This article discusses the crucial role of modern dictionaries in social
development and their importance in shaping the thinking of the younger
generation. It emphasizes the need to create educational, philological, and
encyclopedic dictionaries in accordance with modern demands. The article also
highlights the necessity of developing electronic corpus-based dictionaries and
adopting the achievements of global lexicography to improve Uzbek
lexicography.

The role of dictionaries in elevating societal thinking is immense—a fact
fully validated by global experience. A person's ability to think independently,
express thoughts clearly and fluently, and develop creative thinking usually
begins in childhood. Therefore, specialized dictionaries intended for young and
middle-aged learners are of great importance.
Since independence, lexicography has somewhat revived; significant work
has been done in re-publishing politically, spiritually, and socially outdated
dictionaries and partially updating them. As a result, our linguistic treasury of
dictionaries has grown. However, it would be premature to claim that we have
reached the level of developed countries. In English, French, Spanish, German,
and Russian linguistics, lexicography has reached a very high level, especially
the branch engaged in creating colorful, decorative educational dictionaries for
children of various ages is highly developed.
To date, many dictionaries have been created in the Uzbek language, and
their thematic and usage scopes are quite diverse. Nevertheless, in the literature,
dictionary classifications and descriptions are typically explained in the same
way. From the perspective of their object, they are categorized as philological
and encyclopedic; by scope, as general and specialized types. However, due to
the lack of clearly defined goals, objects, principles, and plans in dictionaries,
various shortcomings and inconsistencies often arise. This necessitates a deeper
study of dictionary classifications and descriptions, and the development of
principles and algorithms for compiling each type.

Thanks to independence, profound reforms have begun in every sphere of
society, and the field of lexicography within linguistics has also been tasked with
specific responsibilities. These include the following:
1.Enhancing the Role of Dictionaries in Shaping National Culture:
Newly created dictionaries and their glossaries should fully reflect national
traditions, customs, the culture and rituals of our people, and emdiv a national
spirit.
2.Developing Educational Lexicography:
Educational dictionaries should serve as second teachers, favorite hobbies,
and beloved literary works for today’s students. Instead of asking parents,
grandparents, or elders about unfamiliar information from textbooks, students
should study and learn independently using their colorful, engaging dictionary
collections. To support this, specialists need to create comprehensive,
explanatory, and high-quality educational dictionary sets that meet student
needs.
3.Creating Modern Philological Dictionaries:
Although many types of philological dictionaries have been produced, there is a
need to improve and update them in accordance with the spirit of the times.
4.Creating Encyclopedic Dictionaries:
There is a high demand for encyclopedic dictionaries across various fields today.
For example, in medicine, Uzbek national cuisine, and household items. Take
medicine as an example: today, people often attempt to treat themselves and
even administer injections to their children for minor ailments. Therefore, there
is a dire need for user-friendly, simple, yet modern and globally relevant health
and medical encyclopedias that integrate both Eastern and Western medical
achievements.
It should also be noted that the modern global book market is dominated by
such diverse contemporary dictionaries, colorful encyclopedias, and various
types of reference materials.
6.Studying Global Lexicographic Achievements and Applying Them to
Uzbek Lexicography:
As mentioned, Uzbek lexicography currently lags behind global standards.
To enhance its status, it is necessary to thoroughly study global linguistic
achievements and adopt exemplary models where appropriate.

7.Creating Electronic Corpus-Based Dictionaries:
Among electronic dictionaries, a new type has emerged that synthesizes the
work of linguists and enhances previously created dictionaries—this is known
as the electronic corpus-based dictionary (digital dictionary).
Additionally, it is worth mentioning that today, every intellectual should
have a personal electronic library on their computer. A personal electronic
library may consist of sections such as scientific literature, fiction, electronic
dictionaries, newspapers and magazines, articles, and mail services.
In general, there is a pressing need to reassess the issue of Uzbek
lexicography. Creating modern dictionaries is a requirement of the times and an
urgent task for linguists.
It is well known that dictionaries play an invaluable role in the
development, progress, and elevation of our society. The development level of a
particular field can often be gauged by its dictionaries, as dictionaries reflect the
achievements of that field. Therefore, improving the theoretical aspects of
dictionaries and developing principles for their compilation will always remain
relevan
