THE ROLE OF DEEP STRUCTURE AND SURFACE STRUCTURE IN
TRANSFORMATIONAL GRAMMAR

Abstract.
Transformational grammar, a theory developed by Noam
Chomsky, plays a crucial role in understanding language structure and sentence
formation. A fundamental aspect of this theory is the distinction between deep
structure and surface structure, which represent different levels of syntactic
organization. This article explores their significance, interrelation, and impact on
linguistic analysis. Moreover, it highlights their role in sentence generation,
ambiguity resolution, and language acquisition, providing insights into how
transformational grammar explains the complexity of human language.

Introduction.
Language is a complex system governed by rules that allow
infinite sentence generation. Transformational grammar, introduced by
Chomsky in the 1950s, provides a framework for understanding how sentences
are formed and interpreted. At the core of this theory lie two essential concepts:
deep structure and surface structure [2, 48-87]. While deep structure represents
the abstract syntactic organization of a sentence, surface structure refers to its
final syntactic form after transformations. In order to fully grasp the importance
of these structures, it is essential to examine their role in syntax, meaning, and
linguistic transformations.
Deep structure, also known as underlying structure, serves as the
fundamental representation of a sentence's meaning. It is an abstract syntactic
configuration generated by phrase structure rules before any transformations
occur. Essentially, deep structure determines the logical relations among
sentence components and ensures that syntactic elements align with semantic
interpretation. For instance, the sentence "John saw Mary" and its passive
counterpart "Mary was seen by John" share the same deep structure because
both convey the same meaning.
Furthermore, deep structure is crucial for capturing grammatical relations
such as subject-object relationships, which remain constant despite
transformations. It also plays a significant role in linguistic universals, as it
reflects the innate structures common to all languages. By identifying these

structures, researchers gain a better understanding of how humans process and
generate language, reinforcing Chomsky’s theory of an innate linguistic faculty.
In contrast to deep structure, surface structure refers to the final syntactic
arrangement of a sentence after undergoing transformational rules. It
represents how a sentence appears in speech or writing, incorporating various
modifications such as movement, deletion, and insertion. For example, in the
transformation of "John saw Mary" into "Mary was seen by John," the passive
construction alters the word order while maintaining the original meaning
derived from the deep structure.
Surface structure is vital in understanding how sentences are interpreted in
different contexts. It accounts for syntactic variations and allows for stylistic
modifications that contribute to effective communication. Moreover, it plays a
crucial role in ambiguity resolution. For example, the sentence "Flying planes
can be dangerous" has a single surface structure but may derive from different
deep structures, leading to multiple interpretations. Such cases highlight the
importance of considering both deep and surface structures in linguistic
analysis.
Deep and surface structures are interconnected through transformational
rules, which modify the underlying structure to produce a grammatically
acceptable surface form. These transformations include operations such as:
Movement
: Changing the position of elements (e.g., question
formation: "You are coming" → "Are you coming?").
Deletion
: Omitting certain elements (e.g., "She is going to the store,
and he is too" → "She is going to the store, and he too").
Insertion
: Adding elements for clarity (e.g., "He gave the book to
her" → "He gave her the book") [4, 76].
Through these transformations, deep structures are reshaped into surface
structures while preserving meaning. This process not only explains how
different sentence structures convey the same underlying message but also
accounts for language variations across dialects and languages.
Understanding the distinction between deep and surface structure has
significant implications for language acquisition and linguistic research. Firstly,
it supports the idea that humans possess an innate capacity for language
learning, as deep structures reflect universal grammatical patterns. Children,
regardless of their native language, acquire language through internalizing these
structures and applying transformational rules.

Additionally, deep and surface structures provide insights into syntactic
theory and computational linguistics. Researchers use these concepts to develop
models for machine translation and natural language processing, enabling
computers to interpret and generate human language more effectively.
Furthermore, in psycholinguistics, the analysis of deep and surface structures
helps explain sentence comprehension and processing difficulties, particularly in
individuals with language impairments.
Conclusion.
In conclusion, deep structure and surface structure play a
pivotal role in transformational grammar, shaping our understanding of
sentence formation and syntactic organization. Deep structure captures the
fundamental meaning of sentences, while surface structure reflects their final
syntactic form after transformation. Their interconnection through
transformational rules not only accounts for linguistic variations but also
enhances our comprehension of language acquisition and processing. By
exploring these structures, linguists and researchers continue to unravel the
complexities of human language, ultimately contributing to advancements in
both theoretical and applied linguistics.
