Аннотация

Silibum marianum Gaertn.L., commonly known as milk thistle, is a medicinal plant belonging to the Asteraceae family. This study explores its morphological characteristics, ecological adaptations, and pharmacological properties. The plant is widely distributed due to its adaptability to diverse environmental conditions. Its active compound, silymarin, exhibits significant hepatoprotective, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory effects, making it a valuable component in modern pharmacology. Furthermore, its potential applications in agriculture and industry highlight its importance beyond medicinal use. Despite concerns regarding its invasiveness, Silibum marianum contributes to biodiversity and offers numerous health and industrial benefits. Future research is necessary to expand our understanding of its pharmacological and ecological roles.

Abstract

. Silibum marianum Gaertn.L., commonly known as milk thistle, is

a medicinal plant belonging to the Asteraceae family. This study explores its

Introduction.

Silibum marianum Gaertn.L., commonly known as milk

thistle, is a flowering plant belonging to the Asteraceae family. This plant has
been widely studied for its medicinal properties, ecological significance, and
adaptability to different environmental conditions. In addition to its historical
use in traditional medicine, it plays an essential role in modern pharmacology.
This article aims to analyze the morphological, ecological, and pharmacological
characteristics of Silibum marianum while emphasizing its significance in
various fields.

Morphological Characteristics

First and foremost, Silibum marianum is

recognized for its distinctive physical appearance. The plant typically grows up

to 200 cm in height and possesses spiny, lobed leaves with white veins. These
white veins are believed to be the origin of its common name, milk thistle.
Moreover, the plant produces large, purple, thistle-like flowers, which bloom
from June to August. The seeds, known as achenes, are dark brown with a
pappus that facilitates wind dispersal. Furthermore, the robust root system
allows it to thrive in various soil conditions, thereby contributing to its
widespread distribution. Additionally, the plant's rapid growth rate and ability
to form dense clusters allow it to outcompete other vegetation in some
environments. Its stems are thick and hollow, aiding in water storage and
supporting its survival in arid regions. The flowers attract a variety of
pollinators, including bees and butterflies, which enhance its reproductive
success. The plant’s ability to regenerate quickly after cutting also contributes
to its resilience.

Ecological Adaptation and Distribution

In addition to its unique

morphology, Silibum marianum demonstrates remarkable adaptability to
different climates. Originally native to the Mediterranean region, it has now
spread to various parts of Europe, Asia, and North America. Its ability to grow in
nutrient-poor soils, along with its tolerance to drought, makes it an invasive
species in some areas. Consequently, the plant has been classified as a weed in
certain regions due to its competitive nature against native flora. However,
despite its invasiveness, Silibum marianum provides a valuable nectar source for
pollinators, thereby contributing to ecological biodiversity. Moreover, this plant
has been found in disturbed habitats, roadsides, and agricultural lands, where it
thrives despite harsh conditions. Its deep taproot allows it to extract nutrients
from deeper soil layers, giving it an advantage over other plant species. While its
ability to spread rapidly can be problematic, it has also been used for erosion
control and soil restoration in degraded environments [2, 198-203].

Pharmacological Properties and Medicinal Uses

Notably, Silibum

marianum is well-known for its hepatoprotective properties, primarily
attributed to the active compound silymarin. Silymarin, a complex of
flavonolignans, exhibits antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and hepatoregenerative
effects. As a result, it has been widely used for the treatment of liver disorders,
including cirrhosis, hepatitis, and fatty liver disease. Additionally, clinical studies
suggest that silymarin may offer protective benefits against oxidative stress,
thereby playing a role in managing diabetes and cardiovascular diseases.
Moreover, recent research explores its potential anticancer properties, although
further studies are necessary to establish definitive conclusions. Furthermore,

studies indicate that Silibum marianum may have neuroprotective effects,
potentially aiding in the treatment of neurodegenerative disorders such as
Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease. Its anti-inflammatory properties may also
contribute to improved immune function and help in reducing symptoms of
chronic inflammatory diseases. In traditional medicine, the plant has been used
to treat digestive disorders, stimulate lactation in nursing mothers, and support
kidney function [4, 20-23].

Agricultural and Industrial Applications

Besides its medicinal benefits,

Silibum marianum is utilized in agriculture and industry. The seeds contain high
levels of oil, making them valuable for biofuel production. Furthermore, the
plant’s ability to accumulate heavy metals has been investigated for its
phytoremediation potential. As a result, it could serve as a sustainable solution
for soil detoxification in polluted areas. Additionally, milk thistle extract is
incorporated into dietary supplements and cosmetic products, further
expanding its commercial applications. In agriculture, Silibum marianum is
sometimes used as fodder for livestock due to its nutritional properties.
However, care must be taken as high doses may have toxic effects on some
animals. Moreover, the plant’s potential role in sustainable agriculture is being
explored, particularly in organic farming systems where it may serve as a
natural pest repellent and soil enhancer.

Conclusion.

In summary, Silibum marianum Gaertn.L. is a plant of great

scientific and practical significance. Its distinct morphological features,
ecological adaptability, and medicinal properties make it a subject of continuous
research. Despite concerns regarding its invasiveness, the plant offers numerous
benefits, ranging from liver protection to potential industrial applications. Its
role in phytoremediation, biofuel production, and sustainable agriculture
further highlights its importance. Therefore, ongoing studies on its
pharmacological effects and ecological impact will further enhance our
understanding of this remarkable species, ensuring its optimal use in medicine,
industry, and environmental management.
