maturity are directly linked to the processes of education and upbringing. The
article presents ancient and modern pedagogical perspectives, including the
thoughts of renowned scholars such as Abu Nasr al-Farabi, Ibn Sina, Yusuf Khas
Hajib, J. Dewey, L. Tolstoy, and A.S. Makarenko. Furthermore, it explains the
critical importance of education and upbringing in today's era—when

Introduction
Education and upbringing play a crucial role in understanding the meaning and
essence of human life. From the moment of birth, a person receives education
and upbringing from their environment, family, society, school, and life
experiences. These processes shape one's worldview, moral values, professional
skills, knowledge, culture, and ability to adapt to society. Therefore, education
and upbringing form the foundation of any society's development.
Concepts of Education and Upbringing
Education is the process through which a person acquires knowledge, skills,
and abilities, while upbringing is the influence directed at a person’s moral,
aesthetic, physical, and spiritual development. These two concepts complement
each other. Knowledge without upbringing can harm society, just as an
uneducated person may misuse their knowledge without proper upbringing.
In today’s age of globalization and information, the issues of education and
upbringing are more relevant than ever. Humanity lives under the influence of
digital technologies, artificial intelligence, social networks, and rapidly changing
social conditions. In such an environment, it is important not only to provide the

younger generation with knowledge but also to raise them based on high moral,
spiritual, and cultural values.
In Uzbekistan, education reform and the improvement of the upbringing
system are among the state’s top policy priorities. In the context of the New
Uzbekistan, forming a competitive, patriotic, spiritually mature, and educated
generation is the foundation of the nation’s progress and sustainability.
Moreover, the role of education and upbringing is critical in preventing
dangerous trends among youth such as moral voids, negative influence of social
media, drug abuse, and susceptibility to extremist ideologies. This confirms the
significance of this topic not only in theory but also in practice.
Thus, harmonizing education and upbringing, and approaching them from
both modern and national value-based perspectives, is one of today’s most
urgent tasks.
Views of Great Thinkers on Education and Upbringing
Great philosophers have always recognized education and upbringing as
key factors in human perfection.
Abu Nasr al-Farabi viewed education as a force that nurtures the intellect.
In his work The Virtuous City, he states:
"Human perfection is achieved by acquiring knowledge, virtue, and
upbringing."
Ibn Sina paid special attention not only to the study of science but also to
the process of upbringing. In his works, he wrote:
"Whatever exists in a person’s nature develops through upbringing, but if
not guided correctly, a person may lose their potential."
Yusuf Khas Hajib, in his work Kutadgu Bilig, presents knowledge and
upbringing
as

happiness.
He
writes:
"Knowledge is light, upbringing is a guiding star; without these two, life is
darkness."
The Role of Education in Society
Education is the foundation of a society’s cultural, social, and economic
development. Any form of progress begins with intellectual capacity. In today’s
globalized world, individuals realize the necessity of lifelong learning and self-
improvement. Modern education not only imparts knowledge but also develops
critical thinking, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
American educator John Dewey said:

"Education is not preparation for life; education is life itself."
This highlights that education is a continuous process, extending beyond school
into lifelong learning.
The Impact of Upbringing on Personal Development
Through upbringing, individuals develop social behavior, moral norms, and
a sense of responsibility. This process primarily occurs through family, school,
social environment, and religious and cultural values.
Leo Tolstoy described upbringing as:
"Upbringing is the art of touching the finest strings of the human soul."
Therefore, the process of upbringing must involve not only verbal instructions
but also personal example, affection, and attention.
Makarenko emphasized that:
"Upbringing is formed through life experience. Every action, every word is
part of upbringing."
The Harmony Between Education and Upbringing
Achieving an ideal personality requires a harmonious integration of
education and upbringing. Their combined effect ensures the intellectual,
spiritual, and physical maturity of individuals. For example, a person full of
knowledge but lacking upbringing can pose a danger to society. Therefore,
teachers, parents, and the wider society must work together.
In today’s world, 21st-century competencies—such as critical thinking,
communication, collaboration, and creativity—are cultivated through both
education and upbringing. In addition, digital literacy and information culture
are also essential components of this process.
Conclusion
A person’s ability to find their place in society, live a prosperous life, and grow
into a well-rounded individual depends largely on the effectiveness of education
and upbringing. While upbringing shapes personal values, education provides
the opportunity to apply them in life. Therefore, every society must prioritize
education and upbringing, and every parent and teacher should deeply
understand the immense importance of these concepts.
