Grammar is one of the important aspects of the language requiring different approaches and
methods. There is a difference between grammar for native speakers and grammar for language
learners. Native speakers usually think of English grammar as a subject studied in school. The
National Programme for Specialist Training and Education puts before the English teachers a lot of
actual problems: what methods and techniques are effective and give good results, what methods help
to teach and learn all language skills [1].
The word
Grammar
means different points to different people. To the ordinary citizen, it
connotes to correctness or incorrectness of the language that he or she speaks. To a school student, it
means an analytical and terminological study of sentences. Grammar for sportsmen can include
understanding and correctly using language related to game rules and regulations, techniques and
strategies, communication with teammates and coaches, interviews and press conferences and writing
sports-related content such as match reports or social media posts. In addition, one of the important
understands of contracts and agreements in the sports industry. Knowledge of grammar helps the
student in the correction of mistakes and improvement of written work. A person cannot learn a
foreign language accurately only through a process of unconscious assimilation. Grammar is a sure
ground of reference when linguistic habits fail us. Therefore, grammar is indispensable for the
student. In this study, our aim is to bring the attention of the language teacher as well as the learner
about the real utility of grammar in teaching English language.
Nowadays communication has become the heart and soul of the human life. The process of
communication chiefly deals with speaking, listening, reading and writing. No one really learns
grammar andit has become more natural phenomenon that we start speaking what everydiv speaks
around us. We gradually develop a better sense of understanding with the passage of time. We do not
study grammar of our own mother tongue to use it for daily speaking, but when we need to polish,
our own mother tongue or we want to learn a foreign dialect, we have to study its grammar and we
usually do that. When we come to learn a new language like English, we need to study its grammar;
the importance of grammar cannot be ignored or neglected, and before we do that, we need to
understand what grammar is.
Grammar is the study of words and the ways of learning words work together; an invisible force
that guides us as we put words together into sentences. Any person who communicates using a
particular language, consciously or unconsciously becomes aware of the grammar of that language.
However, in this context we would like cite a wonderful example as described “A writer has given a
beautiful analogy to illustrate the use of knowledge of Grammar. Imagine two car drivers. The first
driver knows only driving and nothing about the working of the engine. He feels helpless whenever
there is some trouble with the machinery. The second driver knows driving and understands the
working of the machinery too. The person who knows grammar is like this second driver. In case he
doubtful about the correctness of a particular thing, his knowledge of grammar comes to his rescue
[2;116]”. Therefore, to speak in a clearer and more effective manner we have to study grammar. For
the person who has unconscious knowledge of grammar, it may be sufficient for simple language use.
Nevertheless, the persons who wish to communicate in the artistic manner with well-defined
structures must go for the greater depth of understanding and proficiency what the study of grammar
offers.
It is certainly worth studying about the genesis of Grammar. What else might be the true
definition of grammar? We are sure that a title might be misleading. We are not going to speak much
about good or bad grammar and our focus is on the chronological development and usage of grammar
by writers, scholars and teachers of English.
Let’s have a close study of the statements that clearly express different types and interpretations,
which is the focal point of our discussion. In this connection, let us consider some of the claims made

by one of the most outstanding Grammarians of English Language acclaimed widely stated below:
It is probably a correct saying that there are very few inflexions in English grammar. It has
grown up as an easy and simplified language.
We know that English speakers generally have freedom to devise new words or borrow word,
and even add new innovative constructions. Indeed, we have the strong notion that where a language
academy exists, there is usually a strong tradition for an insistent teaching of the rules. Thus, French
usually follow some strict rules of grammar. On the other hand, flexibility characterizes use of English
as per one’s full-fledged autonomy. Therefore, this is the difference that a speaker of English avails
himself of speaking English. It is comprehended from the above criticism that some grammars are
written for mature scholars; some are for the immature schoolchildren; some are for foreign
learners;some for native speakers; some have the aim of giving the history of every construction;
some are concerned with the contemporary language, too. All these are written with a purpose which
can bring results with positive value for the learners.

The teaching of English as a foreign language or as a second language exists in all parts of the
world. Since English has become an international language more importance is being laid on teaching
and learning it effectively. Materials are designed to provide appropriate exposure to the learners and
enrich the language learning experience. Exposure to natural language plays a vital part in the
language acquisition process. Authentic materials that are derived from the culture of the target
language give positive attitude towards language learning rather than those specially designed for
language learning. However, in most of the classes students are taught using traditional materials and
audio materials that do not prepare them to encounter real life situations. Authentic materials act as a
vehicle in bringing the target culture nearer to them. It is worthwhile to know what authentic materials
are. Using examples of language that are produced by native speakers for their own purposes and
newspaper articles, advertisements, pop songs, strip cartoons are considered to be the authentic
materials.
Authentic materials are print, video, and audio materials students encounter in their daily lives,
such as change-off address forms, job applications, menus, voice mail messages, radio programs, and
videos. Authentic materials are not created specifically to be used in the classroom, but they make
excellent learning tools for students precisely because they are authentic. Authentic materials are
sometimes called contextualized materials which we come across in daily life. Many scholars have
defined the term authentic materials in different ways but every definition has one common
characteristic that authentic materials have exposure to real language and its usage in its own
community. Most of scholar announced their points about authentic materials, such as Jordan, Nunan,
Herrington and Oliver, Harmer, Bacone&Finneman, Miller, Otte, Thanajaro, Berardo, Kim, Clark,
Kilickaya, Martinez, Norton & Sprague, Mcknight and others. Above mentioned names of
researchers defined the term authentic materials and divided several kinds of types or categorized.
Besides, scholars argue that the use of authentic materials help students to bridge the gap between
classroom knowledge and their capacity to participate in real-world events.
The use of authentic materials for English language teaching is a topic which has been discussed
for many years by experts in the field and teaching professionals. Most teachers have their own
