THE ROLE OF AUTHENTIC MATERIALS IN LANGUAGE LEARNING

Authentic materials play main role in our language learning process. Reading more
authentic materials than scientific ones is becoming more popular. That is to say, more
and more people interested in that kind of materials. The demand of reading life materials
is increasing day by day. The more you read them, the more you get involved in reading
them. They are not boring or a waste of time. Because by reading them, we gain a lot of
life experiences. Also, authentic materials provide people real-life examples of language
used in everyday situations. We can increase the knowledge we have, expand world view.
There are several types of authentic materials such as reading and listening. A
newspaper article, short stories, a novel, a radio interview are examples of authentic
reading materials. These are written for real-life, not written for pedagogic processes.
Authentic reading is the most interesting process in language learning. Since, by reading
them, we can speed up language learning course. We can find reading authentic materials
at study sites that is to say at University, college , school lessons or online locations.
Because reading authentic materials are given on coursebook at University or college.
For instance, we have that kind of materials, too.
At reading - writing lessons, we have read authentic stories, novels such as ‘Everyday
Use’ by Alice Walker, ‘Two thanksgiving Day Gentleman’ by O. Henry. Also, reading
authentic materials are included with newspaper, magazine articles. For example, ‘Lost
in translation? The one inch truth about Netflix’s subtitle problem 1- part of three- part
journal ’, ‘ Air travel ’ , ‘ From a pandemic to plastic surgery : how Covid changed the
way we see our faces. We have read all of them. Therefore, we gained lots of knowledge,
experience that we can use in our life.
Moreover, they have a positive effect on learner motivation. Next step is authentic

listening materials. They are TV news, shows, podcasts, songs, online videos, and
movies, also.
When learning a language , of course , it is important to watch movies in that
language with subtitles, listen to music , news in that language , different podcasts every
day . Certainly, practicing plays main role in language learning. Because, if the same
activity is repeated every day, it will start to become a habit, which means that you want
to learn English perfectly, for which of course it is important to do above. By listening to
only English music, we can learn the phrases used in speaking and increase our speaking
speed.
It should be noted that by watching subtitled movies, listening to music, podcasts,
news, you can also learn rules of pronunciation. When you read any text, you need these
rules, of course. When you watch a movie, watching the Uzbek version first, and then the
English version with or without subtitles, has a great impact on language learning and
plays an important role.
In my points of view, the role authentic materials in language learning is great.
Because, as it is stated up, learners can speed up language learning process, gain a lot of
experience, knowledge . By gaining them, they can use in their life time and they know
how and what to talk with people. The most important sight of these materials is
motivation. Yes, motivation, you did not hear wrong. Because , in authentic material real-
life situations are described and as a result, the learner who reads it draws the necessary
conclusions and gets enough motivation to change his life for the better . Thus, motivation
is an action that motivates a person to act.
