THE IMPORTANCE OF TEACHING ENGLISH FOR MILITARY
PURPOSES

Annotation:
Nowadays, English remains one of the requirements of the time, it
has its place in every sphere. In particular, the role of English is unrivalled for
members of the military. In my article, I have tried to shed light on why English is
important for military personnel, and definitions of this term.

In today's world, English is predominantly used for communication across
nearly all areas of human activity due to its role as the global lingua franca. Of
course, English, which is one of the languages of the world, also enjoys a lot of
attention in our country. In our country, the growing emphasis on science is
progressively achieving noticeable outcomes. Notably, pursuant to Presidential
Decree PQ-5117-numb. dated 19 May 2021, significant measures were enacted to
elevate the promotion of foreign language acquisition to a qualitatively higher level.

These reforms aim to enhance the effectiveness of institutional strategies supporting
foreign language education.
Consequently, considerable attention has been directed toward the integration of
foreign language instruction across all levels of the national education system. For
instance, English is now incorporated not only into the curricula of students at
advanced scientific institutions but also extended to non-philology students,
reflecting the updated educational standards and evolving academic demands.

- says our honorable President Shavkat
Mirziyoyev in his speech. Each of Uzbekistan's citizen growing young generation no
less than anyone else, world education. It is necessary to be fully educated, fully
capable of meeting the level of standards and we need to get into it with all our
hearts. Today especially the demand and interest in learning English has grown so
much, the study of English has started from kindergarten children to senior
professionals. According to the decisions of our president, the system of teaching
English to students not only of philological but also of non-philological specialties is
being improved. The majors also fall into this category. English language courses are
taught under special programs for cadets and cadets of military schools.
In today’s
international environment, where military personnel often work alongside foreign
troops and participate in peacekeeping missions, proficiency in English has become a
critical requirement.
So, English automatically becomes one of the compulsory
subjects.
“Military English”
, What is this term about? And why it is important
teaching English for military purposes?
More than half a billion results may be found with a quick internet search for
"Military English, " most of which are collections of military jargon or slang.
However, theoretical analyses of Military English are conspicuously lacking, with
few research (by both native and non-native scholars) focusing on particular
grammatical or functional characteristics of this specialized register. In our view,
military language as one of languages for special purposes comprises all linguistic
means
–
terms, military slang and military symbols as semiotic signs
–
for
designating military organizations, personnel, military ranks and hierarchy, armament
and military equipment, military systems, types of military activities, tasks and

operations, which are defined in doctrines, strategies, manuals, guides, orders and
similar specialized military/ defense national and international documents and
collections of informal military slang.

As we have already mentioned-English plays a special role for military
purposes. Here are 5 reasons why learning English is essential for military personnel.
English as a language of command and control
In numerous multinational military operations, English functions as the lingua
franca, serving as the primary means of communication. It is employed as the
language of command and control, particularly in joint operations involving troops
from various nations. In such contexts, military personnel who are proficient in
English hold a notable advantage over those who lack such skills.
Improved communication and coordination
Effective communication is essential for the success of any military operation.
Personnel proficient in English can engage more efficiently with their counterparts
from other nations, thereby improving coordination and minimizing the risk of
misunderstandings. Furthermore, English serves as the primary language of
diplomacy, frequently utilized in negotiations and meetings with foreign military
officials.
Access to training and education
A significant number of military training programs, particularly those provided
by international organizations, are conducted in English. Acquiring proficiency in
English enables access to a broader spectrum of training and educational
opportunities, including advanced courses that can facilitate career progression.
Career advancement
In the contemporary globalized landscape, military personnel with fluency in
English are highly sought after. They are frequently assigned to international postings
and entrusted with roles that necessitate cross-cultural communication and
coordination. Furthermore, proficiency in English is crucial for career progression,
particularly in sectors such as diplomacy, intelligence, and international relations.
Cultural exchange
Acquiring proficiency in English offers individuals the opportunity to engage
with people from diverse cultures and backgrounds. It fosters an appreciation for
varying perspectives and cultivates a deeper understanding of the world. This cultural

effectiveness in one's role.
Historically, military language teaching has played a pioneering role in the
development of innovative language teaching approaches. It introduced audio-lingual
approaches in the 1950s (McCormick Citation1970) and incorporated e-learning and
virtual learning spaces from the 1990s
. No doubts that each profession, including
fields such as business, politics, law, medicine, science, music, art, acting, maritime
work, electrical work, and mechanics, possesses its own distinct language, often
referred to as jargon or lingo.
And that’s why it’s important to know
, understand
English for specific purposes.
Conclusion, Effective communication in English has emerged as an essential
skill for contemporary military personnel engaged in international and multicultural
settings. Instruction in English for military applications not only provides service
members with the necessary linguistic capabilities for successful joint missions,
peacekeeping efforts, and global training exercises, but also enhances overall military
preparedness. By prioritizing specialized language training, military organizations
can more effectively equip their personnel to address the intricate challenges of the
current global security environment.
