INTERCULTURAL PRAGMATICS AND PHRASEOLOGY: THE INTERFACE
BETWEEN LANGUAGE, CULTURE AND STYLE

Abstract:
This article analyzes the role and function of phraseological units from the perspective
of intercultural pragmatics. The interrelationship between language, culture, and style is considered
using the example of phraseological units, and their semantic, stylistic, and cultural aspects are
highlighted. Based on a comparative analysis of phraseological units in English and Uzbek,
intercultural differences, communicative problems, and translation problems are identified. The
results of the article show the importance of phraseology in intercultural communication and offer
practical recommendations that can be applied in the process of language learning and teaching.

INTRODUCTION
In the current period of deepening globalization, relations between peoples have expanded, and
intercultural communication has become one of the priority areas of modern linguistics. In
particular, the understanding and transmission of culture through language, the analysis of the
cultural features of speech are at the center of attention of linguistic research today. From this
context, intercultural pragmatics and phraseology are interconnected concepts. Phraseological units
are not only the lexical richness of the language, but also means of conveying cultural, social, and
stylistic information. Intercultural pragmatics studies how speech participants from different
cultures communicate through language, what pragmatic strategies they use, and how
misunderstandings and cultural barriers arise. In this process, the role of phraseological units is of
particular importance, since they often have national-cultural content and are not fully equivalent
to translation into another language. Therefore, by studying phraseological units, it is possible to
form a deep understanding not only of the language, but also of the mentality, values, and
worldview of the people.
Issues of intercultural pragmatics and phraseology have become one of the most pressing topics in
modern linguistics. In this regard, such scholars as T. A. van Dijk (1997), D. Bloom-Kulka (1989),
and G. Yul (1996) put forward deeply scientifically based approaches to the importance of
pragmatic strategies and context in intercultural communication. In particular, Bloom-Kulka
commented on the cultural interpretation of speech acts and the causes of communicative
dissatisfaction within the framework of intercultural pragmatics. The issue of the connection of
phraseology with cultures was addressed by such scholars as P. Kunn (1984), V. Mokiyenko
(2001), and N. A. Lukyanova (2012), in whose research the national-cultural aspects, semantic
features, and translation problems of phraseological units were analyzed. Especially in Uzbek and
English linguistics, Sh. Such scientists as R. Makhmudov (2017), D. Zhuraev (2019) studied the
relationship between language and culture on the example of phraseology and paid special
attention to the communicative and stylistic functions of phraseology.
In recent years, the integration of intercultural pragmatics with cognitive approaches has been
observed. For example, E. A. Nida (2003) in translation theory explains the intercultural transfer of
phraseological units on a cognitive basis. This requires the analysis of phraseological units not only
as a linguistic element, but also as a cultural-cognitive unit.
1. Interrelation between language, culture, and style
Language, as a reflection of human thought and culture, serves as the main means of
communicative processes in society. The styles of thought, emotion, and evaluation expressed in

each language emdiv the historical, social, and cultural experience of the people who created this
language. In particular, phraseological units are the embedded form of this cultural memory. For
example, the English phraseologism "break the ice" (to melt the ice, that is, to start a conversation)
expresses the idea of softening the ice in social communication, while the Uzbek expression
"gapga kirishmoq" (to enter into conversation) means cultural politeness and careful approach to
relevant topics. Style determines how language is used in different communicative situations.
Although phraseologisms are stylistically often a component of oral, informal, figurative speech,
they are used in some contexts in formal, artistic, or even scientific speech. This shows their multi-
layered stylistic possibilities.
2. Intercultural pragmatics and interpretation of phraseological units.
In intercultural communication, misinterpretation or misunderstanding of phraseological units can
lead to communicative barriers. Because they often have a metaphorical meaning and require
understanding not only the language, but also the experience of the society that created it. For
example, although the English phrase kick the bucket means "to die," its literal translation loses its
cultural connotation. In the Uzbek language, there are such phrases as "jon taslim qilmoq,"
"olamdan o'tmoq," which are selected according to the context. Also, due to cultural differences,
some phraseological units cannot be transferred to another language in an equivalent way. For
example, it is difficult to find a phraseologism in English that directly corresponds to the Uzbek
phrase "tosh bosmoq" (to secretly lift a weight, to be patient). In these cases, the translator or
participant in the speech is forced to choose a pragmatic equivalent.
3. Stylistic function of phraseological units.
Phraseologisms are important not only at the semantic level, but also from a stylistic point of view.
They introduce imagery, expressiveness, and emotionality into the speech and often express the
author's attitude. For example, with the expression "it's not my cup of tea," a person expresses a
soft negative attitude towards an activity they do not like. This stylistic function communicatively
brings it closer to the "face-saving" strategy in a cross-cultural context. The phrase "o'zidan bol
tomadi" in the Uzbek language is a figurative expression expressing a warm, positive attitude
towards a person and is often used in the oral style. Such phrases, while performing the functions
of social and cultural evaluation in the language, also reveal the social function of style.
4. Intercultural study and teaching of phraseological units
In the process of language teaching, it is important to consider the intercultural features of
phraseological units. For a person learning a foreign language, understanding phraseological units
in context and their appropriate use is an important element of intercultural pragmatic competence.
Therefore, modern linguodidactic approaches suggest teaching phraseology not only in its lexical
meaning, but also on a cultural basis. Understanding the cultural load of phraseological units, the
ability to use them in accordance with the pragmatic situation is necessary for communicative
success. This is especially important for translators, foreign language teachers, and specialists in
the field of international relations.
CONCLUSION
Phraseological units are important elements that preserve and express the cultural memory of the
language, and their role in the intercultural pragmatic context is of current importance. The study
showed that phraseological units have not only semantic, but also stylistic and cultural loads,
which can be incorrectly interpreted during communication between different cultures. Therefore,
it is necessary to analyze, translate, and teach them based on in-depth linguistic and cultural studies.
Taking into account the functional and methodological features of phraseological units within the
framework of intercultural pragmatics increases the effectiveness of communication and serves the
formation of important pragmatic skills for language learners.
