This article highlights the importance and role of extracurricular activities in
developing reading skills in primary school students. The author analyzes how such activities
positively influence children's vocabulary expansion, independent reading habits, text
comprehension, and analytical abilities. The research findings show that extracurricular activities
significantly contribute to students’ academic success.

The primary education stage is a crucial period in which a child’s personality, speech culture,
thinking ability, and attitude towards learning are formed. At this stage, the development of
reading skills is considered one of the main goals of education. Reading is not only a technical
skill but also an activity aimed at perceiving, understanding, thinking critically, and
independently acquiring knowledge. Therefore, enhancing reading proficiency at the primary
level lays a strong foundation for future academic achievements.
Traditional classroom reading exercises are typically based on textbooks and assigned reading
materials. However, this approach may not yield equally effective results for all students, as each
child has unique interests, needs, and learning capacities. From this perspective, extracurricular
educational activities provide a more flexible and engaging environment, allowing for
individualized approaches to developing reading skills.
Extracurricular activities are educational practices that aim to fill students’ free time with
meaningful engagement, attract them to reading, and develop independent thinking and
expressive speech. These activities increase students' interest in texts, stimulate creative thinking,
and promote logical analysis. Especially through interactive forms such as dramatizations,
reading contests, and reading clubs, children's emotional and intellectual growth is significantly
fostered.
This article specifically examines the effectiveness of extracurricular activities in shaping
reading skills among primary school students. Observations conducted as part of an academic
experiment tracked changes in students' attitudes toward reading, comprehension levels, and
verbal activity. The main objective of this research is to provide primary school teachers with
effective strategies for enhancing reading skills and to justify the positive impact of
extracurricular learning on education quality.

During the study, an experiment was conducted with second-grade students. In the experimental
class, “Reading Club” sessions were held twice a week. During these sessions, students read
fairy tales and stories, discussed them, and performed dramatizations. The control class, in
contrast, was limited to textbook materials only. The results were analyzed through observations,
interviews, and written assessments.
The results of the experiment showed that students in the experimental class demonstrated
significantly higher vocabulary, comprehension, and expressive reading skills compared to the
control group. Additionally, students who participated in extracurricular activities expressed
more positive attitudes towards books, which positively impacted their overall academic
engagement. They actively participated in Q&A sessions and were able to think independently
based on the content of the texts.
Developing reading skills in primary school students is not only the responsibility of the teacher
during class but also an organic pedagogical process that fosters the student’s internal motivation,
curiosity, and engagement. The study confirmed that extracurricular activities serve as an
effective tool in forming essential competencies such as independent reading, text
comprehension, expressive reading, and critical thinking.
Extracurricular activities provide a pedagogical platform for fostering a love for literature,
expanding vocabulary, developing oral and written speech, and deepening thought. Especially
through reading clubs, literary evenings, and creative meetings, students develop a positive
attitude toward reading, which directly contributes to their educational success.
Therefore, enriching the educational process in primary schools with extracurricular activities,
developing special methodological guides for these activities, and enhancing teachers'
qualifications in this area is of great importance. For reading skills to be solidly formed, students
must be able to understand what they read, express their opinions, think critically, and approach
texts creatively. Achieving this is only possible through an integrated, student-centered, and
creatively organized educational process.
