methods. Traditional classroom instruction, characterized by
teacher-led lessons, textbooks, and repetitive exercises, has long been the cornerstone of English
language education. However, the emergence of artificial intelligence (AI) presents new
opportunities to augment language learning through personalized, data-driven, and interactive tools.
This paper aims to compare traditional English teaching methods with AI-assisted instruction.
The objective is to assess which approach better supports language acquisition, engagement, and
learner outcomes. As AI tools like ChatGPT become more accessible, understanding their
pedagogical impact is vital for educators, policymakers, and curriculum developers.
2. Methodology
2.1 Research Design
A quasi-experimental design was employed to compare the effectiveness of traditional and AI-
assisted English language instruction. The study lasted for 10 weeks and involved two student
groups.
2.2 Participants
A total of 60 university-level English language learners participated, divided into a control
group (traditional instruction) and an experimental group (AI-assisted instruction), with 30
students in each.

The control group followed a standard English curriculum with classroom lectures, gra mmar
drills, and textbook-based exercises. The experimental group received the same curriculum
supplemented with AI tools, including ChatGPT for conversation practice, Grammarly for writing
feedback, and language learning apps for interactive vocabulary and grammar practice.
2.4 Data Collection
Pre- and post-tests measured vocabulary, grammar, reading comprehension, and writing
skills.
Surveys evaluated student motivation, satisfaction, and perceived usefulness of instruction.
Classroom observations assessed participation and engagement.
2.5 Data Analysis
Statistical analysis using paired t-tests compared learning gains between the two groups.
Qualitative data from surveys and observations were analyzed thematically.
3. Results
3.1 Learning Outcomes
Both groups improved significantly from pre- to post-tests. However, the experimental group
showed greater gains, particularly in writing and vocabulary. The mean score improvement for the
AI-assisted group was 24%, compared to 16% in the traditional group.
3.2 Engagement and Participation
Observations indicated that students in the AI-assisted group were more engaged, frequently
interacting with ChatGPT for clarification and practice. They participated more in class discussions
and displayed increased confidence in using English.
3.3 Student Perception
Survey data revealed that 90% of students in the AI-assisted group found the tools helpful in
understanding complex grammar and improving their writing. Students appreciated the immediate
feedback and the ability to learn at their own pace.
4. Discussion
The findings suggest that AI-assisted instruction enhances language learning by offering
personalized, flexible, and responsive support. While traditional teaching provides a strong
foundation through structured explanation and human interaction, it may lack the adaptability that
AI tools offer.
AI applications such as ChatGPT provide opportunities for practice beyond the classroom,
allowing learners to engage in conversations, receive feedback, and revise their work
independently. This aligns with learner-centered approaches that emphasize autonomy and active
participation.
However, the effectiveness of AI tools depends on appropriate integration and teacher
facilitation. Over-reliance on technology without critical engagement can result in superficial

learning. A blended approach that combines the strengths of traditional and AI-assisted methods
appears to be the most beneficial.
5. Conclusion
Comparing traditional and AI-assisted English instruction reveals that both approaches have
distinct strengths. AI enhances personalization, engagement, and feedback, while traditional
methods ensure structure and guidance. Educators should consider integrating AI tools into their
teaching practices to create a balanced, effective learning environment. Future research should
examine long-term effects, cultural considerations, and teacher training for AI integration.
