Abstract. This article explores the poetic and comparative aspects of literary genres,
focusing on science fiction and fantasy. Drawing from genre theory and comparative literature,
the study examines how these genres interact with cultural traditions and literary frameworks. By
referencing Anglo-American, Russian, and Uzbek literary criticism, the article discusses the
historical development, thematic structures, and theoretical interpretations of science fiction and
fantasy. The study highlights the dynamic evolution of these genres, their intersections with
mythology and technology, and their role in shaping cultural narratives. It further investigates
how these genres reflect societal concerns, ethical dilemmas, and philosophical inquiries in
contemporary literature.
Keywords: Fantasy, Science Fiction, Genre Theory, Comparative Literature, Myth,

Introduction
Genre theory provides a fundamental framework for understanding literary classifications.
As articulated by Mahoney (2019), genre distinctions are shaped both internally—through
narrative structures and stylistic elements—and externally, through cultural and historical
influences. The relationship between fantasy and science fiction has been a major focus in literary
studies, with scholars debating their boundaries and overlaps. This paper explores the poetic
structures of these genres and their comparative study within different literary traditions,
particularly Anglo-American, Russian, and Uzbek literary criticism.
Genre is not merely a classification but a cultural construct that evolves over time. As
Stephan (2016) suggests, genre functions as a system of conventions that guide both authors and
readers in their interpretative frameworks. Russian scholars argue that genres, much like baroque
dance forms, impose constraints that authors either adhere to or subvert. This fluidity in genre
definitions is evident in the overlap between science fiction and fantasy, where thematic and

stylistic elements often intersect (Mahoney, 2019). Uzbek literary criticism suggests that genres
evolve in response to cultural and national identity needs, reflecting socio-political realities and
historical transformations (Pроблемы жанра и поджанра фантастики, 2023).
The development of fantasy and science fiction can be traced to classical literature, where
mythological narratives laid the groundwork for speculative storytelling. In the 19th century,
science fiction emerged as a distinct genre, influenced by technological advancements and
scientific discourse. Jules Verne and H.G. Wells are pivotal figures in this transformation,
embedding scientific speculation within their narratives. Fantasy, on the other hand, retains strong
connections to folklore, legend, and epic traditions, as seen in the works of J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S.
Lewis (Nasriddinov, 2023). The early 20th century saw the rise of modern fantasy and science
fiction, particularly in Anglo-American literary traditions, with the advent of pulp magazines, the
Golden Age of Science Fiction, and the New Wave movement.
Comparative Literary Perspectives: Anglo-American, Russian, and Uzbek
Traditions
: A comparative approach reveals significant variations in the reception and
development of these genres. Anglo-American criticism often emphasizes narrative structure and
world-building, whereas Russian literary theory integrates philosophical and socio-political
interpretations (Understanding Genre Theory in Literature, 2023). Uzbek literary criticism, as
highlighted by recent studies, incorporates mythological motifs and national identity within its
analysis of fantasy and science fiction (Pроблемы жанра и поджанра фантастики, 2023).
Additionally, Uzbek scholars view fantasy and science fiction as vehicles for cultural
expression, offering insights into the interplay between tradition and modernity.
Fantasy and science fiction share thematic elements such as world-building, mythic
structures, and speculative scenarios. However, their distinguishing feature lies in their
epistemological approach: science fiction is grounded in scientific rationality, whereas fantasy
embraces the supernatural and mythical. The convergence of these elements is evident in hybrid
subgenres, such as science fantasy, which integrates technological innovation with fantastical
elements. These genres also serve as reflections of societal concerns, exploring themes such as
artificial intelligence, posthumanism, ecological disasters, and ethical dilemmas in scientific
advancement (Mahoney, 2019). In contrast, fantasy often critiques power structures through
allegorical storytelling and the reimagining of mythological archetypes.
Science fiction and fantasy are more than entertainment; they function as forms of cultural
and philosophical inquiry. Science fiction, in particular, is concerned with the impact of
technology on society, raising questions about ethics, identity, and the limits of human knowledge.

Fantasy, by contrast, often explores moral and existential themes through symbolic
storytelling, addressing issues of heroism, destiny, and the nature of good and evil. The
philosophical dimensions of these genres have been explored by scholars such as Rosemary
Jackson, Tzvetan Todorov, and Darko Suvin, who emphasize the role of speculative fiction in
questioning reality and challenging dominant ideologies (Understanding Genre Theory in
Literature, 2023).
Conclusion
The study of fantasy and science fiction within comparative literature highlights the
complexity and adaptability of genre classifications. By examining these genres through multiple
literary traditions, it becomes evident that their boundaries are not rigid but fluid, allowing for
continuous reinterpretation. As technological advancements and cultural narratives evolve, so too
will the speculative landscapes of literature, ensuring the continued relevance and transformation
of fantasy and science fiction in global literary discourse. Furthermore, the comparative study of
these genres reveals their profound impact on cultural identity, philosophical discourse, and
literary innovation.
