DEVELOPING 21ST-CENTURY UNIVERSAL COMPETENCIES THROUGH
INTERDISCIPLINARY INTEGRATION

Abstract:
This article explores the role of interdisciplinary integration in developing essential
21st-century universal competencies such as critical thinking, creativity, collaboration,
communication, and digital literacy. It discusses how connecting knowledge across disciplines
fosters deeper understanding, promotes real-world problem-solving, and prepares students to
function effectively in complex, globalized contexts. The paper also presents practical strategies
for implementing interdisciplinary teaching to achieve holistic educational goals.

The 21st century demands more than subject-specific knowledge. Today’s students must acquire
universal competencies
that are transferable across domains and essential for success in the
modern world. These include:

Traditional education often isolates subjects into rigid categories, limiting students’ ability to
make meaningful connections between what they learn and how they apply it.

analyze problems from multiple perspectives, synthesize diverse knowledge, and generate
innovative solutions.
Interdisciplinary learning draws from
constructivist theory
