HOW TO LEARN A LANGUAGE BY WATCHING MOVIES AND TV SHOWS

Abstract.
The use of movies and TV shows as tools for language learning has gained
global popularity due to their accessibility, authenticity, and immersive potential. This article
examines how audiovisual media can facilitate second language acquisition by enhancing
listening comprehension, pronunciation, vocabulary retention, cultural awareness, and learner
motivation.
This article combines key ideas from language learning research with useful strategies
like using subtitles effectively, choosing the right content, and staying actively involved. It also
discusses common difficulties and gives helpful advice to make the most of learning a language
through movies and TV shows.

Аннотация.
Использование фильмов и телесериалов в качестве инструментов для
изучения языков приобрело мировую популярность благодаря своей доступности,
аутентичности и способности погружать учащегося в языковую среду. В данной статье
рассматривается, как аудиовизуальные материалы могут способствовать освоению
второго языка за счёт улучшения восприятия на слух, произношения, запоминания
словарного запаса, культурной осведомлённости и повышения мотивации учащихся.
Статья сочетает в себе ключевые идеи из исследований в области изучения
языков с полезными стратегиями, такими как эффективное использование субтитров,
правильный выбор контента и активное вовлечение в процесс. Также обсуждаются
распространённые трудности и приводятся практические советы для более
эффективного использования фильмов и телесериалов в изучении языка.

Introduction.
As streaming services become more widespread and access to multimedia
content grows globally, the traditional limits of language education are rapidly changing. Once
seen merely as forms of entertainment, movies and television shows are now viewed as valuable
resources for learning new languages. These media offer natural, real-life language examples
that often reflect everyday speech more accurately than standard classroom materials. According
to Stephen Krashen’s Input Hypothesis (1982), learners acquire language most effectively when
exposed to comprehensible input
—
language that is just beyond their current level. Films and TV
shows provide this kind of input in a way that is both engaging and accessible.

This article discusses how language learners can make the most of
audiovisual materials, reviews relevant research, provides practical techniques for effective use,
and highlights some challenges learners may face. Movies and television shows reflect how
people actually speak in daily life, including the use of regional accents, slang, idiomatic
expressions, and varying tones or levels of formality. This kind of exposure helps learners
become more comfortable with real-life conversations
—
something traditional textbooks often
fail to provide. For instance, watching British series like The Office (UK) or sitcoms such as
Friends can help learners understand informal language and humor, while period dramas like
The Crown offer examples of formal and refined speech.
Listening regularly to native speakers sharpens a learner’s ability to process spoken
language. It enhances recognition of sound patterns, stress, intonation, and rhythm. With
continued exposure, learners start picking up on these elements naturally, without needing to
study them directly

this is known as passive learning.
Acquiring vocabulary within meaningful contexts is far more effective than memorizing
isolated words. Visual elements on screen help reinforce meaning, and repeated exposure to
words in context improves retention. As noted by Webb (2007), encountering vocabulary
multiple times in relevant settings significantly boosts the chances of remembering it.
Language and culture are closely linked. By watching films and shows, learners gain a
better understanding of cultural norms, humor, gestures, and unspoken rules of communication.
This cultural awareness is vital for using language appropriately in real social situations.
Motivation plays a key role in successful language learning. Watching entertaining or
personally interesting content in the target language makes the learning process more enjoyable
and emotionally engaging. This, in turn, encourages learners to stay committed and continue
practicing over the long term. Level-appropriate material: Beginners might start with cartoons or
educational series; intermediate learners can move to sitcoms and dramas. Familiar storylines:
Rewatching a known movie in the target language improves understanding. Language clarity:
Shows with clear diction and standard accents (like Modern Family or Stranger Things) are
easier to follow.
Short, daily sessions (15
–
30 minutes) are more effective than long, infrequent sessions.
Use watching logs to track vocabulary learned, episodes watched, and pronunciation.
Language learners often encounter difficulties such as fast or unclear speech, relying too
much on subtitles, struggling to remember new vocabulary, and misinterpreting cultural
elements. However, these challenges can be addressed with practical solutions. It's helpful to
begin with easy-to-understand content or slow down the playback speed. To build listening
skills, learners should gradually reduce their use of subtitles or switch them on and off as needed.

Tools like spaced repetition apps can improve vocabulary retention. For better cultural
understanding, watching videos should be supported by reading about the customs and traditions
of the target culture.

Learning a language through movies and TV shows goes beyond simple
entertainment

it is a proven and effective approach grounded in cognitive and linguistic
research. It promotes the natural development of language skills, exposes learners to cultural
subtleties, and helps sustain motivation over time. When applied thoughtfully

turn casual viewing into a powerful and engaging learning experience. Whether used as a
complement to traditional study or as a main learning method, media can help learners gain
greater fluency, self-confidence, and cultural understanding.
