Pop art is an integral part of modern music culture, and successful creation and achievement of

high skills in this area requires a wide range of musical knowledge, musical thinking and

creative abilities. The pop singer should not only know the technique of working with sound,

but also have the skills to work with musical instruments, including piano, independently study

musical compositions, analyze musical works and develop a creative approach. A special place

in the formation of such skills is occupied by the science of general piano. This science

provides the main foundation of musical knowledge for students studying pop singing and

offers a wide range of opportunities for creative development. Piano is an important tool that

helps the singer to expand her creative skills, develop her musical thinking and her creative

search. This article highlights the importance of teaching piano to pop singer students in the

educational process, its positive impact on the development of creative abilities, professional

training and the formation of musical thinking through a scientific approach.
The piano is recognized as a universal instrument in musical education. This is a solid creative

foundation for students in the field of variety singing, as the technical capabilities of the

instrument and the sound spectrum are wide. Piano lessons will help to form a wide range of

knowledge and skills for students of the variety singing direction. Teaching piano to pop

singing students is an important tool for developing their musical thinking, improving their

performance skills and expanding their creative abilities. Through piano, students will have the

opportunity to master the literacy of notes, form a sense of rhythm, understand harmony and

develop performance skills. Below we will delve deeper into the importance and useful aspects

of the knowledge and skills that the pop singer receives by studying piano science.

Development of musical thinking.

The process of studying piano plays an important role in

deepening the musical thinking of pop singer students. Musical thinking is the ability to

understand the structure of music, to understand and consciously interpret its internal laws.

Through piano, the student learns to analyze the structure, rhythmic and melodic elements of

each work. The singer needs to deeply understand the work he is performing and feel its

structural features. For example, musical forms – periods, phrases, cadences, modulations –

are also important in pop music. Piano training helps singers to understand these elements and

form the skills to perform in accordance with them. In addition, through piano, students learn

various rhythmic schemes that serve to improve the quality of their vocal performance.

Rhythmic clear performance is important for a variety singer and is of great importance when

working with a live ensemble on stage or in the process of recording sound in the studio. For

this reason, piano learning serves as a means of developing musical thinking and expands the

possibilities of musical expression of a pop performer.

Mastering note literacy and understanding musical texts.

The musical literacy of pop

singer students occupies an important place in the formation of their overall performing culture.

In the process of studying the piano, students master the work with notes, the correct

understanding of the order of their writing, the signs of height and duration. Pop music can be

improvisational in most cases, but still any professional singer should have the ability to read

music from notes. A good understanding of notes increases the chances of a pop singer to work

independently with any musical material. Through the study of piano, students learn to

understand various tonalities, basic and additional chords, melodic structures, and musical

forms. This plays an important role in enriching and expanding their repertoire. Variety

Performance in particular often requires different styles, so the ability to read and understand

musical text from notes helps to increase the professional level of the singer.

The formation of a sense of rhythm pop music is characterized by complex rhythmic

structures

. Unconventional rhythms and syncopations used in genres such as jazz, pop, rock,

funk are central to the pop performance. In the process of teaching piano, students master not

only simple rhythmic patterns, but also complex polyrhythmic structures. The clarity of the

sense of rhythm gives the pop singer the opportunity to confidently perform on stage.

Sometimes pop performers work with a live ensemble, and sometimes they work with an

orchestra or digital instruments. In any conditions, the rhythmic stability of the singer is

important. Piano training is of great practical importance to students in this regard and serves

to increase their rhythmic sensitivity. Also, through piano, students learn to work with

different rhythmic scales. This allows them to understand and play not only typical 4/4 or 3/4

scale songs, but also complex, variable scale music. As a result, pop singers develop the ability

to feel the various rhythmic characteristics of music and adapt their performance in accordance

with them.

Study and practice harmony.

Harmony is one of the most basic principles of music, which is

also considered extremely important for pop singers. In pop music, basic and complex chord

progressions, modulations and various harmonic variations are widely used. By studying piano,

students will have the opportunity to understand these musical phenomena and apply them in

practical performance. For example, in order for a pop singer to perfectly perform her vocal

party, she needs to understand well the harmonic basics of the song she is singing. If the singer

knows how to play chords on the piano, she will be able to independently prepare her parties,

transpose (change tonality), or, even, create an accompaniment that suits her. The piano also

helps the singer when working with an orchestra and ensemble. Many pop performers use

Harmonic knowledge to create arrangements of their songs. That is why piano studies for pop

singers are considered important, especially in terms of practical mastery of harmony.

Development of musical memory.

In the process of teaching piano, students will have the

opportunity to develop musical memory. Musical memory is important for Variety

Performance, and in order for the singer to perfectly perform the performance both on

stage and in the studio, her ability to remember must be high. Studying the different melody

and chord progressions through the piano helps students remember musical forms,

applying them successfully in later vocal performance. Music elements that repeat

regularly during exercises serve to strengthen memory. In addition, students who have

developed musical memory will quickly have the opportunity to study new works and add

them to their repertoire. This is an important skill for quick adaptation in pop art and

independent movement in the performance process.

Improve technical skills.

Piano studies significantly improve the technical skills of pop

singers. Basically, this is due to the development of their ability to work with rhythmic accuracy,

strength of hands, chords and melody. Variety singers perform live in most cases, and it is

necessary that they collaborate with various musical instruments on stage. A student with

advanced piano techniques has rhythmic stability and is able to better control his voice during

the live performance process. Also, technical skill develops in harmony with the vocals. For

example, performing various motion gamma and Etudes on the piano serves to expand the

singer's sound range and perform intonational precision.

Mastering the repertoire.

It is very important for pop singers to enrich and expand the

repertoire. Through piano training, students become familiar with pop music samples and

develop skills in performing and analyzing them. With the help of piano, students study songs

of different styles and genres in depth. For example, it is important to master their

accompaniment styles on the piano in order to understand the peculiarities of jazz, pop, soul

and rock. In addition, understanding the creative style of various composers helps pop singers

to form their own style of performance. Mastering the repertoire is not limited to memorizing

songs. Students develop skills in analyzing the structure of the work, choosing suitable

vocal interpretation methods for it and successfully performing on stage. Working on the

repertoire through the piano expands the singer's musical scope and serves her creative growth.

Develop performance skills.

Piano science is not only a tool for pop singers to study musical

theory, but also a tool for improving practical performance skills. Through the piano, the

singers master the skills of controlling their voices, maintaining a clear tempo and dynamics in

the performance process, correctly performing the phraseology. Also, pop performance often

requires live performances. Regular piano work increases the singer's confidence on stage.

Techniques learned through the piano can be used in stage performances, since through this

medium the singer is able to better control his own voice and musical expression styles. In

addition, the piano expands the singer's creative freedom. Many pop singers compose or arrange

their own songs. Having piano knowledge in this process will ease the creative process and

expand the possibilities of musical expression.

Formation of musical aesthetics.

Pop art requires not only technical excellence, but also

musical aesthetics. Through piano, students become aware of the unique aesthetic

characteristics of different genres and styles. The deep expressiveness of classical music, the

improvisational freedom of jazz, or the vibrant tone of pop music – all this is instrumental in

shaping the repertoire of the pop performer. Through piano, students will have the opportunity

to experience these aesthetic principles in practice. In addition, a performer who understands

musical aesthetics will be able to use deeper and more meaningful means of expression in his

stage performances. This helps to form a stronger bond with the audience.

Develop the ability to improvise.

In pop music, singers often have to improvise during

performance. For example, vocalizations, melisma, and other creative elements play an

important role in the jazz, soul, or R&B genres. Through the piano, singers who have

increased their creativity will have the opportunity to perform their songs in a new style,

experiment with different ideas and form their own musical voice. Improvisation plays an

important role in pop art. Through piano lessons, students learn to create freely in various

harmonic and melodic forms. In jazz and pop music performance, improvisation is a means of

creative expression. With piano, students learn to independently create chords, melodic

variations, and rhythmic variants, which increases their freedom on stage.

Develop the skills of working with the ensemble.

Piano teaching teaches pop singers to work

harmoniously with other musical instruments on stage. To work in the composition of any

ensemble requires musical sensitivity, rhythmic clear understanding and harmony. This serves

to make the singer act more confidently and clearly in a live performance. That is why piano art

is an indispensable teaching subject for pop singers. Pop music is characterized by its

multifaceted styles, so pop singers should always be open to new musical ideas. The piano

helps them a lot in this regard, as it is one of the most effective tools for gaining musical

experience understanding their voice more deeply and increasing the level of performance. For

pop singers, general piano education is important not only in theory, but also in practical terms.

General piano science is not only an assistant, but also a necessary lesson for students of the

variety singing direction. This science significantly contributes to the creative and professional

development of students. The piano is not only a musical instrument, but also a means of

shaping the singer as a full-fledged musical personality. This is important in improving the

quality of pop art and bringing it to a new level. Therefore, improving the program of teaching

general piano science and increasing the interest of students in this subject should be

considered as an urgent issue.
