Annotation:
This paper examines the various types of phraseological units in
the English language and their significance in language acquisition. Phraseological
units—such as phraseological combinations, collocations, and idioms—play a crucial
role in expressing language naturally and emotionally. The paper highlights their
usage across artistic, conversational, and academic styles. Learning these units
contributes to enhancing communication skills and fostering cultural awareness
among language learners.

Аннотация:
В статье рассматриваются различные типы фразеологических
единиц в английском языке и их роль в изучении языка. Фразеологические
единицы — такие как фразеологические сочетания, коллокации и идиомы —
играют важную роль в естественном и эмоциональном выражении языка. В
статье показано их использование в художественном, разговорном и научном
стилях. Изучение этих единиц способствует развитию коммуникативных
навыков и культурного понимания у изучающих язык.

Phraseological units are multi-word expressions that often have a figurative
meaning that cannot be translated word-for-word. These expressions are essential in
adding emotional depth, naturalness, and stylistic richness to a language. For English
language learners, understanding and effectively using phraseological units is crucial
for mastering the language in a fluent and authentic manner.
Categories of Phraseological Units
Phraseological units can be classified into three primary types: phraseological
combinations, phraseological collocations, and idioms.
Phraseological Combinations: In phraseological combinations, the words
maintain their literal meanings but form fixed expressions when used together.
Examples include phrases like "take responsibility" (accept responsibility) and "pay
attention" (focus on something).
Phraseological Collocations: Phraseological collocations refer to expressions in
which the words are strongly linked. For instance, expressions like "catch a cold,"
"make a mistake," and "do research" belong to this category. Although it's
grammatically possible to change individual words, altering the combination can
result in a stylistic error.
Idioms: Idioms are expressions with entirely figurative meanings, and
attempting to translate them literally would lead to confusion. For example, "spill the
beans" (reveal a secret) and "hit the sack" (go to bed) are idiomatic expressions. A
literal translation would make no sense [3;22].
Usage of Phraseological Units
Phraseological units are used in various contexts within the English language. In
literary styles, they enhance vividness and emotional appeal. For example, the phrase
"He kicked the bucket" means "he passed away" and adds a dramatic touch [1;130].
In casual conversation, these expressions make communication more engaging.
For instance, "I'm feeling under the weather today" means "I'm feeling unwell" and
offers a more relaxed and informal way to convey the idea.
In formal and academic writing, while phraseological units are used more
cautiously, they still serve to make communication more effective and impactful. For
example, the phrase "The results speak for themselves" is used to strongly emphasize
the findings.

The Significance of Phraseological Units
Natural Communication
Phraseological units help in making language expression more natural and
fluent. For instance, the phrase "You hit the nail on the head" (you made the correct
point) is frequently used in English and forms an essential part of everyday speech
[2;45]
Cultural Context
Idioms and phraseological units encapsulate the cultural values and historical
contexts of the English language. A good example is the phrase "a blessing in
disguise," which refers to something that initially appears negative but ultimately
turns out to be beneficial [6;49].
Conciseness and Clarity in Communication
Phraseological units allow for expressing complex ideas in a more succinct way.
For example, "The ball is in your court" simply conveys the idea that "it’s your turn
to make a decision".
Emotional Impact
By using idiomatic expressions, speakers can convey their thoughts in a more
powerful way. For instance, "He’s a wolf in sheep’s clothing" describes someone
who seems harmless but is actually dangerous [4;35].
Phraseological units play a crucial role in language learning, contributing not
only to vocabulary building but also to understanding cultural nuances, enabling
natural communication, expressing emotions, and enhancing stylistic richness. To
truly master a language, it is essential to understand these expressions deeply and be
able to apply them in real-life situations. Phraseological units make communication
more dynamic, concise, and impactful.
The analysis of the role and significance of phraseological units in English
highlights their immense value in the language learning process. It's not enough for
learners to simply master grammar and vocabulary; they must also internalize the
phraseological units used in daily communication. These expressions not only bring
conversation to life but also help in grasping the cultural aspects of the language,
developing figurative thinking, and constructing natural speech.
Practical experience shows that a systematic approach to learning phraseological
units greatly enhances a learner’s ability to retain, comprehend, and use them
appropriately in context. Therefore, focusing on this topic is both relevant and
essential, providing a solid foundation for effective language learning. The examples,

theoretical classifications, and contextual analysis demonstrate the learner’s in-depth
understanding of the subject.
