Introduction

The integration of technology in ESL teaching has reshaped traditional

classrooms, enabling educators to adopt innovative methods. The rapid
development of digital tools has provided teachers with resources that enhance
learning, make lessons interactive, and cater to diverse needs. This study aims to

explore the effectiveness of technological tools in ESL classrooms and provide
insights into their application.

Literature Review

Research shows that technology fosters student engagement and improves

language acquisition. According to Johnson (2019), gamified platforms like
Kahoot and Quizlet increase motivation among learners. Similarly, Smith and
Brown (2021) emphasize the importance of multimedia in enhancing listening
and comprehension skills. However, challenges such as digital access disparities
and lack of training for teachers have been highlighted by Davis (2020).

Methods

A mixed-methods approach was used for this study. Surveys and interviews

were conducted with 50 ESL teachers to gather qualitative and quantitative data
on their use of technological tools. Additionally, classroom observations were
carried out to assess the practical impact of these tools on student learning.

Many educational institutions, especially in Ontario, are recognizing the

value of incorporating technology into the classroom, particularly to support
students learning English as a second language (ESL). Research suggests that
introducing technology early in education can enhance students' learning
experiences. When students are introduced to technology, it can significantly
improve their ability to communicate and engage with the material. According to
the Ontario Ministry of Education and research by Briggs (1998), technology in
the classroom not only makes learning more interactive but also helps students
feel more confident in their abilities. This approach has been shown to make
learning more effective and enjoyable for students, particularly when they are
young and technology is used in ways that align with their learning needs.

Results

The findings revealed that:
1.

Interactive platforms

were the most commonly used tools, with

78% of teachers incorporating them into lessons.

2.

Virtual classrooms significantly increased student participation,

especially in rural areas.

3.

AI-powered tools like Grammarly improved students’ writing

accuracy by 60%.

4.

Teachers faced challenges related to technical issues and lack of

training, with 45% expressing the need for professional development programs.

The results underscore the transformative potential of technology in ESL

education. Interactive platforms and multimedia resources have proven
effective in engaging students and enhancing language skills. However, the
digital divide remains a critical challenge, requiring schools and policymakers to
prioritize infrastructure development. Moreover, regular training sessions for
educators are essential to ensure the effective use of these tools.

Pedagogical Implication

Two significant challenges arose during the implementation of this

technological innovation. The first challenge was that teachers struggled to
become comfortable using the technology in the classroom. Many found it
frustrating to remember the steps required to use all four technology tools
together and, as a result, abandoned their tech-integrated lessons at the last
minute. To address this, the author provided consistent support with
troubleshooting before, during, and after school, which motivated the teachers
to keep experimenting with the technology. Over time, many developed two to
three iPad skills that became essential to their daily teaching. The second
challenge was increasing teacher motivation to adopt the new technology. At
this school, many teachers were National Board certified and had been teaching
creative lessons without relying on technology. As a result, they were reluctant
to prioritize technology integration into their existing lesson plans. Some
teachers also expressed that they were unfamiliar with Apple products and
preferred using their own tablet computers. Fortunately, the Newline
Smartboards TVs in each classroom were compatible with other tablets,
allowing teachers to use their personal devices for the technology innovation.

Conclusion

Technological tools play a vital role in modern ESL teaching, offering

innovative ways to make learning effective and enjoyable. While challenges
exist, the benefits outweigh the drawbacks, making technology an indispensable
component of education. By addressing barriers and equipping teachers with
the necessary skills, the full potential of these tools can be realized.
